The Origin, Notions, Extent And Outcome Of Bilingualism: Implication For Effective Teaching And Learning Of English Language In Nigerian Junior Secondary Schools, Ruth Adebile Jan 2010

The Origin, Notions, Extent And Outcome Of Bilingualism: Implication For Effective Teaching And Learning Of English Language In Nigerian Junior Secondary Schools, Ruth Adebile

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The meaning and definition of bilingualism varies tremendously from one situation to the other. The Webster Dictionary (1961) defines bilingualism as having or using two languages especially as spoken with the frequency characteristics of a native speaker; a person using two languages especially habitually and with control like that of a native speaker.

Academic Achievement And Demographic Traits Of Homeschool Students: A Nationwide Study, Brian Ray Jan 2010

Academic Achievement And Demographic Traits Of Homeschool Students: A Nationwide Study, Brian Ray

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The body of research on home-based education has expanded dramatically since the first studies and academic articles of the late 1970s that dealt with the modern homeschool movement. Numerous researchers have examined the academic achievement of home-educated children and youth, their social, emotional, and psychological development, and their success into adulthood, and various aspects of homeschool families in general. Researchers have also explored myriad other aspects and issues related to home education in disciplines such as philosophy, sociology, and law. Only a handful of studies, however, have looked closely at a large nationwide sample of home educators and their children …

An Examination Of Tension In The Space Between Leadership Philosophy And The Cultural Reality Of Schools, Lisa Starr Jan 2010

An Examination Of Tension In The Space Between Leadership Philosophy And The Cultural Reality Of Schools, Lisa Starr

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Diversity is what gives our society depth and arguably beauty but it also problematizes already complex social issues like the importance and value placed on the education. In part, this challenge exists because public education is founded on the “values and belief systems of the dominant cultural and linguistic class” (Goddard & Hart, 2007, p. 16) yet schools are a complex, heterogeneous weave of cultures (Murakami-Ramalho, 2008). According to Chambers (2003), Canadian students are “probably the most ethnically, racially, linguistically, and religiously diverse of any school population in the world” (p. 223). This is no less true in the United …

Developing Critical Thinking Skills Of Pre-Service Teachers In Ghana: Teaching Methods And Classroom Ecology, Charles Owu-Ewie Jan 2010

Developing Critical Thinking Skills Of Pre-Service Teachers In Ghana: Teaching Methods And Classroom Ecology, Charles Owu-Ewie

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The study sought to answer these questions: How do the teaching strategies employed by Ghanaian initial teacher educators and the classroom ecology they create affects the thinking skills of pre-service teachers? And what can be done to improve pre-service teachers’ thinking through teaching methods and classroom ecology? The study employed a qualitative case study approach to investigate the problem at Akatakyiman Teacher Training College (a pseudonym) in Ghana. Teachers in science, mathematics and social studies and students were interviewed and observed.

Family Structure Characteristics And Academic Success: Supporting The Work Of School Counselors, Gerra Perkins, Kayla Milstead Jan 2010

Family Structure Characteristics And Academic Success: Supporting The Work Of School Counselors, Gerra Perkins, Kayla Milstead

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The family is a child’s primary context for socialization and greatly affects a child’s well-being. Historical contexts show that families have been evolving for centuries due to social and economic factors, thus resulting in various family structures. A stable, traditional family structure is most conducive to academic success (Tillman, 2007). Much research has found that children raised in a non-traditional home are at a disadvantage (Astone & McLanahan, 1991; Halpern-Meekin & Tach, 2008). The research on the consequences of single-parent families suggests children of single parent families are more likely to be impoverished, to break the law, to abuse drugs, …

Gendered Leadership Dynamics And Rural Community Development In Nigeria: The Case Study Of Iyaloja And Lyalaje Women Leaders In Ekiti State, Gadebo Jan 2010

Gendered Leadership Dynamics And Rural Community Development In Nigeria: The Case Study Of Iyaloja And Lyalaje Women Leaders In Ekiti State, Gadebo

