Growth Mechanism Of Titanium Nitride Nanowires And Their Physical, Structural And Biological Properties, Mainul Kader Faruque

Theses

Nanowires have attracted wide-spread attention from researchers around the world due to their enormous potential for basic studies and applications in materials and biological science and engineering. In this work, titanium nitride nanowires have been grown on a magnesium oxide substrate using a pulsed laser deposition technique. The selection of titanium nitride as a material of interest has been made due to its stellar properties of high melting point, good diffusion barrier, high hardness, good electrical conductivity, and scattered reports in the literature about its biocompatibility. In this work, gold has been used as a catalyst. The most critical parameters …

The objective of the Endangered Species Act is to "recover" imperiled species and thus to render the Act's conservation tools unnecessary To achieve this goal, the drafters of the Act crafted a linear process that begins with an assessment of the threats facing the species and moves through the elimination of those threats to the recovery and delisting of the species. It has become increasingly apparent over the past decade that few species fit this model- most species face threats-altered habitats and competition with invasive species-that cannot be eliminated. These species are "conservation reliant" because they will require ongoing conservation …

HIV is transmitted through dyadic exchanges of individuals linked in transitory or permanent networks of varying sizes. A theoretical perspective that bridges key individual level elements with important network elements can be a complementary foundation for developing and implementing HIV interventions with outcomes that are more sustainable over time and have greater dissemination potential. Toward that end, we introduce a Network-Individual-Resource (NIR) model for HIV prevention that recognizes how exchanges of resources between individuals and their networks underlies and sustains HIV-risk behaviors. Individual behavior change for HIV prevention, then, may be dependent on increasing the supportiveness of that individual’s relevant …

Principal Component Analysis And Biochemical Characterization Of Protein And Starch Reveal Primary Targets For Improving Sorghum Grain, Joshua H. Wong, D. B. Marx, Jeff D. Wilson, Bob B. Buchanan, Peggy G. Lemaux, Jeffrey F. Pedersen

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Limited progress has been made on genetic improvement of the digestibility of sorghum grain because of variability among different varieties. In this study, we applied multiple techniques to assess digestibility of grain from 18 sorghum lines to identify major components responsible for variability. We also identified storage proteins and enzymes as potential targets for genetic modification to improve digestibility. Results from principal component analysis revealed that content of amylose and total starch, together with protein digestibility (PD), accounted for 94% of variation in digestibility. Control of amylose content is understood and manageable. Up-regulation of genes associated with starch accumulation is …

Climatic And Environmental Controls On The Occurrence And Distributions Of Long Chain Alkenones In Lakes Of The Interior United States, Jaime L. Toney, Yongsong Huang, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Paul A. Baker, Eric Grimm, Paul Nyren

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Long chain alkenones (LCA) are temperature-sensitive lipids with great potential for quantitative reconstruction of past continental climate. We conducted the first survey for alkenone biomarkers from 55 different lakes in the Northern Great Plains and Nebraska Sand Hills of the United States. Among those surveyed, we found 13 lakes that contain LCAs in the surface sediments. The highest concentrations of alkenones in sediments are found in cold (mean annual air temperature ~11 °C versus 17 °C in our warmest sites), brackish to mesosaline (salinity = 8.5–9.7 g/L), and alkaline (pH = 8.4–9.0) lakes with high concentrations of sodium and sulfate. …

Pretreatment And Fractionation Of Biomass For Biological Production Of Transportation Fuels And Value Added Chemicals, Samuel Asomaning Agyemang Jan 2010

Pretreatment And Fractionation Of Biomass For Biological Production Of Transportation Fuels And Value Added Chemicals, Samuel Asomaning Agyemang

Theses

Lignocellulosic biomass is an abundant renewable material from hardwood, softwood, grasses and agricultural residues for ethanol production. Pretreatment of lignocellulosic materials has been a main technical challenge to a cellulosic ethanol production process. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate four pretreatment methods and conduct comparative analyses among pretreatment methods, chemicals used and biomass species to determine the best process in terms of glucan to ethanol conversion efficiencies. The separation of hemicellulose fractions to be used as precursors for the production of high value chemicals after pretreatment of biomass samples is also investigated. Pretreatment methods including Accelerated Solvent Extraction …

Using The Public Trust Doctrine To Ensure The National Forests Protect The Public From Climate Change, John Meyer Jan 2010

Using The Public Trust Doctrine To Ensure The National Forests Protect The Public From Climate Change, John Meyer

UC Law Environmental Journal

Logging is one of the major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. Every unnecessary timber sale by the Forest Service contributes to our climate change crisis. While President Barack Obama has stated his intention to have science guide the decision-making process, he recently allocated half a billion dollars for logging projects under a statutory framework that lacks scientific grounding. After an introduction, the article will look at the Healthy Forests Restoration Act and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 - a framework that encourages the Forest Service to continue polluting our atmosphere. Part III will look at the historical …

