Gait Variability Patterns Are Altered In Healthy Young Individuals During The Acute Reperfusion Phase Of Ischemia-Reperfusion, Sara A. Myers, Nikolaos Stergiou, Iraklis I. Pipinos, Jason M. Johanning

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Background. The role of ischemia reperfusion contributing to functional impairment in lower extremity peripheral arterial disease (PAD) patients has not previously been elucidated. The evaluation of gait variability patterns has proven useful in many pathologic populations. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to isolate and determine the specific effect of the acute reperfusion phase of ischemia-reperfusion on gait variability in young individuals with no vascular disease.

Materials and Methods. Thirty healthy young individuals walked on a treadmill during baseline and the acute reperfusion phase of ischemia-reperfusion conditions while lower extremity joint kinematics were captured. Stride to stride …

Relaxin Signaling Activates Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Gamma, Sudhir Singh, Robert G. Bennett Jan 2010

Relaxin Signaling Activates Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Gamma, Sudhir Singh, Robert G. Bennett

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Relaxin is a polypeptide hormone that triggers multiple signaling pathways through its receptor RXFP1 (relaxin family peptide receptor 1). Many of relaxin’s functions, including vascular and antifibrotic effects, are similar to those induced by activation of PPARγ. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that relaxin signaling through RXFP1 would activate PPARγ activity. In cells overexpressing RXFP1 (HEK-RXFP1), relaxin increased transcriptional activity through a PPAR response element (PPRE) in a concentrationdependent manner. In cells lacking RXFP1, relaxin had no effect. Relaxin increased both the baseline activity and the response to thePPARγ agonists rosiglitazone and 15d-PGJ2, but not to …

Lessons From The Financial Crisis, Maurice Stucke Jan 2010

Lessons From The Financial Crisis, Maurice Stucke

Scholarly Works

What lessons can we learn from the financial crisis concerning the issues of systemic risk, firms too big to fail, and the income inequality in the United States today?

In light of the public anger over the financial crisis and bailouts to firms deemed too big to fail, this Essay first addresses the issue of systemic risk posed by mergers generally and those in the financial services industries specifically. The federal government heard concerns in the 1990s about mega-mergers in the financial industry. The Department of Justice, for example, heard concerns that the Citibank-Travelers merger would create an institution too …

Distribution And Ecotypic Variation Of The Invasive Annual Barb Goatgrass (Aegiolops Triuncialis) On Serpentine Soil, Kelly G. Lyons, A M. Shapiro, M. W. Schwartz Jan 2010

Distribution And Ecotypic Variation Of The Invasive Annual Barb Goatgrass (Aegiolops Triuncialis) On Serpentine Soil, Kelly G. Lyons, A M. Shapiro, M. W. Schwartz

Biology Faculty Research

Successful colonization of newly introduced species is driven by a multitude of factors and is highly dependent on the species. It has long been hypothesized that preadaptation and postestablishment natural selection of introduced species can facilitate their invasion; however, to date, limited research has been dedicated to these theories. In addition, although the correlation between establishment of invasive species and disturbance has been noted and widely studied, the susceptibility of undisturbed habitats to invasion remains unclear. In California, serpentine habitats are severe edaphic environments that have been relatively free of anthropogenic disturbance and nonindigenous species invasions. In this study, we …

Biology Faculty Research

Background: Ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) emitted by muroid rodents, including laboratory mice and rats, are used as phenotypic markers in behavioral assays and biomedical research. Interpretation of these USVs depends on understanding the significance of USV production by rodents in the wild. However, there has never been a study of muroid rodent ultrasound function in the wild and comparisons of USVs produced by wild and laboratory rodents are lacking to date. Here, we report the first comparison of wild and captive rodent USVs recorded from the same species, Peromyscus californicus.

Methodology and Principal Findings: We used standard ultrasound recording techniques …

Nuclear Gene Phylogeography Using Phase: Dealing With Unresolved Genotypes, Lost Alleles, And Systematic Bias In Parameter Estimation, Ryan C. Garrick, Paul Sunnucks, Rodney J. Dyer Jan 2010

Nuclear Gene Phylogeography Using Phase: Dealing With Unresolved Genotypes, Lost Alleles, And Systematic Bias In Parameter Estimation, Ryan C. Garrick, Paul Sunnucks, Rodney J. Dyer

Biology Publications

Background

A widely-used approach for screening nuclear DNA markers is to obtain sequence data and use bioinformatic algorithms to estimate which two alleles are present in heterozygous individuals. It is common practice to omit unresolved genotypes from downstream analyses, but the implications of this have not been investigated. We evaluated the haplotype reconstruction method implemented by PHASE in the context of phylogeographic applications. Empirical sequence datasets from five non-coding nuclear loci with gametic phase ascribed by molecular approaches were coupled with simulated datasets to investigate three key issues: (1) haplotype reconstruction error rates and the nature of inference errors, (2) …

Assessment Of Selenium And Atrazine Exposure And Effects To Wildlife At The North Platte National Wildlife Refuge, Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Matthew S. Schwarz, Christina D. Lydick

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

This study evaluated selenium and atrazine exposure and effects to fish and wildlife at North Platte National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge) in Scotts Bluff County, Nebraska. Atrazine was detected in 2 of 54 water samples and at low concentrations that are not of concern. However, concentrations of selenium and strontium exceeded toxicity guidelines in water, sediment, invertebrates, whole-body fish and wood duck eggs. Concentrations of selenium in water at Refuge sites frequently exceeded a 2 μg/L total recoverable threshold for selenium bioaccumulation and were greatest at Stateline Island (9.7 μg/L) and Little Lake Alice (24 μg/L). In sediments, strontium concentrations were …

