Acculturation Of Russian Refugee Adolescents: The Life Domain Of Peer Relationships, Andrew A. Morozov Jan 2010

Acculturation Of Russian Refugee Adolescents: The Life Domain Of Peer Relationships, Andrew A. Morozov

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative study was to uncover the meaning of acculturation as experienced by the Russian refugee adolescents in the domain of peer relationships. This qualitative study implemented a purposeful sampling strategy. In-depth interviews were conducted with 12 refugee adolescents from Russia (3 ethnic Russians and 9 Meskhetian Turks), male and female, aged 15-18, who resided in Denver, Colorado. Applying Moustakas's (1994) phenomenology method of analysis, 8 main themes emerged. The essence of the phenomenon can be described in terms of the refugee adolescents' need for self-worth and belongingness. Belongingness is understood as identification with and acceptance by …

Re-Enchanting The Corporation, Lyman P.Q. Johnson Jan 2010

Re-Enchanting The Corporation, Lyman P.Q. Johnson

Scholarly Articles

This Essay begins with Max Weber’s observation that the condition of the modern world is “disenchanted” and goes on to argue that contesting the notion of disenchantment offers a promising framework for rethinking baseline issues in corporate law and corporate life more generally. After elaborating what disenchantment meant to Weber, this Essay offers two counter-observations. First, the world may not be better off as a result of disenchantment. Second, as an empirical matter the world may not really be “disenchanted” given the substantial number of people who both hold religious beliefs and consistently report that those beliefs influence how they …

Gender Identity Disorder Controversies : Male To Female Transgender/Sexual Focuses, Tuyet Noriega Jan 2010

Gender Identity Disorder Controversies : Male To Female Transgender/Sexual Focuses, Tuyet Noriega

Graduate Research Papers

This literature review discusses Gender Identity disorder disputes and influences from research. Choosing a sex (male or female) is not something people consciously decide. However, there are individuals who do need to decide a sex that is not his or her chosen identity. When an individual chooses to dress as the opposite sex this creates discussion of nature versus nurture, and other dilemmas experienced by society and GID individuals. Most transgender individuals seek some form of medical or mental assistance; therefore, it is necessary for mental health counselors, doctors, and social workers to be aware of Gender Identity Disorder indicators. …

Always Judged: A Case Study Of An Interview Using Conversation Analysis, Linda F. Smith Jan 2010

Always Judged: A Case Study Of An Interview Using Conversation Analysis, Linda F. Smith

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

Legal interviews are infrequently recorded and rarely studied. The few empirical studies of actual legal interviews have been primarily critical of the lawyers for being too controlling, eager to impose a solution on the clients, and uninterested in the message the clients want to convey. This article presents a case study of something heretofore unavailable – an experienced, expert attorney conducting a successful initial interview with an actual client. This article uses ethnographic conversation analysis to describe the interview in terms of question form, interruptions, control of the floor, and expressions of empathy. It relies upon the insights from prior …

Status And Prospects For The Wisconsin Dairy Goat Sector, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith Jan 2010

Status And Prospects For The Wisconsin Dairy Goat Sector, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The Wisconsin dairy goat industry is a diverse, vibrant and robust sector that has grown rapidly over the last decade. Goat milk output has increased several-fold in the last ten years, and retail markets for goat cheese appear to be increasing at double-digit annual rates. The most recent data shows just over 200 licensed farms in Wisconsin in 2009. According to 2006 numbers, Wisconsin dairy goat farms were milking an average of 118 does that produced 1,416 lbs. On average, Wisconsin dairy goat farms were both larger and more productive on a per animal basis than farms in any other …

Supply Chain Information And Relational Alignments: Mediators Of Edi On Firm Performance, Keah Choon Tan, Vijay R. Kannan, Chin-Chun Hsu, G. Keong Leong

Management Faculty Publications

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of inter-organization information exchange on supply chain information and relational alignment. Drawing on literature on information systems, supply chain management, and logistics, the paper aims to present a multidimensional framework for considering electronic data interchange (EDI) adoption in supplier management and its effect on information and relational alignment. Design/methodology/approach: Theories drawn from resource-dependent and transaction cost economics, and the resource-based view of the firm were used to establish hypotheses. Structural equation modeling using survey data of manufacturing firms was used to test the hypotheses and research model. Findings: Results …

Examining The Compatibility Between Forestry Incentive Programs In The Us And The Practice Of Sustainable Forest Management, Steven E. Daniels, Michael A. Kilgore, Michael G. Jacobsen, John L. Greene, Thomas J. Straka Jan 2010

Examining The Compatibility Between Forestry Incentive Programs In The Us And The Practice Of Sustainable Forest Management, Steven E. Daniels, Michael A. Kilgore, Michael G. Jacobsen, John L. Greene, Thomas J. Straka

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

This research explores the intersection between the various federal and state forestry incentive programs and the adoption of sustainable forestry practices on non-industrial private forest (NIPF) lands in the US. The qualitative research reported here draws upon a series of eight focus groups of NIPF landowners (two each in Minnesota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina). Despite minor regional variations, the dominant theme that emerged is that these landowners’ purchase and management decisions are motivated by the “trilogy” of forest continuity, benefit to the owner, and doing the “right thing.” This trilogy is quite consistent with notions of sustainable forestry, but …

White-Tailed Deer Antler Research: A Response To Demarais And Strickland, Ben Koerth, James Kroll Jan 2010

White-Tailed Deer Antler Research: A Response To Demarais And Strickland, Ben Koerth, James Kroll