Environmental Conditions Of Green Valley Lake, Jennifer Bellamy Jan 2010

Environmental Conditions Of Green Valley Lake, Jennifer Bellamy

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Green Valley Lake, western Indiana, has experienced periodic inputs of acid mine drainage (AMD) from the abandoned Green Valley Coal Mine. The lake serves as a state fishing area, and AMD inputs may affect the aquatic ecosystem and human health. The purpose of this research is to determine to what extent the sediments in Green Valley Lake are acting as sinks for metals and if they may impact water quality. Water and bottom sediment samples were taken throughout the lake to evaluate spatial variability of contamination and to determine how the metal concentrations compared to Post Archean Average Shale (PAAS) …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Predators can have remote effects on prey populations that are connected by migration (i.e. prey metapopulations) because predator-mediated changes in prey behavior and abundance effectively transmit the impact of predators into predator-free prey populations. Behavioral changes in prey that might give rise to remote effects are altered rates of migration or activity in the presence of predation risk (called non-consumptive effects, fear- or μ-driven effects, and risk effects). Changes in prey abundance that may result in remote effects arise from changes in prey density due to direct predation (i.e. consumptive effects, also called N-driven effects and predation effects). Remote effects …

Ecological Boundary Detection Using Bayesian Areal Wombling, Matthew C. Fitzpatrick, Evan L. Preisser, Adam Porter, Joseph Elkinton, Lance A. Waller, Bradley P. Carlin, Aaron M. Ellison

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The study of ecological boundaries and their dynamics is of fundamental importance to much of ecology, biogeography, and evolution. Over the past two decades, boundary analysis (of which wombling is a subfield) has received considerable research attention, resulting in multiple approaches for the quantification of ecological boundaries. Nonetheless, few methods have been developed that can simultaneously (1) analyze spatially homogenized data sets (i.e., areal data in the form of polygons rather than point‐reference data); (2) account for spatial structure in these data and uncertainty associated with them; and (3) objectively assign probabilities to boundaries once detected. Here we describe the …

Membrane Anchor R9ap Potentiates Gtpase-Accelerating Protein Activity Of Rgs11·Gβ5 Complex And Accelerates Inactivation Of The Mglur6-G0 Signaling, Ikuro Masuho, Jeremy Celver, Abraham Kovoor, Kirill A. Martemyanov

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The R7 subfamily of RGS proteins critically regulates neuronal G protein-signaling pathways that are essential for vision, nociception, motor coordination, and reward processing. A member of the R7 RGS family, RGS11, is a GTPase-accelerating protein specifically expressed in retinal ON-bipolar cells where it forms complexes with the atypical G protein β subunit, Gβ5, and transmembrane protein R9AP. Association with R9AP has been shown to be critical for the proteolytic stability of the complex in the retina. In this study we report that R9AP can in addition stimulate the GTPase-accelerating protein activity of the RGS11·Gβ5 complex at Gα …

Rational Quantitative Structure–Activity Relationship (Rqsar) Screen For Pxr And Car Isoform-Specific Nuclear Receptor Ligands, Ann M. Dring, Linnea E. Anderson, Saima Qamar, Matthew A. Stoner

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) and pregnane X receptor (PXR) are closely related orphan nuclear receptor proteins that share several ligands and target overlapping sets of genes involved in homeostasis and all phases of drug metabolism. CAR and PXR are involved in the development of certain diseases, including diabetes, metabolic syndrome and obesity. Ligand screens for these receptors so far have typically focused on steroid hormone analogs with pharmacophore-based approaches, only to find relatively few new hits. Multiple CAR isoforms have been detected in human liver, with the most abundant being the constitutively active reference, CAR1, and the ligand-dependent isoform CAR3. …

Recently, genetic association findings for nicotine dependence, smoking behavior, and smoking-related diseases converged to implicate the chromosome 15q25.1 region, which includes the CHRNA5-CHRNA3-CHRNB4 cholinergic nicotinic receptor subunit genes. In particular, association with the nonsynonymous CHRNA5 SNP rs16969968 and correlates has been replicated in several independent studies. Extensive genotyping of this region has suggested additional statistically distinct signals for nicotine dependence, tagged by rs578776 and rs588765. One goal of the Consortium for the Genetic Analysis of Smoking Phenotypes (CGASP) is to elucidate the associations among these markers and dichotomous smoking quantity (heavy versus light smoking), lung cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary …

A Systems Biology Approach To Invasive Behavior: Comparing Cancer Metastasis And Suburban Sprawl Development, John J. Ryan, Benjamin L. Dows, Michael V. Kirk, Xueming Chen, Jeffrey R. Eastman, Rodney J. Dyer, Lemont B. Kier

Biology Publications

Background

Despite constant progress, cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the United States. The ability of tumors to metastasize is central to this dilemma, as many studies demonstrate successful treatment correlating to diagnosis prior to cancer spread. Hence a better understanding of cancer invasiveness and metastasis could provide critical insight.

Presentation of the hypothesis

We hypothesize that a systems biology-based comparison of cancer invasiveness and suburban sprawl will reveal similarities that are instructive.

Testing the hypothesis

We compare the structure and behavior of invasive cancer to suburban sprawl development. While these two systems differ vastly in dimension, …