50 Cfr Part 17: Endangered And Threatened Wildlife And Plants; Determination For The Gunnison Sage-Grouse As A Threatened Or Endangered Species; Proposed Rule, Allan Pfister

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

We, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service), announce our 12–month finding on whether to list the Gunnison sage-grouse (Centrocercus minimus) as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (Act). After reviewing the best available scientific and commercial information, we find that the species is warranted for listing. Currently, however, listing the Gunnison sage-grouse is precluded by higher priority actions to amend the Lists of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants. Upon publication of this 12-month finding, we will add the Gunnison sage-grouse to our candidate species list. We will develop a proposed …

Adaptive Harvest Management: 2010 Hunting Season Jan 2010

Adaptive Harvest Management: 2010 Hunting Season

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The process of setting waterfowl hunting regulations is conducted annually in the United States (Blohm 1989). This process involves a number of meetings where the status of waterfowl is reviewed by the agencies responsible for setting hunting regulations. In addition, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) publishes proposed regulations in the Federal Register to allow public comment. This document is part of a series of reports intended to support development of harvest regulations for the 2010 hunting season. Specifically, this report is intended to provide waterfowl managers and the public with information about the use of adaptive harvest …

American Woodcock Population Status 2010, Thomas R. Cooper, Keri Parker

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Singing-ground Survey data for 2010 indicate that indices for singing American woodcock (Scolopax minor) males in the Eastern and Central Management Regions are not significantly different from 2009. There was no significant 10-year trend for woodcock heard in the Eastern Management Region during 2000-10. This marks the seventh consecutive year that the 10-year trend estimate was not significant in the Eastern Region. The 10-year trend in the Central Management Region showed a significant decline. Both regions have a long-term (1968-10) declining trend of -1.0 % per year. The 2009 recruitment index for the U.S. portion of the Eastern …

Band-Tailed Pigeon Population Status, 2010, Todd A. Sanders

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

This report summarizes information on the abundance and harvest of band-tailed pigeons (Patagioenas fasciata) in the western United States and British Columbia through 2009. The all-bird Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) provides and annual index to abundance of Interior and Pacific Coast band-tailed pigeons since 1966, while the MSS, implemented in 2004, was designed specifically to index abundance of Pacific Coast band-tailed pigeons. Harvest and hunter participation are estimated from the Migratory Bird Harvest Information Program. The BBS provided strong evidence that the abundance of Interior band-tailed pigeons decreased (4.0% per year, 95% credible interval = -8.3 to -0.8) …

White-Winged Dove Population Status, 2010, Michael J. Rabe, Todd A. Sanders

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

This report summarizes information on the abundance and harvest of white-winged doves (Zenaida asiatica) in Arizona. Since 1962, the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AGFD) has conducted a call-count survey to monitor relative abundance of white-winged dove populations. Based on this survey, the annual count of doves heard per route peaked at 52.3 birds in 1968 and then declined until about 2000, after which, the mean annual count has remained stable at 24.7 doves per route (2001–2010). In 2010, the mean annual count of doves heard per route was 23.6. Also, the AGFD monitored white-winged dove harvest during …

Sprague’S Pipit (Anthus Spragueii) Conservation Plan, Stephanie L. Jones Jan 2010

Sprague’S Pipit (Anthus Spragueii) Conservation Plan, Stephanie L. Jones

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Apparently widespread during early European settlement, Sprague’s Pipits breeding distribution has contracted sharply from its historical range. Sprague’s Pipits were recorded as abundant during early European exploration; currently, they are common only in remnant large grassland patches in the northern mixed-grass native prairie of North America. Much of the decline of Sprague’s Pipits occurred in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as the short- and mixed-grass prairies were converted to agriculture. Since ca. 1900, approximately 75% of native Canadian prairie and 80% of aspen parkland have been converted from native grassland; in the United States, approximately 60% of native …

Implications Of Skinner's Verbal Behavior For Studying Dementia, Jeffrey Buchanan, Daniel Houlihan, Peter J.N. Linnerooth Jan 2010

Implications Of Skinner's Verbal Behavior For Studying Dementia, Jeffrey Buchanan, Daniel Houlihan, Peter J.N. Linnerooth

Psychology Department Publications

Persons with dementia experience continual declines in a number of abilities. Language abilities are particularly hard hit and become increasingly impaired as the underlying disease progresses. These language impairments make verbal communication very challenging for family and professional caregivers. As a result, caregivers may inadvertently punish verbal behavior, thereby exacerbating the deterioration of verbal repertoires. Although the topography of language impairments associated with dementia have been well described, less empirical work has been conducted concerning how to minimize these impairments and their deleterious effects. In 1957 B.F. Skinner outlined his conceptualization of language and cognition in his book Verbal Behavior. …

Effect Of Unilateral Hearing Loss On The Speech-Evoked Auditory Brainstem Response In The Presence Of Noise, Kristin Elizabeth Musser Jan 2010

Effect Of Unilateral Hearing Loss On The Speech-Evoked Auditory Brainstem Response In The Presence Of Noise, Kristin Elizabeth Musser

Independent Studies and Capstones

Speech-evoked auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were acquired in quiet and in the presence of noise at two study sessions to investigate 1) test-retest variability and 2) subcortical representation of speech stimuli. Participants were adults with normal hearing in both ears who listened monaurally and adults with unilateral deafness. Results indicate consistency in responses across sessions and several differences between hearing groups for magnitudes of discrete components.
