Nuchal Cord Management And Nurse-Midwifery Practice, Judith S. Mercer, Rebecca L. Skovgaard, Joann Peareara-Eaves, Tracey A. Bowman Jan 2010

Nuchal Cord Management And Nurse-Midwifery Practice, Judith S. Mercer, Rebecca L. Skovgaard, Joann Peareara-Eaves, Tracey A. Bowman

College of Nursing Faculty Publications

Nuchal cord, or cord around the neck of an infant at birth, is a common finding that has implications for labor, management at birth, and subsequent neonatal status. A nuchal cord occurs in 20% to 30% of births. All obstetric providers need to learn management techniques to handle the birth of an infant with a nuchal cord. Management of a nuchal cord can vary from clamping the cord immediately after the birth of the head and before the shoulders to not clamping at all, depending on the provider's learned practices. Evidence for specific management techniques is lacking. Cutting the umbilical …

Measuring The Nanomechanics Of Nanoconfined Water Layers, Shah Haidar Khan Jan 2010

Measuring The Nanomechanics Of Nanoconfined Water Layers, Shah Haidar Khan

Wayne State University Dissertations

Nanoconfined water has been the subject of special interest due to its applications in various fields such as biology, geology, medicine, and engineering tribology. While there is a general agreement on the layering of water molecules along atomically smooth surfaces, the behavior and properties of nanoconfined water is still poorly understood. A significant controversy exists whether there is a phase transformation imposed by confinement. We have measured the stiffness and damping coefficient of nanoconfined water using a small amplitude (0.5-1 Å) atomic force microscope. The results were analyzed with the help of two viscoelastic models, the Kelvin model and the …

Meiotic Dna Re-Replication And The Recombination Checkpoint, Nicole Ann Najor Jan 2010

Meiotic Dna Re-Replication And The Recombination Checkpoint, Nicole Ann Najor

Wayne State University Dissertations

Progression through meiosis occurs through a strict sequence of events, so that one round of DNA replication precedes programmed recombination and two nuclear divisions. Cyclin dependent kinase 1 (Cdk1) is required for meiosis, and any disruption in its activity leads to meiotic defects. The Cdk1 inhibitor, Sic1, regulates the G1-S transition in the mitotic cell cycle and the analogous transition in meiosis. We have employed a form of Sic1, Sic1deltaPHA, that is mutated at multiple phosphorylation sites and resistant to degradation. Meiosis specific expression of Sic1deltaPHA disrupts Cdk1 activity and leads to significant accumulation of over replicated …

Single Molecule Studies Of Spliceosomal Snrnas U2-U6, Zhuojun Guo Jan 2010

Single Molecule Studies Of Spliceosomal Snrnas U2-U6, Zhuojun Guo

Wayne State University Dissertations

Spliceosomes catalyze the maturation of precursor mRNAs in organisms ranging

from yeast to humans. Their catalytic core comprises three small nuclear RNAs (U2, U5

and U6) involved in substrate positioning and catalysis. It has been postulated, but never

shown experimentally, that the U2-U6 complex adopts at least two conformations that

reflect different activation states. We have used single-molecule fluorescence to probe the

structural dynamics of a protein-free RNA complex modeling U2-U6 from yeast and

mutants of highly conserved regions of U2-U6. Our data show the presence of at least

three distinct conformations in equilibrium. The minimal folding pathway consists of …

Spirituality And Spiritual Self-Care: Expanding Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory, Mary Louise White Jan 2010

Spirituality And Spiritual Self-Care: Expanding Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory, Mary Louise White

Wayne State University Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to extend the theory of self-care deficit nursing by including specific constructs of religion, spirituality, and spiritual self-care practices within the structure suggested by Orem's self-care deficit nursing theory. Based on an extensive literature review, practice experience, and a discovery theory-building approach, a new mid-range theory called White's theory of spirituality and spiritual self-care (WTSSSC) was developed. To begin to test this mid-range theory, empirical indices of many of the main concepts were identified from prior studies and one new instrument (the Spiritual Self-Care Practice Scale) was developed. Hypothesized relationships among the main concepts …

Regulation Of Neuronal Excitability: New Mechanisms For Slow Afterhyperpolarization Activation And Modulation, Claudio Alberto Villalobos Jan 2010

Regulation Of Neuronal Excitability: New Mechanisms For Slow Afterhyperpolarization Activation And Modulation, Claudio Alberto Villalobos

Wayne State University Dissertations

One of the most characteristic features of pyramidal cells in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) is that they present a slow afterhyperpolarizing current (IsAHP) that plays a critical role in the regulation of neuronal excitability. This current is modulated by receptors acting via GΑq/11 G proteins, thus it is thought that neurotransmitters regulate neuronal excitability through the inhibition of this current. IsAHP is known to be mediated by calcium-activated potassium channels, however, neither the identity of the channel underlying this current nor its mechanism of activation are yet well understood. Recent reports have questioned a direct role …

As the most frequent congenital anomaly and the leading cause of death, congenital heart disease is an attractive target for tissue engineering research. The challenging target to engineer a native blood vessel stems from the need to find substitutes for pediatric patients born with congenital defects. The tissue engineering graft functions to bring various cells of the vasculature in close proximity to one another to enable intercellular signaling which facilitates cell adhesion, migration and differentiation. …

Trajectories Of Emotion Regulation Into Middle Childhood: An Investigation Of Attachment, Temperament, And Language, Julie Elizabeth Braciszewski Jan 2010

Trajectories Of Emotion Regulation Into Middle Childhood: An Investigation Of Attachment, Temperament, And Language, Julie Elizabeth Braciszewski

