Vascular Plants Of Adjacent Serpentine And Granite Outcrops On The Deer Isles, Maine, Usa, N Pope, T B. Harris, N Rajakaruna

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

We performed a comparative study of the vascular flora of a serpentine outcrop, Pine Hill, and that of a granite outcrop, Settlement Quarry, from Little Deer Isle and Deer Isle, respectively, Hancock County, Maine. We established four transects along a gradient from exposed to forested areas within each outcrop. Plants were recorded for presence and percent cover from circular plots along each transect. Soil and tissue samples were collected to examine soil-tissue elemental relations. One hundred thirty-two taxa were recorded from serpentine and 89 from granite. Fifty-seven taxa were shared by both sites. Species richness (α diversity) and diversity indices …

On The Accuracy Of Explicit Finite-Volume Schemes For Fluctuating Hydrodynamics, Aleksandar Donev, Eric Vanden-Eijnden, Alejandro Garcia, John B. Bell Jan 2010

On The Accuracy Of Explicit Finite-Volume Schemes For Fluctuating Hydrodynamics, Aleksandar Donev, Eric Vanden-Eijnden, Alejandro Garcia, John B. Bell

Faculty Publications

This paper describes the development and analysis of finite-volume methods for the Landau–Lifshitz Navier–Stokes (LLNS) equations and related stochastic partial differential equations in fluid dynamics. The LLNS equations incorporate thermal fluctuations into macroscopic hydrodynamics by the addition of white noise fluxes whose magnitudes are set by a fluctuation-dissipation relation. Originally derived for equilibrium fluctuations, the LLNS equations have also been shown to be accurate for nonequilibrium systems. Previous studies of numerical methods for the LLNS equations focused primarily on measuring variances and correlations computed at equilibrium and for selected nonequilibrium flows. In this paper, we introduce a more systematic approach …

Assembly's Final Report Jan 2010

Assembly's Final Report

CACTUS--Citizens' Assembly for Critical Thinking About the United States

Each CACTUS brings new excitement along with new challenges. CACTUS 2010 was exciting because it was larger than in past years, more freshmen enrolled than in previous years, and our topic “What should we do about the death penalty? Keep it? Change it? Abolish it?” was by far the most profound, with implications touching on topics such as social justice, safety, equality, religious and ethical arguments, the Bill of Rights, and federalism, to name just a few.

The Proteomic Response Of The Mussel Congeners Mytilus Gallaprovincialis And M. Trossulus To Acute Heat Stress: Implications For Thermal Tolerance Limits And Metabolic Costs Of Thermal Stress, Lars Tomanek, Marcus J. Zuzow Jan 2010

Zuzow

Biological Sciences

The Mediterranean blue mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, an invasive species in California, has displaced the more heat-sensitive native congener, Mytilus trossulus, from its former southern range, possibly due to climate change. By comparing the response of their proteomes to acute heat stress we sought to identify responses common to both species as well as differences that account for greater heat tolerance in the invasive. Mussels were acclimated to 13°C for four weeks and exposed to acute heat stress (24°C, 28°C and 32°C) for 1 h and returned to 13°C to recover for 24 h. Using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and …

Zooplankton Avoidance Of A Profiled Open-Path Fluorometer, Kelly J. Benoit-Bird, Mark A. Moline, Oscar M. Schofield, Ian C. Robbins, Chad M. Waluk Jan 2010

Zooplankton Avoidance Of A Profiled Open-Path Fluorometer, Kelly J. Benoit-Bird, Mark A. Moline, Oscar M. Schofield, Ian C. Robbins, Chad M. Waluk

Biological Sciences

Significant avoidance of acoustically detected zooplankton was observed in response to a profiling instrument package. Avoidance decreased acoustic scattering from zooplankton averaged over the entire profile by more than a factor of 2, while the maximum avoidance decreased zooplankton acoustic scattering by a factor of 15 over the depth of some discrete scattering layers. Experimental manipulation of the profiler and its instruments revealed that an open-path fluorometer was triggering the avoidance. Avoidance occurred at an average of 8 m below the profiler with a range between 2 and 13 m. Effect range was positively correlated with the average attenuation coefficient …

Second Nature And Animal Life, Stefano Di Brisco Jan 2010

Second Nature And Animal Life, Stefano Di Brisco

Between the Species

I am concerned in this paper with McDowell's account of human uniqueness in nature in terms of a fundamental difference between humans and animals. I try to show that the concept of that difference is relevant for a Wittgensteinian understanding of the place of rationality in nature. I then develop an internal criticism of McDowell's transcendental way of approaching this topic by using Diamond's insights about the importance of the details for a realistic philosophical account of human mindedness. My aim is to show that the difference between humans and animals is constitutive of our understanding of what it means …

Discourse First, Cages Second: A New Locus For Animal Liberation, Brianne Donaldson Jan 2010

Discourse First, Cages Second: A New Locus For Animal Liberation, Brianne Donaldson

Between the Species

The Animal that was named, categorized, and excluded from the human community by the Greeks has seeped into society at multiple points. This Animal now exists in a paradoxical limbo where she is both excluded from social standing and moral consideration while at the same time being included, utilized and discussed within all sectors of society from advertising to philosophy, neuroscience to the pet industry, religion to farming. Thus, animals have been caught up in multiple mechanisms of explanatory terminology, symbolic use, and physical captivity which all work together to create a Discourse of the Animal, which is employed both …

An Online System For Tracking Class Participation, Bruce Donald Rhodewalt Jan 2010

An Online System For Tracking Class Participation, Bruce Donald Rhodewalt

Theses Digitization Project

This project examines an online system for tracking class participation points. The system addresses two primary issues: how to quantify class participation and how to report class participation. This will serve all stakeholders: for students and parents, quantifying participation conveys a sense of objectivity (crucial if participation is to be fairly included in the grade) ; for teachers, the daily collection and collation of partcipation data ensures that the data is reliable, i.e., worthy of including in a student's grade.

Effects Of Chronic Paroxetine And Fluoxetine Treatment On Markers Of Suicidal Behavior In Adolescent Rats, Leslie Renee Horn Jan 2010

Effects Of Chronic Paroxetine And Fluoxetine Treatment On Markers Of Suicidal Behavior In Adolescent Rats, Leslie Renee Horn

Theses Digitization Project

Major depression is a common problem in adolescents. Unfortunately, one of the most effective antidepressants in adults, the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) paroxetine, is not clinically effective in pediatric populations. There are many variables that increase the risk of suicide including genetic, social, psychological, and biological factors, making the evaluation of the effect of SSRIs on suicidal behavior difficult to assess in human adolescents. The goal of the present investigation was to compare the effects of paroxetine and fluoxetine in adolescent rats on markers associated with depression and suicidal behavior in humans.
