Contaminant Screening Of Osprey Eggs In Casco Bay, Maine 2009 Field Season, Wing Goodale Jan 2010

Contaminant Screening Of Osprey Eggs In Casco Bay, Maine 2009 Field Season, Wing Goodale

Publications

Starting in May 2009, BioDiversity Research Institute (BRI) expanded upon the 2007 and 2008 broad-based contaminant study on Maine birds, measuring both historical and emerging chemicals. Out of the 23 species studied in the first two years, we determined that osprey (Pandion haliaetus) foraging in Casco Bay required additional study in 2009. We selected osprey because they act as bioidicators of the marine habitat. The compounds we analyzed in ten eggs from Casco Bay were mercury (results pending), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCs). The results in this report also include the …

Potential Applications Of Randomised Graph Sampling To Invasive Species Surveillance And Monitoring., Mark J. Ducey, Kathleen M. O'Brien Jan 2010

Potential Applications Of Randomised Graph Sampling To Invasive Species Surveillance And Monitoring., Mark J. Ducey, Kathleen M. O'Brien

Natural Resources & the Environment

Abstract

Many invasive plants and animals disperse preferentially through linear networks in the landscape, including road networks, riparian corridors, and power transmission lines. Unless the network of interest is small, or the budget for surveillance is large, it may be necessary to draw inferences from a sample rather than a complete census on the network. Desired features of a surveillance system to detect and quantify invasion include: (1) the ability to make unbiased statements about the spatial extent of invasion, the abundance of the invading organism, and the degree of impact; (2) the ability to quantify the uncertainty associated with …

Atherosclerosis And Antioxidants, Yehoshua Lewis Jan 2010

Atherosclerosis And Antioxidants, Yehoshua Lewis

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Cellular lipid oxidation is a known cause for the cascade leading to the formation of lipid laden foam cells, which can cause of atherosclerosis. While statins and antioxidants have recently come under question in the amelioration of atherosclerosis, Flavonoids have recently been touted as a powerful antioxidant and suppresser of atherosclerosis. This paper will attempt to show why statins and vitamin E have come under scrutiny, and how the desired effects of Flavonoids can be attributed to the role it plays in increased paraoxonase-1 activity (a known anti inflammatory associated with HDL), decreased C- Reactive protein activity, and increased nitric …

Cardiac Regeneration, Sara Leah Abraham

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The following is an excerpt from the introduction to this article: Cardiovascular disease is a generic term that refers to any illness or disorder that involves the heart and its vessels or the blood vessels of the body. Cardiovascular disease has been accepted as the leading cause of death worldwide. According to the Centers for Disease Control’s National Vital Statistics Reports, twenty six percent of deaths in 2006, 631,636 in total, were caused by diseases of the heart (Heron et al. 2009).

One of the most common of all cardiovascular diseases is Ischaemic Heart Disease. This coronary artery disease often …

Undergraduate Preparation And Dissertation Methodologies Of Accounting Phds Over The Past 40 Years, Marvin L. Bouillon, Sue Ravenscroft Jan 2010

Undergraduate Preparation And Dissertation Methodologies Of Accounting Phds Over The Past 40 Years, Marvin L. Bouillon, Sue Ravenscroft

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

There is a shortage of accounting faculty and this shortage is predicted to worsen in the future. The number of new PhDs in accounting has declined from approximately 200 per year in the late 1980' s and early 1990' s to just over I 00 per year in recent years. Currently, we expect approximately 400 to 500 new accounting faculty positions to open up annually over the next to five to ten years. We believe that there has been a narrowing of the number of PhD candidates coming from fields other than accounting and other business related fields. If this …

Discursive Struggles In Families Formed Through Visible Adoption: An Exploration Of Dialectical Unity, Meredith Marko Harrigan, Dawn O. Braithwaite Jan 2010

Discursive Struggles In Families Formed Through Visible Adoption: An Exploration Of Dialectical Unity, Meredith Marko Harrigan, Dawn O. Braithwaite

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Grounded in the interpretive paradigm and framed by relational dialectics theory, the present study addressed the question: What discourses interpenetrate to reflect dialectical unity as parents communicate about their child’s adoption? Interviews with 40 parents across 31 visibly adoptive families—families with an obvious lack of biological connection—highlighted four instances of dialectical unity resulting from the following discursive struggles: (a) pride and imperfection; (b) love, constraint, and sacrifice; (c) difference, pride, and enrichment; and (d) legitimacy, expansion, similarity, and difference. Each struggle contains seemingly disparate discourses that, in combination, contribute to how parents discursively make sense of adoption. Practical implications of …

The Effect Of Service- Learning On Interdisciplinary Learning And Curriculum Reinforcement, And Its Application To Public School Environments, Madeline Kovarik Jan 2010

The Effect Of Service- Learning On Interdisciplinary Learning And Curriculum Reinforcement, And Its Application To Public School Environments, Madeline Kovarik

Faculty Publications

This qualitative research project focused on the impact of service-learning experiences on an interdisciplinary college freshman course. The research included the impact on academic learning, the application of concepts into a public school educational environment, and the perceptions regarding the contribution to the school being served. Participants were college freshmen students who received pre and post surveys and participated in both verbal and written reflections. Analysis of the survey responses and reflection data indicated the service-learning experiences enhanced student learning. Analysis of data also indicated a disconnect between recognized community needs and college student involvement toward fulfilling the needs.