Wayne State University Dissertations

The development of emotion regulation continues to be considered a cornerstone to adaptive child development. However, studies have yet to integrate early relationship, child-centered factors, and socio-demographic factors, from infancy through middle childhood, in an attempt to look at emotional regulation development over time. By utilizing latent growth curve modeling, the current study aimed to extend understanding of how child-centered factors (temperament and language skill) and socio-demographic factors (gender, ethnicity, and family resources) affect the development of emotion regulation from 3rd to 6th grades, within the context of early attachment relationships. Stability in emotion regulation in the general sample, as …

ABSTRACT

MOLECULAR MECHANISMS OF PRESSURE-STIMULATED CANCER CELL SIGNALING

by

CHRISTINA DOWNEY

June 2010

Advisor: Dr. Marc Basson, MD, PhD

Major: Cancer Biology

Degree: Doctor of Philosophy

Increased extracellular pressure stimulates cancer cell adhesion by a mechanism that is dependent upon beta-1-integrin activation, an intact cytoskeleton, and FAK and Src activation. By a different mechanism, increased extracellular pressure modulates cancer cell proliferation in a manner that is regulated by protein kinase C, but not Src or an intact cytoskeleton. Previous studies from our laboratory have shown that paxillin is a necessary mediator in the pathway by which pressure stimulates adhesion; however, …

A Comparison Of Parental Self-Efficacy, Parenting Satisfaction, And Other Factors Between Single Mothers With And Without Children With Developmental Disabilities, Raymond Phillip Small

Wayne State University Dissertations

Depression and stress occur among single mothers and raising a child with a developmental disability can be a difficult burden. The purpose of this study was to determine if having a child with a developmental disability was a source of stress and depression among single mothers, and if this impinged on parental self-efficacy, parenting satisfaction, and social support. The moderating potential of having a child with a disability was examined on relationships between stress, depression, parental self-efficacy, parenting satisfaction, and social support. Understanding these relationships could be useful in the service delivery system to single mothers and families of children …

Metal Chalcogenide Nanocrystal Assembly: From Synthesis To Applications, Qinghong Yao Jan 2010

Metal Chalcogenide Nanocrystal Assembly: From Synthesis To Applications, Qinghong Yao

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation study is focused on (1) the application of an oxidation-induced sol-gel assembly method to formation of CdTe aerogels; (2) extension of existing aerogel compositions and properties by an alternative synthetic approach: cation-exchange reactions; and (3) probing the functionality of CdSe aerogels as optical sensors of Lewis base analytes.

Highly porous CdTe aerogels were successfully synthesized by sol-gel assembly of CdTe nanocrystals with thiolate or nonthiolate (phosphine oxide) ligated surfaces by treatment with tetranitromethane. Both phosphine oxide-capped and the thiolate-capped aerogels exhibit similar structure, morphology and porosimetry properties, suggesting that precursor ligation does not have a no major effect …

The Effect Of Word Sociality On Word Recognition, Sean Seaman Jan 2010

The Effect Of Word Sociality On Word Recognition, Sean Seaman

Wayne State University Dissertations

While research into the role of semantic structure in the recognition of written and spoken words has grown, it has not looked specifically at the role of conversational context on the recognition of isolated words. This study was a corpus-based and behavioral exploration of a new semantic variable - sociality - and used on-line behavioral testing to obtain new word recognition data using the visual and auditory lexical decision tasks. The results consistently demonstrated that sociality is one of the most robust predictors of lexical decision performance. Overall, it appears that the visual lexical decision task is quite sensitive to …

A Social Ecological Perspective On Diabetes Care: Supporting Adolescents And Caregivers, April Marie Idalski Carcone

Wayne State University Dissertations

The diabetes illness management regimen is complex and demanding, requiring daily motivation and self-control. Adolescents with diabetes face unique risks for which social support may be one protective factor. The importance of social support from family and friends is well documented in the literature. Support for the caregiver and support from the health care provider, conversely, are understudied. These four sources of social support, considered together, span the adolescent's micro-, meso-, and exosystems constituting a social ecological model of social support for diabetes. The primary aim of this study was to test this model. The hypotheses were that each source …

C-Reactive Protein, Homocysteine, And Cognitive Performance In Healthy Adults, Cheryl Dahle

Wayne State University Dissertations

Elevated blood levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and homocysteine (Hcy) have received a great deal of attention as biomarkers for the development of cardiovascular disease. Their utility in predicting cognitive function has also been assessed, though the findings are equivocal. The current study examined the relationship between elevated blood levels of CRP and Hcy and their effect on cognition across several cognitive domains. As baseline blood levels of CRP and Hcy and cognition are in part regulated by genetic factors, the impact of T carrier status for variants in the CRP -286 C>T>A and the MTHFR 677C>T …

Identification Of Neuroblastoma And Its Prognostic Markers Using Raman Spectroscopy, Rachel Kast Jan 2010

Identification Of Neuroblastoma And Its Prognostic Markers Using Raman Spectroscopy, Rachel Kast

Wayne State University Dissertations

Introduction: Neuroblastoma is the most common cancer of infancy. It is one of several peripheral nervous system tumors, including ganglioneuroma, peripheral nerve sheath tumor, and pheochromocytoma. It is commonly situated on the adrenal gland. It displays similar histology to other small round blue cell tumors, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, and Ewing sarcoma. One method of judging neuroblastoma aggressiveness uses tumor histology factors, including mitosis-karyorrhexis index, Schwannian stromal development, degree of differentiation, and patient age. Tumor aggressiveness can also be judged based on the amplification of certain genes, including MYCN. Raman spectroscopy is a physics-based method which identifies the biochemical …