Faculty Publications

Demarais and Strickland presented several questions about the scope and validity of conclusions regarding predictability of mature antler size based on yearling antler size and produced a simulation model reported to demonstrate measurement bias in our 2008 study. We believe our conclusions were appropriate with our research hypothesis and demonstrated the assumed differential selection bias by hunters used in Demarais and Strickland was unwarranted. Demarais and Strickland provided no metadata to document the provenance of data used in their model and did not account for location, year, cohort, nutrition of research animals, or loss of individuals from their sample population …

Parental Leadership: The Mary Poppins Metaphor, Brad Van Alstyne Jan 2010

Parental Leadership: The Mary Poppins Metaphor, Brad Van Alstyne

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Existing theories on leadership are usually based on efforts we are familiar with in which leaders are easily defined (work, war, sports, etc). Little analysis to date has been placed on the role of parents as leaders outside of the social sciences where the focus of the research is usually an offshoot of psychology or childhood development. The parent as leader is a unique focus in that there are several qualities of the parent role that are quite different from that of the typical supervisory roles we normally discuss, while at the same time it would be foolish to think …

PSC Discussion Papers Series

Aboriginal Practitioners Speak Out: Contextualising Child Protection Interventions, Dawn Bessarab, Frances Crawford Jan 2010

Aboriginal Practitioners Speak Out: Contextualising Child Protection Interventions, Dawn Bessarab, Frances Crawford

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

One month before the June 2007 Federal Government Emergency Intervention in the Northern Territory some 55 West Australian Aboriginal child protection workers attended a 3-day summit in Fremantle. Their purpose as front-line practitioners from across the State was to identify how more nurturing and healing communities could be developed and supported in a climate of despair. This paper reports on how the summit was designed and on some of the ideas and concerns that emerged within this dialogical space of cooperative inquiry. The project was a partnership between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal representatives of university, government, and community-service bodies. Aboriginal practitioners …

Disability, Masculinities And Teaching: An Autoethnography, David J. Mara Jan 2010

Disability, Masculinities And Teaching: An Autoethnography, David J. Mara

Digitized Theses

This autoethnography focuses on issues of masculinity, disability and

education. Drawing on the work of Connell (2005) who offers an important theorization of masculinities and on the work of Shakespeare (1999) who elaborates a critical sociological perspective on disability studies the study challenges some o f the common-sense assumptions about male teachers. Namely, men are needed to solve the problem of failing and disaffected boys. The author draws upon his own narratives as a teacher and as a disabled man living with a spinal cord injury to interrogate such assumptions, and to illustrate a more complex and nuanced lived experience. …

‘Criminals Are Inside Of Our Homes’: Two Models Of The Relationship Between Perceived Neighbourhood Crime Rate And Intimate Partner Violence, Ryan R. Broll Jan 2010

‘Criminals Are Inside Of Our Homes’: Two Models Of The Relationship Between Perceived Neighbourhood Crime Rate And Intimate Partner Violence, Ryan R. Broll

Digitized Theses

This thesis examines two models of relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV) and perceptions of neighbourhood crime rates. In the first model, I seek to understand why some incidents of IPV are followed by revictimisation after police intervention; in the second model, I seek to understand why some people believe that they live in a higher crime neighbourhood. More specifically, however, I examine whether living in a higher crime neighbourhood increases one’s risk for IPV revictimisation and, alternatively, whether IPV victimisation increases one’s perception of his or her neighbourhood crime rate. Probit regression, Heckman selection probit regression, and logistic regression …

Inequality In Natural Health Product Use: The Canadian Regulatory Regime, Elisabeth C.L. Bartlett Jan 2010

Inequality In Natural Health Product Use: The Canadian Regulatory Regime, Elisabeth C.L. Bartlett

Digitized Theses

Recent changes to the regulation of natural health products (NHPs) - a type of complementary and alternative medicine - have led to questions about inequality in the use of these products. Limited research identifies inequality in use, but primarily interprets this as a product of cultural/behavioural factors. This thesis approaches the issue of NHP use from the perspective of fundamental cause theory. It focuses on understanding the extent to which the material/structural factors that contribute to health inequalities more generally influence NHP use. Using data from the Canadian National Population Health Survey, the relationships between NHP use and social determinants …

Migrating Against All The Odds: International Labour Migration Of Women From Bangladesh In Asian Context, Mahmuda Rahman Jan 2010

Migrating Against All The Odds: International Labour Migration Of Women From Bangladesh In Asian Context, Mahmuda Rahman

Digitized Theses

This thesis contributes to the body of evidence documenting how the migration of women entails gendered patterns of experiences. Based on 23 in-depth interviews conducted in 2009 with former migrant workers from Bangladesh who worked as domestic workers in the Gulf region, this study investigates interviewees’ experiences during the premigration period, while abroad and upon their return. The study documents how structural barriers and socio-cultural contexts of the sending and receiving countries shape study participants’ experiences. Despite barriers and challenges, our study participants displayed strong will and agency and negotiated patriarchal relations through the migration process. While migration may increase …

Parametric Frailty Models For Clustered Data With Arbitrary Censoring: Application To Effect Of Male Circumcision On Hpv Clearance, Xiangrong Kong, Kellie Archer, Lawrence H. Moulton, Ronald H. Gray, Mei-Cheng Wang

Biostatistics Publications

Background

In epidemiological studies, subjects are often followed for a period during which study outcomes are measured at selected time points, such as by diagnostic testing performed on biological samples collected at each visit. Although test results may indicate the presence or absence of a disease or condition, they cannot provide information on when exactly it occurred. Such study designs generate arbitrarily censored time-to-event data, which can include left, interval and right censoring. Adding to this complexity, the data may be clustered such that observations within the same cluster are not independent, such as time to recovery of an infectious …