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Rural areas are usually referred to as small, inward-looking, and idyllic communities held together by kinship relations and supporting basic agricultural occupations (Ekong, 2003). The characteristic features that differentiate rural from urban areas include: size, particularly areas inhabited by the people, low population density, homogeneity, presence of few social classes, low standard of living, presence of few / no social amenities such as electricity, pipe-borne water, low social mobility, mainly agrarian in nature – producing the bulk of food consumed in urban areas and the attendant drifting of young able-men to cities in order to benefit from the urban resources …

Job Satisfaction And Motivation: Understanding Its Impact On Employee Commitment And Organisational Performance, Kwasi Dartey-Baah, Agatha Harlley Jan 2010

Job Satisfaction And Motivation: Understanding Its Impact On Employee Commitment And Organisational Performance, Kwasi Dartey-Baah, Agatha Harlley

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Organisations have been described as a social arrangement for the controlled performance of collective goals (Stewart, 1973). They exist basically for two reasons: to maximise profit or share holder value, (Huczynski and Buchanan, 1991). Latest trends in management encourage the integration of the needs of employees with that of organisations. Maximising profit through growth/expansion and increased share value should not be the only motivation for organisations. Investment in people should be at the fore of business strategy and in developing human resources which invariably benefits the respective organisations. The role and effective use and management of human resources in enhancing …

An Evaluation Of Nomadic Education Programme In Nigeria, Israel Osokoya, Morayo Atinmo, S.A. Ajayi, A. Sarumi

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The global consensus is that education is a process that helps the whole human being, physically, mentally morally, socially and technologically. This enables one to function in any environment in which one may find oneself. Education also performs a major role in equipping the individual with the skills and knowledge which would help to transform any economy. Thus, it is the greatest investment that any nation can make for the quick development of its economic, political, sociological and human resources. Believing that education is the cornerstone for national development, Nigeria has adapted education as the “principal instrument par excellence” for …

College-Readiness: The Current State Of Affairs, W. Barnes

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Imagine a nation in which every student, from Boston to Houston, from Cleveland to Miami, from Chicago’s South side to Compton, from a New Mexico Indian reservation to the Appalachian Mountains, characteristically graduates from high school prepared for postsecondary training (i.e., college, university, trade school, or workforce training). Further, imagine being able to say to every child “you will be provided with a high school that will educate you, challenge you, care for you, support you, and graduate you ready to compete and succeed in this world” (Balfanz & Letgers, 2004, p. 2). The current realities of the proposed outcomes …

Developing Improvisation Skills For Alleviating Poverty In Nigeria: The Place Of Chemistry In Entrepreneurship Education, Jacobson Nbina, B. Viko, S.T. Birabil Jan 2010

Developing Improvisation Skills For Alleviating Poverty In Nigeria: The Place Of Chemistry In Entrepreneurship Education, Jacobson Nbina, B. Viko, S.T. Birabil

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

One of the goals of Education in Nigeria is the acquisition of appropriate skills, the development of mental, physical and social abilities and competencies as equipment for individual to live in and contribute to the development of the society (Federal Government of Nigeria, 2004). The realization of this goal can be impeded by non-availability of science equipment that can ensure effective teaching and learning. Many authors have, however, reported the issue of inadequacy of science equipment in educational institutions in Nigeria. (Ogunleye, 2007 in Ugwu, 2008; Ogunmade et al 2006; Nwagbo, 2008; Bajah, 1982; Osobonye, 2002). It has also been …

Parental Education, Parental Death, Poverty And Socio-Economic Impact On School Attendance Status Of Children In India, Subhash Barman Jan 2010

Parental Education, Parental Death, Poverty And Socio-Economic Impact On School Attendance Status Of Children In India, Subhash Barman

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Parental education plays an important link for intergenerational mobility. Parental education is, of course, one aspect of family background that influences children’s subsequent achievement as adults. The general view is that the higher educated parents provide adequate environment, which facilitates their children’s opportunities for educational attainments. There is also a positive relationship between parental education, especially mother’s education, and educational attainment of children. Corwyn and Bradely (2002) found that maternal education had the most consistent direct influence on children’s cognitive and behavioural outcomes with some indirect influence through a cognitively stimulating home environment.

