Refashioning Old Clothes: Secondhand Fashion, Meaning, And Liquid Modern Consumption, Keeley M. Buehler
Refashioning Old Clothes: Secondhand Fashion, Meaning, And Liquid Modern Consumption, Keeley M. Buehler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study takes a critical look at consumption in liquid modernity as it plays out in secondhand shops. Interviews with secondhand shop owners and shoppers demonstrate that secondhand fashion has the potential to promote individuality and foster relationships, ultimately encouraging a reflexive approach to consumption. It also becomes clear that secondhand shoppers are more concerned with how they consume than what they consume. Secondhand shoppers situate how they approach consuming as a facet of their identity that qualifies them as expert shoppers. In addition, shoppers are aware that how they use secondhand fashion is an opportunity for individuality. Shop owners …

The Need For Effective Visual Communication: How Website Design Can Further The Success Of The Cal Poly Women’S Lacrosse Team, Bonnie J. Burtis
The Need For Effective Visual Communication: How Website Design Can Further The Success Of The Cal Poly Women’S Lacrosse Team, Bonnie J. Burtis
Journalism
This paper argues that an efficient and successfully built website is crucial to the future success of college sports websites. By focusing on the Cal Poly Women’s Lacrosse team and its website, visual communication research gives insight into what works and what does not. The fundamental and design elements examined include: text elements, site navigation, accessible links, presence of news, communication and graphics (visual design). These are the elements that promote success and efficiency. Compared to other websites built and maintained by teams in the women’s lacrosse league, Cal Poly’s lacks foundational website material. General website research proves this and …

Architecture As An Educational Tool: University Of Connecticut School Of Architecture, Nicholas Mundo
Architecture Theses and Projects
I propose a school of architecture focused on holistic approach to design, taking consideration for the various related fields to offer a positive learning environment. The building itself will serve as an educational tool, providing space for interactions to occur and for visitors to understand the inner workings of a school of architecture. The building should represent a progressive thought process and promote creativity and collaboration.

Improving Design For Sequential Instructions, Corin Cianfrocco
Improving Design For Sequential Instructions, Corin Cianfrocco
Theses
Developing effective instructions for complex, sequential tasks is a challenging information design problem. The focus of this thesis is on the non-verbal, visual explanations. This thesis attempts to define a set of instructional communication standards necessary to develop highly functional graphic design solutions to complex instructional information. These standards are then applied to free-weight instructions to improve their clarity and usability. Free weights, or dumbbells, are heavy-weight, metal bars that are lifted in repetitive steps to gain or tone muscles through resistance. When attempting to use currently available free-weight instructions, most people are unsure how to interpret them. This can …

Comparison Of Telemedicine To Traditional Face-To-Face Care For Children With Special Health Care Needs: Analysis Of Cost, Caring, And Family- Centered Care, Family Cost Survey, Caring Professional Scale, Measure Of Processes Of Care 20-Item Scale, Mary A. Hooshmand
Open Access Dissertations
It is estimated that one out of every five household with children in the United States includes a Child with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN). Families of CSHCN face many challenges including financial burdens beyond that of other families and difficulty accessing much needed pediatric specialty care. Telemedicine provides a potential solution or, at the least, an alternative to the traditional system of care, for health care providers and communities to address access and financial concerns of families of CSHCN. A quasi-experimental research design was used in this study to examine the differences in cost, caring, and family-centered care in …

Memory Created, Maria Fabrizio
Memory Created, Maria Fabrizio
Theses and Dissertations
Memory is like afternoon light penetrating the windows of a fast moving car. The light coming through the trees creates images, reveals objects and faces, and introduces fluctuating sensations of warmth and coolness. Sometimes these images appear in logical sequences and at other times they are fleeting, surreal, and ambiguous. While memories are often presented linearly as fact, in actuality our stories only grasp at the truth. They are fragmented, imagined, and rearranged. By examining the intersection of reality and imagination in memories we see retelling as an act of creativity.
Visualizing Cultural Impermanence Through Entropic Design, Clifford Meena Khalili
Visualizing Cultural Impermanence Through Entropic Design, Clifford Meena Khalili
Theses and Dissertations
Entropy is a process of gradual decline as a system loses the strength to maintain itself. It begins with disorder and results in complete transformation. As a multi-cultural American, it has been my experience that the maintenance of my Iranian heritage parallels this concept. A method of visual communication that incorporates entropy is able to express notions of impermanence, disorder and transformation. This project is focused on employing entropy in the process of design and image making by using the transformation of my cultural identity as primary content.

Wearing My Heart On My Sleeve, Sam Hunter
Wearing My Heart On My Sleeve, Sam Hunter
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Wearing My Heart On My Sleeve is a collection of fabric and fiber works that focus on issues related to my recovery from a heart attack. Using the hospital gown and other garment forms as templates for self-portraiture, I explore the emotions surrounding the diagnosis and subsequent management of my chronic health condition. My art-making process combines tradition and technology, using modern, high-speed sewing machines and computers to create the fabric for contemporary interpretations of traditional garment and needlecraft forms. I am also concerned with the use of language and words as critical design elements for the fabrics I create. …

Before Apple can wow its legions of devotees and win over new ones with its latest offerings, it needs a group of industrial designers to work their magic first. Highly integral to a product’s success yet often falling below the radar screen as a profession, industrial design involves a unique combination of factors – from studying market trends and human behaviour to conjuring new product categories. But what does it take for organisations to cultivate industrial design as a key competency?
