Career Decisions: Goodness-Of-Fit And Attrition Of Teachers In Alternative Schools, Deidre S. Coulter Jan 2010

Career Decisions: Goodness-Of-Fit And Attrition Of Teachers In Alternative Schools, Deidre S. Coulter

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Teachers are the most important element in the education system (Stronge, 2002). However, studies of teachers in certain sectors are lacking. The paucity of research on teachers who work in the alternative school environment was a driving force behind this study, which is a case study of the characteristics of alternative schools, perceptions of teacher training, attrition, and goodness-of-fit. Interviews with teachers, administrators, and support staff in an alternative school were used to investigate interactions between teachers and students and between colleagues. Classroom observations of the teachers were used to help explore the classroom climate. Emergent themes such as communication, …

Parametric Frailty Models For Clustered Data With Arbitrary Censoring: Application To Effect Of Male Circumcision On Hpv Clearance, Xiangrong Kong, Kellie Archer, Lawrence H. Moulton, Ronald H. Gray, Mei-Cheng Wang

Biostatistics Publications

Background

In epidemiological studies, subjects are often followed for a period during which study outcomes are measured at selected time points, such as by diagnostic testing performed on biological samples collected at each visit. Although test results may indicate the presence or absence of a disease or condition, they cannot provide information on when exactly it occurred. Such study designs generate arbitrarily censored time-to-event data, which can include left, interval and right censoring. Adding to this complexity, the data may be clustered such that observations within the same cluster are not independent, such as time to recovery of an infectious …

Graduate Research Papers

In The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century, Thomas Friedman analyzes globalization, primarily in the early 21st century (Friedman, 2005). Ifwe are to view our world as one that is or becoming flat, we as educators need to address that issue as we look to educational reform in the 2 I st century. This creative component is addressing the uses of various types of socially mediated computer applications in our schools to make sure that our students are prepared to enter the work field with the skills necessary to succeed. There are a plethora of applications …

Impact Of Revised And Potential Future Albedo Estimates On Ccsm3 Simulations Of Growing-Season Surface Temperature Fields For North America, Warren E. Heilman, David Y. Hollinger, Xiuping Li, Xindi Bian, Shiyuan Zhong Jan 2010

Impact Of Revised And Potential Future Albedo Estimates On Ccsm3 Simulations Of Growing-Season Surface Temperature Fields For North America, Warren E. Heilman, David Y. Hollinger, Xiuping Li, Xindi Bian, Shiyuan Zhong

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Recently published albedo research has resulted in improved growing-season albedo estimates for forest and grassland vegetation. The impact of these improved estimates on the ability of climate models to simulate growing-season surface temperature patterns is unknown. We have developed a set of current-climate surface temperature scenarios for North America using the Community Climate System Model – Version 3 (CCSM3). Simulation results suggest that modifications to the default CCSM3 radiative parameters that are consistent with more recent accurate measurements of albedo values for grasslands and needle-leaf deciduous trees (NDTs) can reduce the overall growing-season surface temperature bias over North America in …

An Investigation Of The Role Of Aquatic Plants In The Cycling Of Phosphorus And Nitrogen In Murphy's Bottom Lake, Armstrong County, Pa, Melanie Ann Mathews

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objectives established for the Murphy's Bottom Ecological Project are to obtain baseline biological inventories and establish a Master Plan for reclamation of the 100 acre site located in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. Reclamation plans include connecting the 20+ acre Lake, formed by sand and gravel removal, to the Allegheny River to form a backwater wetlands. This study produced a macrophyte species list, mapped the macrophyte community and determined water and plant phosphorus concentrations and water nitrogen concentrations. Replicable laboratory methods for the analysis of these nutrient concentrations were adapted from established molybdenum blue, Nitrate Electrode and HACH Cadmium Reduction Methods. …

Examining Validity Characteristics Of The Mmpi-2 Psy-5 Psychoticism Scale, Enrique G. Covarrubias

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to firmly establish the facet scales of the Personality Psychopathology Five (PSY-5) Psychoticism scale of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Second Edition (MMPI-2). Arnau, Handel, and Archer (2005) recently developed facet scales for the MMPI-2 PSY-5 scales using principal component analyses. The results of this study and the original published study were compared to determine if similar facet scales are found for the MMPI-2 PSY-5 Psychoticism scale. Participants were drawn from three different samples: the MMPI-2 normative sample, an inpatient sample from a mid-Atlantic region, and a college sample from a Midwestern university. Item-level principal …

Ground Arthropod Community Survey In Grassland, Shrubland, And Woodland At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1992-2004), David Lightfoot

Sevilleta LTER Program Data

This data set contains records for the numbers of selected groups of ground-dwelling arthropod species and individuals collected from pitfall traps at 4 sites on the Sevilleta NWR, including creotostebush shrubland, both black and blue grama grasslands, and a pinyon/juniper woodland. Data collections begin in May of 1989, and are represented by subsequent sample collections every 2 months. One site (Goat Draw/Cerro Montosa) was discontinued in 2001, and a new site (Blue Grama) was initiated . Only three sites, creosotebush, black grama, and blue grama were continued between 2001-2004.

Effect Of Long-Term Nitrogen Fertilization On Mycorrhizal Fungi Associated With A Dominant Grass In A Chihuahuan Desert Grassland At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (2005), Andrea Porras-Alfaro, Robert Sinsabaugh, Don Natvig

Sevilleta LTER Program Data

We studied the diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in a semiarid grassland and the effect of long-term nitrogen (N) fertilization on this fungal community. Root samples of Bouteloua gracilis were collected at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (New Mexico, USA) from control and N-amended plots that have been fertilized since 1995. Small subunit rDNA was amplified using AMF specific primers NS31 and AM1. The diversity of AMF was low in comparison with other ecosystems, only seven operational taxonomic units (OTU) were found in B. gracilis and all belong to the genus Glomus. The dominant OTU was closely related to …

Xperts And Novices: Differences In Their Use Of Mental Representation And Metacognition In Engineering Design, Raymond Anthony Dixon Jan 2010

Xperts And Novices: Differences In Their Use Of Mental Representation And Metacognition In Engineering Design, Raymond Anthony Dixon

Dissertations

Research shows that mental representation such as analogical reasoning is a fundamental cognitive tool for design problem solving (Daugherty & Mentzer, 2008; Hey, Lensey, Agogino, & Wood, 2008; Lewis, 2008). Not much is known, however, about the way students and professional engineers actively generate and change their mental representation when solving a engineering design problem. There are very few studies that show how different types of mental representations; such as metaphors, propositions, and analogies; interplay with higher order cognitive processes; such as planning, monitoring, and evaluation; as engineering designers navigate their problem and solution spaces. This empirical study investigated the …

Ants! A Bug's Life, Mardi Mileham

Linfield Magazine

On a hot fall afternoon Chad Tillberg and six students grab nets, notebooks, small containers and vials, and tramp up a steep hill in the Coast Range. Loung Ly '11 pounds a round cylinder into the ground every 50 meters along the trail. Carson Moscoso '11 follows, inserting an open vial into each hole, making sure that it is at ground level. When they return in a week, their traps will contain a sampling of the insects that thrive in that environment.
