Background: Ego defense mechanisms (or factors), defined by Freud as unconscious resources used by the ego to reduce conflict between the id and superego, are a reflection of how an individual deals with conflict and stress. This study assesses the prevalence of various ego defense mechanisms employed by medical students of Karachi, which is a group with higher stress levels than the general population. Methods: A questionnaire based cross-sectional study was conducted on 682 students from five major medical colleges of Karachi over 4 weeks in November 2006. Ego defense mechanisms were assessed using the Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ-40) individually …

Sperm Morphometrics In The Diamond-Backed Watersnake, Nerodia Rhombifer Hallowell, With Reference To Possible Implications On Sperm Competition, Jonathan Wade Stanley
Student Theses and Dissertations
A total of 46 male Diamond-backed Watersnakes, Nerodia rhombifer Hallowell were collected from Mallard Lake in Mississippi County, Arkansas and a catfish farm in Desha County, Arkansas to determine effects that the farm may have on sperm morphometrics in this species. Snout-vent lengths (SVL) were recorded and blood samples were collected for hematocrit (Hct) determination. Sperm were collected, viewed by scanning electron microscopy, and measured for overall length, head length, and tail length. Snakes from the fish farm had significantly longer SVL than did snakes from Mallard Lake. No correlation was found between Hct values and SVL, but differences were …

Farnesol Induces Hydrogen Peroxide Resistance In Candida Albicans Yeast By Inhibiting The Ras-Cyclic Amp Signaling Pathway, Aurélie Deveau, Amy E. Piispanen, Angelyca A. Jackson, Deborah A. Hogan
Dartmouth Scholarship
Farnesol, a Candida albicans cell-cell signaling molecule that participates in the control of morphology, has an additional role in protection of the fungus against oxidative stress. In this report, we show that although farnesol induces the accumulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), ROS generation is not necessary for the induction of catalase (Cat1)-mediated oxidative-stress resistance. Two antioxidants, α-tocopherol and, to a lesser extent, ascorbic acid effectively reduced intracellular ROS generation by farnesol but did not alter farnesol-induced oxidative-stress resistance. Farnesol inhibits the Ras1-adenylate cyclase (Cyr1) signaling pathway to achieve its effects on morphology under hypha-inducing conditions, and we demonstrate …

Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) inhibitory factor (Cif) is a virulence factor secreted by Pseudomonas aeruginosa that reduces the quantity of CFTR in the apical membrane of human airway epithelial cells. Initial sequence analysis suggested that Cif is an epoxide hydrolase (EH), but its sequence violates two strictly conserved EH motifs and also is compatible with other alpha/beta hydrolase family members with diverse substrate specificities. To investigate the mechanistic basis of Cif activity, we have determined its structure at 1.8-A resolution by X-ray crystallography. The catalytic triad consists of residues Asp129, His297, and Glu153, which are conserved across the …

Diarylamidines: High Potency Inhibitors Of Acid-Sensing Ion Channels, Xuanmao Chen, Liyan Qiu, Minghua Li, Stefan Grunder, Beverley A. Orser, Zhi-Gang Xiong, John F. Macdonald
Molecular, Cellular & Biomedical Sciences
Acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) are proton-gated cation channels that are predominantly expressed in the nervous system. ASICs are involved in a number of neurological diseases such as pain, ischemic stroke and multiple sclerosis but limited tools are available to target these channels and provide probes for their physiological functions. Here we report that the anti-protozoal diarylamidines, 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI), diminazene, hydroxystilbamidine (HSB) and pentamidine potently inhibit ASIC currents in primary cultured hippocampal neurons with apparent affinities of 2.8 μM, 0.3 μM, 1.5 μM and 38 μM, respectively. These four compounds (100 μM) failed to block ENaC channels expressed in oocytes. Sub-maximal …

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications
Frataxin, a nuclear encoded protein targeted to the mitochondrial matrix, has recently been implicated as an iron chaperone that delivers ferrous iron to the iron-sulfur assembly enzyme IscU. During transport across the mitochondrial membrane, the N-terminal mitochondrial targeting sequence of frataxin is cleaved in a two-step process to produce the mature protein found in the matrix, however N-terminal extended forms of the protein have also been observed in vivo. The recent structural characterization studies of the human frataxin ortholog were performed on a truncated variant of the protein. Here we report the NMR spectral assignment of an extended form of …

Segmentation Of Thermographic Images Of Hands Using A Genetic Algorithm, Payel Ghosh, Judith Gold, Melanie Mitchell
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper presents a new technique for segmenting thermographic images using a genetic algorithm (GA). The individuals of the GA also known as chromosomes consist of a sequence of parameters of a level set function. Each chromosome represents a unique segmenting contour. An initial population of segmenting contours is generated based on the learned variation of the level set parameters from training images. Each segmenting contour (an individual) is evaluated for its fitness based on the texture of the region it encloses. The fittest individuals are allowed to propagate to future generations of the GA run using selection, crossover and …

Ancient Origin Of A Western Mediterranean Radiation Of Subterranean Beetles. Bmc Evolutionary Biology, Ignacio Ribera, Javier Fresneda, Ruxandra Bucur

Background Cave organisms have been used as models for evolution and biogeography, as their reduced above-ground dispersal produces phylogenetic patterns of area distribution that largely match the geological history of mountain ranges and cave habitats. Most current hypotheses assume that subterranean lineages arose recently from surface dwelling, dispersive close relatives, but for terrestrial organisms there is scant phylogenetic evidence to support this view. We study here with molecular methods the evolutionary history of a highly diverse assemblage of subterranean beetles in the tribe Leptodirini (Coleoptera, Leiodidae, Cholevinae) in the mountain systems of the Western Mediterranean.
