A Balancing Act: Helping Students Understand The Mole Relationship For Balancing Equations, Karl Goldsmith, Matt Jaschen Jan 2010

A Balancing Act: Helping Students Understand The Mole Relationship For Balancing Equations, Karl Goldsmith, Matt Jaschen

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Stoichiometry can be one of the more challenging topics to teach in high school chemistry. Students often struggle until they realize the ratio from the balanced chemical equation represents mole ratios rather than the mass of each component. The activity presented here provides students with an inquiry based experience with a chemical reaction. During the activity, students seek evidence as to what the coefficients in a balanced chemical equation mean. With teacher guidance, these activities help students (1) connect chemical equations to observations, (2) gain evidence that mass ratios are not useful, and (3) understand the relationship between moles and …

Keeping It Green: Using A Compost To Improve Student Learning, Spencer Mesick, Kayla Hendrix

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

This article discusses ways in which composting might be used to mentally engage students with science content. Incorporating a compost pile in the classroom provides ample connections to future science content (e.g., conditions necessary for the life of organisms in a well running aerobic compost, what decomposition means in a biological sense, aerobic vs. anaerobic decomposition, food webs, respiration, recycling of nutrients, landfill issues, etc.). Also, reflecting the complexities of effective science teaching, the article makes clear the crucial role of the teacher during the activity. The science content and activity addressed in this article are appropriate for 9th - …

Children's Perceptions Of An Environmental Leadership Program: Camp 2 Grow, Karla Henderson, Barry Garst, M. Deborah Bialeschki, David Santucci

Research in Outdoor Education

Nature-deficit disorder has been highlighted as a concern for today's children. Organized camps for children have traditionally been associated with nature-based opportunities. However, the role that camps have in developing an appreciation for the outdoors and environmental stewardship has not been documented. The purpose of this study was to evaluate youths' perceived connections to nature resulting from a pilot test of a leadership and environmental stewardship program (i.e., Camp 2 Grow) undertaken at organized resident camps during the summer of 2009. Qualitative analyses of personal reflection journals were used. Campers recognized through this program that having the freedom to enjoy …

Kinetic Analysis Of Prodrug Activation And Atp/Utp Substrate Preference Of Nine Human Deoxycytidine Kinase Mutants, Breanna Wentz, Jaclyn Einspahr, Michael H. Godsey

CUP Undergraduate Research

Deoxynucleoside analogues are prodrugs that canfunction as inhibitors of both viral and cellular DNA replication processes. They are important in anti-cancer therapy because they hinder DNA synthesis and cellular mitosis. Within the cell, deoxyribonucleotides are synthesized using the salvage pathways by converting the unphosphorylated nucleosides to their mono, di- and tri-phosphate forms using a phosphoryl donor: ATP or UTP. Human deoxycytidine kinase (dCK) is the first and rate-limiting enzyme in this process. The dCK protein uses nucleotide triphosphates to phosphorylate several clinically important nucleoside analogue prodrugs in addition to its natural substrates. The preferred physiological phosphoryl donor for dCK is …

Real Artificial: Tissue-Cultured Meat, Genetically Modified Farm Animals, And Fictions, Susan Mchugh Jan 2010

Real Artificial: Tissue-Cultured Meat, Genetically Modified Farm Animals, And Fictions, Susan Mchugh

English Faculty Publications

Although touted by promoters as the cutting edge of food science, meat produced in vitro (rather than from a whole animal) is emerging more directly from developments in fine art—more specifically, from the aesthetic experiments of Australian-based artists Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr, who ask: What language do we have to describe the agency of tissue-cultured life? This essay begins to answer this question by tracing a tradition whereby bioengineered meat mediates complex environmental critiques in literary fiction over the past century, including Margaret Atwood’s exemplary novel Oryx and Crake (2003), which depicts biotech industries producing three distinct kinds of …

Kappa Opioid Regulation Of Stress-Related Behavior, Erin Harshberger Jan 2010

Kappa Opioid Regulation Of Stress-Related Behavior, Erin Harshberger

McNair Scholars Journal

Anxiety disorders affect roughly 40 million American adults in a given year. Those suffering from anxiety disorders often experience additional stress-linked illnesses, such as depression. Previous research has shown that stress exposure increases levels of the endogenous neuropeptide dynorphin, which the kappa opioid system is selectively activated by. This study examined the role of the kappa opioid system in regulating stress-related behavior using the elevated plus-maze. Behavioral stress responses were examined in male Wistar rats following i.p. administration of opioid agonist U-50,488 (0 or 10 mg/kg). Subjects were pretreated with the kappa opioid antagonist norbinaltorphimine (nor-BNI) 24 hours prior to …

Mule Deer: A Handbook For Utah Hunters And Landowners, Dennis D. Austin Jan 2010

Mule Deer: A Handbook For Utah Hunters And Landowners, Dennis D. Austin

All USU Press Publications

Mule deer are a familiar sight to residents of Utah and the Intermountain West. Sportsmen hunt them, others seek a glimpse of them while hiking or camping, drivers dodge them, and homeowners sometimes delight, sometimes fret as deer visit backyards and gardens. Deer, many of which live in the towns, cities, and farms that sprawl over their historical habitat, sometimes seem ubiquitous. Useful information about them, either scientific or practical, is less widespread. In this handbook, Dennis Austin fills that need for information, offering a one-stop reference packed with up-to-date knowledge and practical advice on mule deer. Data on deer …

Physics & Astronomy

[1] We are preparing to return humans to the Moon and setting the stage for exploration to Mars and beyond. However, it is unclear if long missions outside of low-Earth orbit can be accomplished with acceptable risk. The central objective of a new modeling project, the Earth-Moon-Mars Radiation Exposure Module (EMMREM), is to develop and validate a numerical module for characterizing time-dependent radiation exposure in the Earth-Moon-Mars and interplanetary space environments. EMMREM is being designed for broad use by researchers to predict radiation exposure by integrating over almost any incident particle distribution from interplanetary space. We detail here the overall …
