The Role Of The Rail System In The Sydney Journey To Work – A Geospatial Analysis, Kym Norley Jan 2010

The Role Of The Rail System In The Sydney Journey To Work – A Geospatial Analysis, Kym Norley

World Transit Research

This paper presents a baseline analysis of the relationship between Sydney’s rail network, commuter belt journey to work travel patterns and Sydney’s urban development from historic, current and future perspectives, and examines how the rail links mooted in the Metropolitan Transport Plan relate to planned development. It reports part of a program of urban planning research that will lead to an understanding of the physical and economic sustainability impact of deferral of public transport infrastructure investment in a growing metropolis. The analysis draws largely on the 2006 Census data and State Government data, using geospatial mapping. It examines patterns of …

Mad Subalgebras And Lie Subalgebras Of An Enveloping Algebra, Xin Tang Jan 2010

Mad Subalgebras And Lie Subalgebras Of An Enveloping Algebra, Xin Tang

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Let µ(?(1)) denote the enveloping algebra of the two-dimensional nonabelian Lie algebra ?(1) over a base field K. We study the maximal abelian ad-nilpotent (mad) associative subalgebras and finite-dimensional Lie subalgebras of µ(?(1)). We first prove that the set of noncentral elements of µ(?(1)) admits the Dixmier partition, µ(?(1))?K=? 5i=1 ?i, and establish characterization theorems for elements in ?i, i=1,3,4. Then we determine the elements in ?i, i=1,3, and describe the eigenvalues for the inner derivation ad Bx,x??i, i=3,4. We also derive other useful results for elements in ?i, i=2,3,4,5. As an application, we find all framed mad subalgebras of …

Do We Fit The Bill? A Quantitative Study Of Substance Use At A Small Liberal Arts College, Genevieve Vaida

Theses & ETDs

Research has often focused on the power of descriptive and injunctive norms, amongst different referent groups, and how these can predict how and why people behave in specific ways. The current thesis studies the issues of perceived substance use and its affect on individual student behavior at a small, liberal, arts college, as well as examining the relationship between sense of belonging and substance use. Research was conducted on-campus through an online self-reporting survey in the January interim of 2010. …

Why Accommodate? Reflections On The Gay Marriage Culture Wars, Maggie Gallagher Jan 2010

Why Accommodate? Reflections On The Gay Marriage Culture Wars, Maggie Gallagher

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

If same-sex marriage is a basic right, then why accommodate opposing views? This Article proposes four potential types of reasons why citizens, legislators, and/or judges who endorse gay marriage should consider accommodating those with opposing views on marriage: practical, civic, moral sympathy, and principle. It argues that the most urgent need is to develop the argument arguments from civic good and moral sympathy, such as those which have undergirded conscience protections for abortion. The Article further explains why people from traditional faith communities reasonably fear that same-sex marriage will be used as a weapon to repress religious and moral dissent and …

A Crisis Of Consciousness Volkisch Occultism In Austria And Germany, 1890-1933, Shanna Turner Jan 2010

A Crisis Of Consciousness Volkisch Occultism In Austria And Germany, 1890-1933, Shanna Turner

Theses & ETDs

The nineteenth century saw an occult revival throughout the Western world, but this occult revival impacted Germany uniquely. In the rest of Europe interest in the occult was a fad that died out within a few short years. This was not the case in the German-speaking world, where the social, political and economic atmosphere created conditions particularly well suited to fostering the occult. This thesis analyzes the unique conditions in nineteenth century Austria and Germany that resulted in the vlkisch occult movement and the writers and thinkers who created the ideologies of the movement. One cannot address German occultism without, …

Habla Ingles An Examination Of Programs Of Ell Education In The United States, Mary Lace Guilfoil Jan 2010

Habla Ingles An Examination Of Programs Of Ell Education In The United States, Mary Lace Guilfoil

Theses & ETDs

Due to school accountability legislation such as No Child Left Behind (NCLB), students with limited proficiency in English have become an important part of the education system. Schools must provide these students with special accommodations and show improvement in test scores as a result. However, the federal government provides few guidelines for the types of accommodations that should be made, or the methods of education that should be followed. For this reason, a wide array of programs for English Language Learner (ELL) education are in place in the United States. This thesis aims to investigate some of these different methods …