Help! I Want My Child To Succeed! : Understanding The Referral Process Of Special Education For Children Of Color In New York City Public And Charter Schools, Jacob A. Dixon Jan 2010

Help! I Want My Child To Succeed! : Understanding The Referral Process Of Special Education For Children Of Color In New York City Public And Charter Schools, Jacob A. Dixon

Graduate Student Independent Studies

It is imperative for families and schools to create effective partnerships in Special Education, specifically since the referral process serves arguably as the primary crucial step that determines the likelihood of a child's educational path. Sociocultural and sociopolitical factors have impeded the opportunity for linking fan1ilies and schools together for success, including, but not limited to the following: lack of understanding of today's family structure and their rights, social capital and cultural deficits, subjective and/or discriminatory evaluations and barrier of language understanding within Special Education. This thesis serves a two-fold purpose of offering extensive research on family involvement in education …

A Case Study: The Evaluation Of The Graduate Middle School Education Program At A Southeastern University, Abbigail Armstrong

Education Dissertations and Projects

This dissertation was designed to determine reasons graduate students do not complete requirements for a Master's in Middle Level Education degree at the southeastern university. Since the program's initial on-campus cohort (2000) the graduation rate has decreased from 80% to 62.96% with the fourth on-campus cohort (2005). The current cohort currently has five students enrolled which will yield a 29% graduation rate depending on student choice. Program faculty is concerned about the increasing difference between the number of applicants and number of those completing the program.

The researcher conducted a program evaluation, using Guba and Lincoln's four phases of responsive …

The Impact Of Inclusion On The Academic Achievement Of High School Special Education Students, Harold Smith Dawkins Jan 2010

The Impact Of Inclusion On The Academic Achievement Of High School Special Education Students, Harold Smith Dawkins

Education Dissertations and Projects

This dissertation examined the impact of inclusion on the academic achievement outcome of high school special education students as measured by English 1, biology, and algebra 1 as a function of gender, ethnicity, and years of inclusion. The study also examined the generalizations with confidence that could be made about the use of inclusion methodology in high schools within an urban North Carolina school district as measured by end-of-course test scale scores. Data from three traditional high schools within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District were used in this study. High school special education students lagged behind several other subgroups on end-of-course …

Glacial/Interglacial Export Production In The Subantarctic South Pacific, Jessica Adamic Jan 2010

Glacial/Interglacial Export Production In The Subantarctic South Pacific, Jessica Adamic

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Atmospheric CO 2 varied considerably in the past; however, the mechanisms that drive this variability are poorly understood. CO 2 is linked to marine primary productivity through the biological carbon pump (BCP), leading to hypotheses that past increases in BCP efficiency in areas such as the Southern Ocean may have contributed to glacial CO 2 drawdown (Sarmiento & Toggweiler, 1984). Productivity has varied considerably in the past, but the extent, timing, and impacts remain poorly understood. The Subantarctic South Pacific is an area of the ocean that is crucial to the understanding of both glacial climate and paleo-export productivity. Unfortunately, …

Biogeographical Analysis Of Picoplankton Populations Across The Patagonian Shelf Break During Austral Summer, Heather Anne Wright Jan 2010

Biogeographical Analysis Of Picoplankton Populations Across The Patagonian Shelf Break During Austral Summer, Heather Anne Wright

Student Scholarship

The distribution and abundance of marine picoplankton populations in the Patagonia Large Marine Ecosystem (PLME) were quantified from samples collected during the COPAS08 (Coccolithophores of the Patagonian Atlantic Shelf Cruise) that took place in Austral summer from December 2008 to January 2009. Twenty seven stations were sampled at 5 depths for picophytoplankton and heterotrophic bacterial abundance using flow cytometric analysis and DNA nucleic acid staining. Additional samples were taken from a carboy incubation experiment to quantify the effect of increased CO2 concentrations on the picoplankton community. Results showed that cyanobacteria dominated the picoplankton biomass throughout the PLME, particularly at lower …

Validation Of A Measure To Assess Alcohol- And Marijuana-Related Risks And Consequences Among Incarcerated Adolescents, L. A.R. Stein, Rebecca Lebeau, Mary Clair, Joseph S. Rossi, Rose Marie Martin, Charles Golembeske Jan 2010

Validation Of A Measure To Assess Alcohol- And Marijuana-Related Risks And Consequences Among Incarcerated Adolescents, L. A.R. Stein, Rebecca Lebeau, Mary Clair, Joseph S. Rossi, Rose Marie Martin, Charles Golembeske

Cancer Prevention Research Center Faculty Publications

Few measures exist to assess risky behaviors and consequences as they relate to substance use in juvenile delinquents. This study sought to validate such a measure on a racially and ethnically diverse sample (N = 175). Results indicate that alcohol-related risky behaviors and consequences comprise a single scale as do marijuana-related risky behaviors and consequences. Furthermore, results suggest that the retention of common items for both scales produces reliable and valid scales and maintains parsimony. Internal consistencies were more than adequate (0.72 – 0.83) and test-retest stabilities, even across several months were acceptable (0.52 - 0.50). The scales evidenced a …

Waterfowl Of North America: The Biology Of Waterfowl, Paul A. Johnsgard

Waterfowl of North America, Revised Edition (2010) by Paul A. Johnsgard

The term waterfowl, at least as it is applied in North America, is generally restricted to the ducks, geese, and swans of the bird family Anatidae. About 140 species of this group of swimming and diving birds have survived throughout the world to the present day, and four more have become extinct during historical times. Many more species have existed in the past; the fossil record of this family extends back roughly fifty million years to very early Cenozoic times, although very little is known of the actual appearance and structure of the earliest form of waterfowl. Presumably these ancestral …

“Interface” organizations are groups created to foster the use of science in environmental policy, management, and education. Here we compare interface organizations that differ in spatial scale, modes of operation, and intended audience to illustrate their diversity and importance in promoting the application of science to environmental issues. There has been exciting recent growth in the nature and extent of activities by interface organizations and in new methods for science communication and engagement. These developments can help scientists – who face personal and institutional challenges when attempting to convey the results of their research to various audiences – interact with …
