Polystyrene-Supported Aluminum Chloride As An Efficient And Reusable Catalyst For Condensation Of Indole With Various Carbonyl Compounds, Bahman Tamami, Amir Nasrolahi Shirazi, Kaveh Parvanak Borujeni

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Crosslinked polystyrene-supported aluminum chloride (PS-AlCl3) is a stable, recyclable and environmental friendly heterogeneous catalyst for the condensation of indole with aldehydes and ketones to afford diindolylmethanes. In addition, PS-AlCl3 shows satisfactory selectivity in the reaction of mixtures of an aldehyde and a ketone with indole. Although AlCl3 is a water sensitive, corrosive and environmentally harmful compound, PS-AlCl3 is a stable and water-tolerant species. The mild reaction conditions, short reaction times, easy work-up, high to excellent yields, chemoselectivity, reuse of the catalyst for at least ten times without significant change in its catalytic activity, low cost, and easy preparation and handling …

Nanotechnology In Dental Sciences: Moving Towards A Finer Way Of Doing Dentistry, Vuk Uskoković, Luiz Eduardo Bertassoni

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Nanotechnologies are predicted to revolutionize: (a) the control over materials properties at ultrafine scales; and (b) the sensitivity of tools and devices applied in various scientific and technological fields. In this short review, we argue that dentistry will be no exception to this trend. Here, we present a dynamic view of dental tissues, an adoption of which may lead to finer, more effective and minimally invasive reparation approaches. By doing so, we aim at providing insights into some of the breakthroughs relevant to understanding the genesis of dental tissues at the nanostructural level or generating dental materials with nanoscale critical …

Transforming growth factor-beta (TGFβ) is a pleiotropic multifunctional cytokine that regulates several essential cellular processes in many parts of the body including the cornea. Three isoforms of TGFβ are known in mammals and the human cornea expresses all of them. TGFβ1 has been shown to play a central role in scar formation in adult corneas whereas TGFβ2 and TGFβ3 have been implicated to play a critical role in corneal development and scarless wound healing during embryogenesis. The biological effects of TGFβ in the cornea have been shown to follow SMAD dependent as well as SMAD-independent signaling pathways depending upon cellular …

Chemosensitization Of Cancer Cells By Sirna Using Targeted Nanogel Delivery, Erin B. Dickerson, William H. Blackburn, Michael H. Smith, Laura B. Kapa, L. Andrew Lyon, John F. Mcdonald

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Background: Chemoresistance is a major obstacle in cancer treatment. Targeted therapies that enhance cancer cell sensitivity to chemotherapeutic agents have the potential to increase drug efficacy while reducing toxic effects on untargeted cells. Targeted cancer therapy by RNA interference (RNAi) is a relatively new approach that can be used to reversibly silence genes in vivo by selectively targeting genes such as the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), which has been shown to increase the sensitivity of cancer cells to taxane chemotherapy. However, delivery represents the main hurdle for the broad development of RNAi therapeutics.

Methods: We report here …

Translating Research Into Intervention: Lessons Learned And New Directions, Marlene M. Moretti, Margaret Jackson, Ingrid Obsuth

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

The identification of etiological factors, risk profiles, and developmental trajectories that explain antisocial, aggressive, and violent behavior is essential to developing effective evidence-based programs that prevent and reduce such behavior in children and youth. What are the key findings from the Gender and Aggression research program that are relevant to the development and delivery of preventative and remedial interventions?

Almost invariably, justice-involved girls have been exposed to multiple forms of maltreatment and neglect. Not surprisingly, these experiences place them in a poor position to navigate the demands of adolescence and adulthood.

Girls involved in the justice system suffer from a …

Incarcerated Girls’ Physical Health: Can The Juvenile Justice System Help To Reduce Long-Term Health Costs?, Summer J. Robins, Candice L. Odgers, Michael A. Russell

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

Adolescent girls comprise nearly a third of juvenile arrests, and rates of incarceration among adolescent females have been rising rapidly. Yet, young women continue to be a neglected population in juvenile justice research and service delivery. While there has been an increased focus on addressing the unique mental health needs of girls in the juvenile justice system, very little attention has been paid to the medical and physical health challenges that these young women face. The failure to prioritize and understand the physical health needs of female juvenile offenders is important as the Department of Juvenile Justice has a moral …

Direct Observations Of Basin-Wide Acidification Of The North Pacific Ocean, Robert H. Byrne, Sabine Mecking, Richard A. Feely, Xuewu Liu

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Global ocean acidification is a prominent, inexorable change associated with rising levels of atmospheric CO2. Here we present the first basin-wide direct observations of recently declining pH, along with estimates of anthropogenic and non-anthropogenic contributions to that signal. Along 152°W in the North Pacific Ocean (22–56°N), pH changes between 1991 and 2006 were essentially zero below about 800 m depth. However, in the upper 500 m, significant pH changes, as large as −0.06, were observed. Anthropogenic and non-anthropogenic contributions over the upper 800 m are estimated to be of similar magnitude. In the surface mixed layer (depths to …

Exploring The Essence Of Student-Athlete Spirituality: A Phenomenological Investigation Of Ncaa Division I Athletes, Mark H. Raikes Jan 2010

Exploring The Essence Of Student-Athlete Spirituality: A Phenomenological Investigation Of Ncaa Division I Athletes, Mark H. Raikes

