The Oxford House Model: A Pathway To Empowerment Of Women, Bronwyn Anne Hunter
The Oxford House Model: A Pathway To Empowerment Of Women, Bronwyn Anne Hunter
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
The construct of empowerment has been utilized in many different contexts and with various populations. Previous research and theory on empowerment emphasized developing empowerment based interventions for underserved and overlooked population. Two populations that could benefit from an empowerment intervention are women who have a history of substance abuse and/or past involvement in the criminal justice system. Research identified many unique barriers and needs for women who abuse substances, such as providing gender-specific programming, trauma focused therapy and counseling, social support, and comprehensive follow up services such as childcare and housing. A subset of women who engage in substance abuse …
Endorsement Of Abstract Ideals Versus Actual Outcomes Of American Ideologies: Nuances Of System Justification Theory, Jennifer Lynn Zimmerman
Endorsement Of Abstract Ideals Versus Actual Outcomes Of American Ideologies: Nuances Of System Justification Theory, Jennifer Lynn Zimmerman
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
America is regarded as the land of opportunity, a nation in which anyone can make a name for him or herself. Individual freedom or individualism is considered the cornerstone of our nation’s values. As an ideal then, Americans, regardless of race, class, gender, ability, and sexual orientation, should be able to achieve their dreams if they work hard. But do Americans believe that everyone has an equal chance of achieving the American dream if only they work hard? System justification theory asserts that people rationalize the status quo and perceive it as inevitable, fair, and just. Moreover, the theory claims …

Procedural Rules Under Washington's Public Records Act: The Case For Agency Discretion, William D. Richard
Procedural Rules Under Washington's Public Records Act: The Case For Agency Discretion, William D. Richard
Washington Law Review
Voters adopted Washington’s Public Records Act (PRA) in 1972 as part of a broader ballot measure to enhance openness in state government. The PRA requires state government agencies, including statewide agencies and municipalities, to establish procedures so that the public can request copies of records agencies generate. The PRA exempts certain records from disclosure, and other statutes and case law supply additional exemptions. When an agency refuses to disclose records, the requester may ask a court to determine whether an exemption applies. If no exemption applies, the court may compel disclosure of the records and impose monetary penalties against the …

The Quantification Of Displacement Of The Anterior Teeth In The Human Dentition, Peggy Jean Van Scotter-Asbach
The Quantification Of Displacement Of The Anterior Teeth In The Human Dentition, Peggy Jean Van Scotter-Asbach
Dissertations (1934 -)
The credibility of bite mark analysis as a forensic science is under fire in our legal system. The basis of opinions regarding the probability of a dental pattern observed in bite mark evidence matching a suspect's dentition has not been objectively substantiated. Though guidelines and standards are in place, bite mark analyses have failed to provide basic scientific methods in order to be deemed of evidentiary value. Forensic scientists need to take a step back and develop valid and reliable methodologies that provide a statistical approach for defining dental characteristics in the human dentition.
For this study, three computer-generated, mathematically …

The Impact Of Parental Risk Factors On Child Outcomes : Examining Parental Incarceration Within A Multiple-Risk Model., Melody Lynn Hyppolite 1976-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The impact of four primary parental risk factors (parental mental illness, parental substance use, parental mental illness, and poverty) on seven child outcomes (school failure, criminal behaviors, being arrested, behavioral difficulties, emotional difficulties, alcohol, and drug use) was examined. The accumulation of multiple risk factors in a child's life was found to significantly increase the likelihood that several negative outcomes would occur. The research, however, suggests further that this is an over simplification of the phenomenon and that specific risk factors are more likely to contribute to specific child outcomes. Depending on the outcome being addressed by programming and policies …
Uk Foreign Policy And Human Rights, Par Engstrom
Uk Foreign Policy And Human Rights, Par Engstrom
Human Rights & Human Welfare
William Hague’s assertion that human rights should constitute the “irreducible core” of foreign policy under the new UK coalition government may seem a radical departure for the new Foreign Secretary. Hague is, after all, a leading figure in the British Conservative Party, which in its recent election manifesto called for the repeal of the UK’s Human Rights Act that incorporates the European Convention on Human Rights into UK law. Given this profound ambivalence over the substantive value of human rights at home, the new UK government is not likely to adopt more assertive human rights policies abroad. Human rights advocates …

Human Rights At The “Core” Of Uk Foreign Policy Requires Respect For Core Human Rights, Erin Mooney
Human Rights & Human Welfare
The true measure of whether human rights indeed are the "irreducible core" of the UK’s new foreign policy will be the extent to which the coalition government respects and protects “core” human rights.

The Racial Geography Of The Federal Death Penalty, G. Ben Cohen, Robert J. Smith
The Racial Geography Of The Federal Death Penalty, G. Ben Cohen, Robert J. Smith
Washington Law Review
Scholars have devoted substantial attention to both the overrepresentation of black defendants on federal death row and the disproportionate number of federal defendants charged capitally for the murder of white victims. This attention has not explained (much less resolved) these disquieting racial disparities. Little research has addressed the unusual geography of the federal death penalty, in which a small number of jurisdictions are responsible for the vast majority of federal death sentences. By addressing the unique geography, we identify a possible explanation for the racial distortions in the federal death penalty: that federal death sentences are sought disproportionately where the …

Student And Faculty Perceptions Of Technology’S Usefulness In Community College General Education Courses, William L. Moseley
Student And Faculty Perceptions Of Technology’S Usefulness In Community College General Education Courses, William L. Moseley
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Educational institutions of all levels invest large amounts of time and resources into instructional technology, with the goal of enhancing the educational effectiveness of the learning environment. The decisions made by instructors and institutions regarding the implementation of technology are guided by perceptions of usefulness held by those who are in control. The primary objective of this mixed methods study was to examine the student and faculty perceptions of technology being used in general education courses at a community college. This study builds upon and challenges the assertions of writers such as Prensky (2001a, 2001b) and Tapscott (1998) who claim …
Predicting Problematic Approach Behavior Toward Politicians: Exploring The Potential Contributions Of Control Theory, Douglas Owen Cacialli
Predicting Problematic Approach Behavior Toward Politicians: Exploring The Potential Contributions Of Control Theory, Douglas Owen Cacialli
Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The potential merits of Carver and Scheier's (1981) control theory in the prediction of targeted violence are reviewed and several novel indicators of risk that are consistent with this theory are suggested for study. It was hypothesized that: (a) similarity between inappropriate contact with politicians and extremist group literature and writings; (b) the temporal proximity to violent or otherwise criminal actions and notable anniversaries of such groups; (c) detailed specification of a plan to engage in problematic approach behavior, and; (d) self-focus, will be significant predictors of problematic approach behavior. A sample of 506 individuals who engaged in threatening or …
