Improving The Energy-Efficiency Of Buildings: The Impact Of Environmental Policy On Technological Innovation, Joëlle Noailly Oct 2010

Improving The Energy-Efficiency Of Buildings: The Impact Of Environmental Policy On Technological Innovation, Joëlle Noailly

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper investigates the impact of alternative environmental policy instruments on technological innovations aiming to improve energy-efficiency in buildings. The empirical analysis focuses on three main types of policy instruments, namely regulatory energy standards in buildings codes, energy taxes as captured by energy prices and specific governmental energy R&D expenditures. Technological innovation is measured using patent counts for specific technologies related to energy-efficiency in buildings (e.g. insulation, high-efficiency boilers, energy-saving lightings). The estimates for seven European countries over the 1989-2004 period imply that a strengthening of 10% of the minimum insulation standards for walls would increase the likelihood to file …

Hidden In Plain View: Legal Geography From A Visual Perspective, Irus Braverman Oct 2010

Hidden In Plain View: Legal Geography From A Visual Perspective, Irus Braverman

Journal Articles

Law, with a capital “L” at least, is not particularly fond of hiding itself. In order to be effective, law must be asserted in the world; it must be acknowledged; and, most importantly, it must be visually seen. Why, then, would law hide itself in space? And, perhaps more importantly, how would it do so? And why would such hidden places of law be of importance to us? This paper explores the dual project of seeing and concealing within the context of legal geography. It examines how law sees the physical landscape and how it is seen from a spatial …

Individual Contributions To Stigma And Attitudes Toward Help-Seeking Among Rural Emerging Adult College Students, Margaret Gsell Oct 2010

Individual Contributions To Stigma And Attitudes Toward Help-Seeking Among Rural Emerging Adult College Students, Margaret Gsell

Theses and Dissertations

Rural communities are by definition less densely populated and more geographically isolated than non-rural communities, which often translates into higher rates of poverty and poor access to health care, especially mental health care. Previous research has found that persons residing in rural communities endorse higher rates of stigmatized beliefs towards individuals with mental illness and subsequently lower rates of professional help-seeking when compared to persons residing in non-rural communities. This study evaluated whether these attitudes were also present among emerging adults (18-24 years old) who had lived in a rural community for at least 10 years and were currently enrolled …

Making A Cantonese-Christian Family: Quotidian Habits Of Language And Background In A Transnational Hongkonger Church, Justin K. H. Tse Oct 2010

Making A Cantonese-Christian Family: Quotidian Habits Of Language And Background In A Transnational Hongkonger Church, Justin K. H. Tse

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Studies of the Hong Kong‐Vancouver transnational migration network seldom pay close attention to religion in the everyday lives of Hongkonger migrants. Based on 9 months of ethnographic fieldwork at St. Matthew's Church, a Hong Kong church in Metro Vancouver, this paper examines the tacit assumptions and taken‐for‐granted quotidian practices through which a Hongkonger church is made. I argue that St. Matthew's Church has been constructed as a Hong Kong Cantonese‐Christian family space through the everyday use of language and invocations of a common educational background. This argument extends the literature on Hongkonger migration to Metro Vancouver by grounding it in …

Research For Design: Exploring Student And Instructor Attitudes Toward Accessing Library Resources And Services From Course Management Systems (Cms), Merinda Mclure, Karen Munro

Communications in Information Literacy

The authors report a study concerning student and instructor attitudes toward accessing library resources and services from within course management systems (CMS). In spring 2008, the authors conducted semi-structured interviews with a small population of students and instructors at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) and at Colorado State University (CSU). They asked participants to respond to examples of library integrations in course management systems at other institutions and to report their local experiences with both the campus CMS and library services. Participant responses frequently challenged and complicated the authors' assumptions about best practices in integrating a library presence and …

Protection And Comparative Advantage Of Rice Production In Bangladesh: A Policy Analysis Matrix, Abu Hayat Md. Saiful Islam, Dieter Kirschke

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

The study determines the policy incentive in terms of protection and efficiency of production through comparative advantages in the rice sector by using policy analysis matrix (PAM) for the period of 2003 to 2005 nominal average on the basis of secondary data from different published and unpublished sources. From policy analysis matrix in-line with private/financial profit, social/economic profit and policy divergences/transfers various protection coefficients such as NPCO, NPCI, EPC and PC and competiveness coefficients such as DRC, SCB, SNRL and PNRL were derived to measure the level of protection and comparative advantage in the rice sector of Bangladesh. The results of …