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to explore the essence of eight NCAA Division I student-athletes' experiences related to spirituality while participating in intercollegiate athletics. Discussions of NCAA Division I athletes often reveal ideas and misunderstandings of the student-athlete experience. There exists an increase in contemporary conversations about spirituality in higher education, and with that a need to better understand the student-athlete experience related to this complex construct. This study examined the experiences of student-athletes and how their spirituality, differentiated from religion, influenced how they utilized their athletic abilities. Through semi-structured, face-to-face in-depth interviews which were digitally recorded …

The assumption that different genetic elements can make separate contributions to the same quantitative trait was originally made in order to reconcile biometry and Mendelism and ever since has been used in population genetics, specifically for the trait of fitness. Here we show that sex is responsible for the existence of separate genetic effects on fitness and, more generally, for the existence of a hierarchy of genetic evolutionary modules. Using the tools developed in the process, we also demonstrate that in terms of their fitness effects, separation and fusion of genes are associated with the increase and decrease of the …

Figs, Wasps, Gophers, And Lice: A Computational Exploration Of Coevolution, Ran Libeskind-Hadas

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

This chapter explores the topic of coevolution: the genetic change in one species in response to the change in another. For example, in some cases, a parasite species might evolve to specialize with its host species. In other cases, the relationship between two species may be mutually beneficial and coevolution may serve to strengthen the benefits of that relationship.

Mir-107 Is Reduced In Alzheimer's Disease Brain Neocortex: Validation Study, Peter T. Nelson, Wang-Xia Wang

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Faculty Publications

MiR-107 is a microRNA (miRNA) that we reported previously to have decreased expression in the temporal cortical gray matter early in the progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here we study a new group of well-characterized human temporal cortex samples (N=19). MiR-107 expression was assessed, normalized to miR-124 and let-7a. Correlation was observed between decreased miR-107 expression and increased neuritic plaque counts (P< 0.05) and neurofibrillary tangle counts (P< 0.02) in adjacent brain tissue. Adjusted miR-107 and BACE1 mRNA levels tended to correlate negatively (trend with regression P< 0.07). In sum, miR-107 expression tends to be lower relative to other miRNAs as AD progresses.

Psychosocial Responses To Spinal Cord Injury As Predictors Of Pressure Sores, Hanoch Livneh, Samuel T. Gontkovsky, Dobrivoje S. Stokic, Erin Martz

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

Pressure sores are a preventable, but common, secondary complication of a spinal cord injury (SCI). Research is limited concerning the influence of psychological factors in the development of pressure sores. The purpose of our ex post facto study was to examine the role that emotional responses and coping strategies play in moderating the relationships between demographic and SCI-related medical variables and the frequency and severity of pressure sores. Ninety-five individuals, who sustained a sudden-onset SCI, completed a self-report questionnaire sent to the population of patients that received post-injury rehabilitation services at a rehabilitation center in the southern U.S. Multiple regression …

A Policy And Intervention For Overweight Children And Adolescents, Kimberly K. Mcclanahan, Marlene B. Huff, Hatim A. Omar

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

The global epidemic of childhood and adolescent overweight has become a major public health concern. Not only are these youth more likely to become obese adults, and thus more prone to obesity-related diseases than their non overweight peers, they are also likely to suffer emotional and social effects associated with overweight. Overweight in youth has been linked to depression, low self-esteem, eating disorders, negative body image, and stigma. It appears to be bi-directional in nature, with overweight sometimes predicting certain psychological effects and psychosocial issues sometimes predicting overweight. Effective assessment and treatment of psychological and mental health issues in overweight …

Testing Of Interactions Between Coal Ash Leachates And Rock Materials For Mine Backfill Evaluations, Colin R. Ward, David French, Leanne Stephenson, Ken Riley, Zhongsheng Li

Coal Combustion and Gasification Products Journal Archive

A series of laboratory-based leaching tests has been developed to evaluate the chemical interaction between ash, water and different mine-site rock materials, as a basis for assessing the potential environmental impact of using coal ash as backfill in coal mines. Two different test protocols were used: a two-stage serial batch testing program in which leachate from representative ash samples were allowed to interact separately with relevant rock materials under laboratory conditions, and a single-stage mixed batch testing program in which 50:50 mixtures of the same ashes and rock samples were extracted with water following a similar procedure to leaching tests …

Trips And Human Rights: The Case Of India, Subramanya Sirish Tamvada

Celebrating WCL Student Authors

The twenty-first century has seen a rapid growth of two regimes: the intellectual property rights regime and the human rights regime. On one hand, growth of multinational corporations has led to a stronger and stricter intellectual property rights regime. On the other hand, human rights have gained primacy in public as well as political debates. Developing countries have argued that intellectual property rights and Human Rights often come into conflict, particularly when implementing their international obligations under TRIPS. Nevertheless, developing countries are forced to provide better intellectual property protection. There is a need to give heed to the voices of …

The Proper Guardians Of Foster Children's Educational Interests, Margaret Ryznar, Chai Park Jan 2010

The Proper Guardians Of Foster Children's Educational Interests, Margaret Ryznar, Chai Park

Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

The United States Supreme Court has enumerated a constitutionally protected parental right to control the upbringing of one's child that includes the right to direct the child's education. The states, meanwhile, have differed in their interpretation and application of this principle when foster children's educational interests conflict with their biological parents' wishes. Specifically, although some states permit the judicial limitation of parental rights over children's education during foster care placement, others do not. This Article is among the first to consider the benefits and consequences of each approach in the context of parents' rights and children's best interests.
