Spatiotemporal Structure Of Molecular Evolution Of H5n1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Viruses In Vietnam., Margaret A. Carrel, Michael Emch, R. Todd Jobe, Aaron Moody, Xiu-Feng Wan

CVM Publications

BACKGROUND: Vietnam is one of the countries most affected by outbreaks of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses. First identified in Vietnam in poultry in 2001 and in humans in 2004, the virus has since caused 111 cases and 56 deaths in humans. In 2003/2004 H5N1 outbreaks, nearly the entire poultry population of Vietnam was culled. Our earlier study (Wan et al., 2008, PLoS ONE, 3(10): e3462) demonstrated that there have been at least six independent H5N1 introductions into Vietnam and there were nine newly emerged reassortants from 2001 to 2007 in Vietnam. H5N1 viruses in Vietnam cluster distinctly around …

Ethylene Receptors Function As Components Of High-Molecular-Mass Protein Complexes In Arabidopsis, Yi-Feng Chen, Zhiyong Gao, Robert J. Kerris, Wuyi Wang, Brad M. Binder, G. Eric Schaller Jan 2010

Ethylene Receptors Function As Components Of High-Molecular-Mass Protein Complexes In Arabidopsis, Yi-Feng Chen, Zhiyong Gao, Robert J. Kerris, Wuyi Wang, Brad M. Binder, G. Eric Schaller

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: The gaseous plant hormone ethylene is perceived in Arabidopsis thaliana by a five-member receptor family composed of ETR1, ERS1, ETR2, ERS2, and EIN4. Methodology/Principal Findings: Gel-filtration analysis of ethylene receptors solubilized from Arabidopsis membranes demonstrates that the receptors exist as components of high-molecular-mass protein complexes. The ERS1 protein complex exhibits an ethylene-induced change in size consistent with ligand-mediated nucleation of protein-protein interactions. Deletion analysis supports the participation of multiple domains from ETR1 in formation of the protein complex, and also demonstrates that targeting to and retention of ETR1 at the endoplasmic reticulum only requires the first 147 amino acids …

Tuning A Nose To Forage: Evidence For Olfactory Learning In A Procellariiform Seabird Chicks, Gregory B. Cunningham, Gabrielle A. Nevitt

Biology Faculty/Staff Publications

Burrow nesting procellariiform seabirds use olfactory cues for both foraging and nest recognition. As chicks, burrow nesters develop in the dark, but are exposed to both prey-related and individual-specific scents through contact with their parents. This exposure suggests that chicks may have the opportunity to learn odours while still in the nest. In this study, we examined whether exposure to odourants during development might influence olfactory search behaviour expressed later in life. To test this idea, we exposed eggs of thin-billed prions Pachyptila belcheri to a rosy-scented novel odour (phenyl ethyl alcohol, PEA) or a control (water) just before hatching; …

Proliferation Of Aneuploid Human Cells Is Limited By A P53-Dependent Mechanism, Sarah L. Thompson, Duane A. Compton Jan 2010

Proliferation Of Aneuploid Human Cells Is Limited By A P53-Dependent Mechanism, Sarah L. Thompson, Duane A. Compton

Dartmouth Scholarship

Most solid tumors are aneuploid, and it has been proposed that aneuploidy is the consequence of an elevated rate of chromosome missegregation in a process called chromosomal instability (CIN). However, the relationship of aneuploidy and CIN is unclear because the proliferation of cultured diploid cells is compromised by chromosome missegregation. The mechanism for this intolerance of nondiploid genomes is unknown. In this study, we show that in otherwise diploid human cells, chromosome missegregation causes a cell cycle delay with nuclear accumulation of the tumor suppressor p53 and the cyclin kinase inhibitor p21. Deletion of the p53 gene permits the accumulation …

Representing Multi-Parent Organizational Structures For Use In High Performance Computing Resource Scheduling Algorithms, Lloyd T. Brown Jan 2010

Representing Multi-Parent Organizational Structures For Use In High Performance Computing Resource Scheduling Algorithms, Lloyd T. Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Historically, organizational structures of many universities and corporations have followed a strictly tree-based, hierarchical model. These organizations are defined with no more than one parent organization, and typically resource requirements for the organization could be derived from the parent organization. In recent years, however, many institutions have created interdisciplinary research groups which incorporate multiple fields of research across multiple campus organizations. For example, at Brigham Young University, there exists a biophysics research group, a child organization of both the Department of Biology and the Department of Physics, making it unclear how to define its resource requirements in the context of …

Neural Network Model For Instruments That Store And Retrieve Sequential Information, Philip W. Landfield, Olivier Thibault Jan 2010

Neural Network Model For Instruments That Store And Retrieve Sequential Information, Philip W. Landfield, Olivier Thibault

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents

A method and design is provided for distributing and storing sets of temporally ordered information in a systematic and sequential fashion. This method is based on a model of how the brain functions in the distribution and storage of temporally ordered memories, but it can also be applied to the design of new biological, electronic or optical devices. These devices may be used in the testing and development of new therapeutic drugs, in the detection of toxic agents or impaired performance, or in the development of new industrial and consumer devices in which the orderly storage of sequential information is …

Bayesian Methods For Network-Structured Genomics Data, Stefano Monni, Hongzhe Li Jan 2010

Bayesian Methods For Network-Structured Genomics Data, Stefano Monni, Hongzhe Li

UPenn Biostatistics Working Papers

Graphs and networks are common ways of depicting information. In biology, many different processes are represented by graphs, such as regulatory networks, metabolic pathways and protein-protein interaction networks. This information provides useful supplement to the standard numerical genomic data such as microarray gene expression data. Effectively utilizing such an information can lead to a better identification of biologically relevant genomic features in the context of our prior biological knowledge. In this paper, we present a Bayesian variable selection procedure for network-structured covariates for both Gaussian linear and probit models. The key of our approach is the introduction of a Markov …

UCF Patents

A secure apparatus, system, device and method for coding surface acoustic wave identification tags and sensors to enable unique sensor operation and identification for a multi-sensor environment. In an embodiment, a pseudo noise sequence is applied to the orthogonally coded signal for increased security. An orthogonal frequency coding technique is applied to the SAW tag using periodic reflector gratings for responding to an orthogonal interrogation signal to transmit the sensor identification and sensed data. A transceiver interrogates the sensor with a stepped up chirp corresponding to the orthogonal frequency coded chip frequency response, receives a response from the SAW device, …

Anaerobic Digestion Process For Low-Solid Waste, Peter George Stroot, Matthew Raymond Cutter Jan 2010

Anaerobic Digestion Process For Low-Solid Waste, Peter George Stroot, Matthew Raymond Cutter

USF Patents

An anaerobic digestion process for the treatment of domestic wastewater sludge that requires less space and funding to construct. Sludge to be treated is combined with recycled anaerobic digester sludge to form a blended sludge. The recycled anaerobic digester sludge provides a source of microorganisms necessary to initiate the breakdown of organic matter in the sludge to be treated. The sludge is then concentrated to increase total solids content to about 10-20%. Excess liquid is removed from the concentrated sludge. The concentrated sludge is then digested in an anaerobic reactor system such as a plug-flow reactor. Some benefits of the …
