Reverbotone - Visualize Music With Design., William Baxter Bledsoe
Reverbotone - Visualize Music With Design., William Baxter Bledsoe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis was written as a supporting paper for a graphic design exhibit for a Master of Fine Arts Degree. The focus of my work is to visualize an interpretation of a collection of songs that make up an album in which the design communicates the content of the body of music.
This thesis showcases a record that actually exists but has never been released. This affords me the opportunity to create a design that defines the content of the record work in a visual manner. This thesis paper covers the methods and motivations by which I arrived to the …

The Enthymematic Model Of Meaning-Making In Video Games: Towards Narratively Designed Transmedia Texts, Kevin Human
The Enthymematic Model Of Meaning-Making In Video Games: Towards Narratively Designed Transmedia Texts, Kevin Human
All Theses
After introducing the ludological and narratological sides of modern video game theory, we explain Ian Bogost's concept of procedural rhetoric. We go on to argue that procedural rhetoric in practice is a form of what Stephen Dinehart and others have called narrative design. Furthermore, we argue that narrative design principles fall into the Aristotelian, enthymematic form of knowledge creation. We then cite examples of effective narrative design in video games and show how they fit the enthymematic model. We conclude with a discussion of how the epistemic principles of narrative design are applicable to a transmedia design context and how …

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
In the merge of multimedia literature in Malaysia, the genre which takes the most impact is poetry. It is due to its nature for being simple and easy than any other types of genre in literature. With the increasing growth of multimedia technology, writers are able to get their works published via electronic media, which offers websites purposely created for that particular need. The passion to create extraordinary masterpieces start to become a demand among experimentative writers. There are no more barriers for those who are willing to be more passionate. In order to create extraordinary masterpieces like implementing their …
Cultural Variation In The Visual Aspects Of Television Commercials: Comparing The Use And Effect Of Field Information In Chinese And Us Television Commercials, Jin Liu
All Theses
Cross-cultural psychology literature demonstrates cultural variation in visual perception patterns and field information inclusion in static visual designs between Chinese and American cultures. This study attempts to empirically investigate whether such variation exists in these two cultures' video images such as television commercials, and whether the commercials customized to cultural preference are more effective than others as previous research suggests. The research results correspond to previous claims about the visual design patterns in Chinese and American cultures, based on which suggestions for cinematic practice are provided. This research contends that variation in information inclusion and exclusion rules manifests differences in …

Text, Graphics, And Multimedia Materials Employed In Learning A Computer-Based Procedural Task, Kari Christine Carlson Coffindaffer
Text, Graphics, And Multimedia Materials Employed In Learning A Computer-Based Procedural Task, Kari Christine Carlson Coffindaffer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The present research study investigated the interaction of graphic design students with different forms of software training materials. Four versions of the procedural task instructions were developed (A) Traditional Textbook with Still Images, (B) Modified Text with Integrated Still Images, (C) Onscreen Modified Text with Silent Onscreen Video and (D) Onscreen Narrated Video for four computer tasks. Two research questions guided the study: Research Question 1: Are there any significant differences in student learning of a computer-based procedural task due to the format of the training materials? Research Question 2: Do individual differences in prior knowledge and spatial abilities make …

Reading With A Critical Global Perspective: A Study Of Children's & Adolescent's Literature On South Asia, 1989-2009., Manika Subi Lakshmanan
Dissertations
This study examines how children’s and adolescent’s literature promotes global awareness, cross-cultural understanding and cosmopolitanism. It proposes an alternative critical global perspective in the teaching of complex narratives dealing with socio-economic and political transformations in the developing world, with specific reference to South Asian societies. Reframing how transcultural literature is read, a critical global perspective combines global perspectives distilled from theories of development, human rights and international relations, Michel Foucault’s notion of discourse and critical analysis, and textual and visual analysis (Stephens, 1992; Kress and van Leeuwen, 1996). This multidimensional approach contributed 20 questions that explored the gap between cultural …
Rethinking System Diagrams: From Arranging Components To Organizing Action, Thought, And Possibility, Soojin Jun, Miso Kim, Joonhwan Lee
Rethinking System Diagrams: From Arranging Components To Organizing Action, Thought, And Possibility, Soojin Jun, Miso Kim, Joonhwan Lee
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The use of system diagrams has encouraged information designers to tacitly consider the holistic context. However, because the traditional understanding about the nature of systems has been highly focused on the arrangement of components within a static model, users’ experience is considered little. The goal of this research is to provide a theoretical framework to broaden designers’ conception of the system diagram and enable them to design system diagrams that would prove most effective for different situations, needs, and design problems. Therefore, the key of system diagrams is to understand the relationship of how the system is organized, according to …
On The Impact Of Systemic Thinking In Sustainable Design, Ricardo Sosa, Alberto Dorantes, César Cárdenas, Victor Martínez
On The Impact Of Systemic Thinking In Sustainable Design, Ricardo Sosa, Alberto Dorantes, César Cárdenas, Victor Martínez
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The world faces significant problems of high complexity. The potential of knowledge, methods and tools used in design education and practice are useful for the development of sustainable solutions. Sustainable design is regarded in this paper as the integration of multiple competencies in order to generate and implement creative interventions that trigger positive changes in complex socio-technical systems. In this paper, a multidisciplinary case study is created for experimentation on the way in which different student groups approach complex problems, the type and level of thinking used, and the evaluation of the adequateness of their proposals by experts. The groups …

Dis/Ability Teaches Design!, Tom Bieling
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In our paper, we claim that general human and artificial communication systems might be enriched by acknowledging and adding specifics of different ways of communication, perception and locomotion that refer to bodily impairment (Bieling, 2009). Schillmeier (2009, 79ff) sees disability less as an effect of bodily impairment, but more as a phenomenon of social construction. Oriented towards Science, Technology and Society Studies (STS) he conceptualizes disability as a “heterogenic, material event”, which connects “social and non-social relations of human and non-human actors, of things, bodies, technologies, sensorical pratices” and becomes able to be experienced in the sense of disabling as …

Joinedupdesign For Academies: Enhancing Design Learning Through Complexity, John Butcher, Friedemann Schaber
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper reports on research undertaken on the Sorrell Foundation’s Joinedupdesign for Academies programme, a pilot scheme with four universities in the United Kingdom (UK) aiming to inform the transition of ‘failing’ secondary (11-18) schools into academies (involving substantial re-designs and re-building). From the authors’ university, 12 undergraduate Design students participated in Joinedupdesign for Academies, in partnership with two secondary schools in the Midlands region of England. Like other universities in the UK, it has well-established links with local schools and programmes of community engagement, corresponding with reported US experiences (Lerner & Simon, 1998). The Sorrell Foundation model is an …