When Love Turns Lethal: A Content Analysis Of Intimate Partner Violence In Print Media, Ashley Maddox

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current study conducted a content analysis of newspaper articles in a Florida newspaper, the Orlando Sentinel. The study spanned across a five-year time period from 2004-2009, featuring 198 articles on domestic violence homicide. The current study is a replication of previous research conducted using the same newspaper during 1995-2000. Victim blame, tone, and descriptions of the perpetrator and victim were among several items of interest. Findings reveal a slight increase in victim blaming statements and a larger increase in positive portrayals of the victims of domestic violence homicide.

Factors That Influence Classroom Engagement, Tracy Lynn Wilk Jan 2010

Factors That Influence Classroom Engagement, Tracy Lynn Wilk

Theses and Graduate Projects

In schools throughout the country, students are not engaged in classroom learning. When students not engaged in the classroom, they become disenchanted with the entire school experience, which may eventually lead them to drop out of school before their high school graduation. There are groups of students who are at higher risk for dropping out of school early. Students who receive special education services are among some of those who are at risk for dropping out of school. I had often encountered students who were not engaged in the classroom and I did not want my students to become dropout …

Language Matters: A Guide To Everyday Questions About Language, Donna Jo Napoli, V. Lee-Schoenfeld Jan 2010

Language Matters: A Guide To Everyday Questions About Language, Donna Jo Napoli, V. Lee-Schoenfeld

Linguistics Faculty Works

Is Ebonics really a dialect or simply bad English? Do women and men speak differently? Will computers ever really learn human language? Does offensive language harm children? These are only a few of the issues surrounding language that crop up every day. Most of us have very definite opinions on these questions one way or another. Yet as linguists Donna Jo Napoli and Vera Lee-Schoenfeld point out in this short and thoroughly readable volume, many of our most deeply held ideas about the nature of language and its role in our lives are either misconceived or influenced by myths and …

Predicting Crime, M. Todd Henderson, Justin Wolfers, Eric Zitzewitz Jan 2010

Predicting Crime, M. Todd Henderson, Justin Wolfers, Eric Zitzewitz

Articles

Prediction markets have been proposed for a variety of public policy purposes, but no one has considered their application in perhaps the most obvious policy area.: crime. This Article proposes and examines the use of prediction markets to forecast crime rates and the potential impact on crime policy, such as changes in resource allocation, policing strategies, sentencing, post-conviction treatment, and so on. First, we argue that prediction markets are especially useful in crime rate forecasting and criminal policy analysis because information relevant to decisionmakers is voluminous, dispersed, and difficult to process efficiently. After surveying the current forecasting practices and techniques, …

Hybridization: A Study In Comparative Constitutional Law, John Mceldowney Jan 2010

Hybridization: A Study In Comparative Constitutional Law, John Mceldowney

Penn State International Law Review (1982 - 2011)

Viewing constitutional law from a global perspective informs us about trends and concurrences that might otherwise go unnoticed. The main focus for this paper is how a new European legal tradition is being forged from two of the most influential Western traditions, the common and civil law. The term hybridization is used to refer to this phenomenon whereby there is convergence between different legal systems. This does not necessarily alter national sovereignty or substitute one system over another. It cannot be measured by success or failure of one legal system over another. It is a common sharing that is best …

The Israel Of God: A Literary-Historical And Sociological Examination Of Paul's Use Of Israel, Thomas Joshua Whitley Jan 2010

The Israel Of God: A Literary-Historical And Sociological Examination Of Paul's Use Of Israel, Thomas Joshua Whitley

MA in Religion Theses

This paper attempts to test the hypothesis that the meaning of the term "Israel" actually was open to debate and that Paul was not the only one who defined "Israel" in such a way as to endorse a particular understanding of the term. This paper further examines whether there was literary precedence for Paul's use of Israel. These claims are examined how the use of "Israel" expanded during the relatively short period of time between the appearance of post-exilic Israelite literature and Paul's writings. This is accomplished by citing various examples of Jewish and Christian literature during this time period.
