Where Have All The Utopias Gone? Ritual, Solidarity, And Longevity In A Multifaith Commune In New Mexico, Linda Prueitt Hansen
Where Have All The Utopias Gone? Ritual, Solidarity, And Longevity In A Multifaith Commune In New Mexico, Linda Prueitt Hansen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Utopian experiments creating new forms of community have dotted the globe throughout human history. Despite grandiose visions, a majority of communal experiments have faded quickly into oblivion. A wealth of scholarship has focused on reasons why communes typically fail. My research of an ecumenical commune in northern New Mexico examines what has facilitated its perpetuation for over 42 years. I participated in this community for different periods of time for over three years. With the assistance of a resident oral historian, I was able to expand my study into a diachronic view that spanned decades. I conclude that there are …

30 Years Of Foreign Direct Investment To China: An Interdisciplinary Literature Review, Marc Fetscherin, Hinrich Voss, Philippe Gugler
Faculty Publications
The purpose of this paper is to examine how scholarly research on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to the People’s Republic of China has evolved and been shaped using bibliometrics analysis of 422 journal articles published in 151 journals between 1979 and 2008 on that topic. The literature is dominated by the fields of Economics, followed by Business and Management, Planning and Development and International Relations, which together account for 95% of all publications. Ten percent of the most productive journals are responsible for 40% of all publications and 63% of all citations received. By means of citation mapping, four main …
2010 Needs Assessment Of Cal Poly Recreational Sports And Programs For Students With Mobility Impairment, Jesseca K. Files
2010 Needs Assessment Of Cal Poly Recreational Sports And Programs For Students With Mobility Impairment, Jesseca K. Files
Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration
In 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed, prohibiting discrimination against individuals with disablements. In 1992, Cal Poly redesigned its Recreation Center to make it accessible for all students. However, few programs exist for this population. The purpose of the study was to conduct a needs assessment of Cal Poly recreational sports and programs for students with mobility impairments. In the spring of 2010, a survey was administered and analyzed. Participants indicated their desire to recreate in both inclusive and segregated settings, programs they prefer, and their lack of knowledge about currently offered programs (Activity4All). The findings can be …
A Communicative Approach To Understanding Intergenerational Conflict Over Child Rearing, Lauren Marie Upton
A Communicative Approach To Understanding Intergenerational Conflict Over Child Rearing, Lauren Marie Upton
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
This research focuses on understanding intergenerational conflict over child rearing from a communicative perspective. The theoretical lens of relational dialectics was used to study opposing forces that exist between grandparents and parents. Through 12 semi-structured interviews with parents of children under the age of 12, parents shared experiences of intergenerational tension about child rearing. The results reveal three main dialectics of intergenerational conflict over child rearing; openness and closedness, involvement and indifference and a dominating existence of old and new. Understanding how parents manage the communicative relationships with grandparents is an integral part of parenting and contributes to maintaining a …

Immigration and otherness represent core concerns in contemporary society and, as such, give rise to debate and discussion in many disciplines. the question of otherness also arises as a recurrent and key subject in the field of literature. Tahar Ben Jelloun’s novel Partir is replete with the ambivalence of otherness: attraction/aversion; difference/similarity; lack/exile; native/foreigner; close/distant; normal/deviant and as such provides a laboratory where the expression of otherness in discourse can be dissected. We will examine the perception and the issue of otherness in the novel as well as the strength of its representations.

Integrating A Social Justice Perspective In Economics Education: Creating A Distinctly Catholic Education, David F. Carrithers, Dean Peterson
Integrating A Social Justice Perspective In Economics Education: Creating A Distinctly Catholic Education, David F. Carrithers, Dean Peterson
Journal of Catholic Education
This paper suggests a way of creating a distinctly Catholic economics education by integrating a social justice perspective into the curriculum through writings from Catholic Social Thought (CST). In so doing, we argue that students of economics will gain a more thorough understanding of the economics discipline. Moreover, a grounding in CST will help business and economics students better negotiate the conflicting view of markets they encounter in the “disconnect” between business courses and humanities/social science core courses. The thesis of the paper is that CST can be a useful mechanism by which to instill a social justice perspective in …

The Ah Beng Subculture: A Popular View, Suet Kay Chan
The Ah Beng Subculture: A Popular View, Suet Kay Chan
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
There is a trend among Malaysians in using the Hokkien term ‘Ah Beng’, in describing unsophisticated people. ‘Ah Beng’ means quite simply, a ‘country bumpkin’. However, there has not been any academic studies on the subject in Malaysia, whereas popular media tout it as a cultural icon. There are some issues related to the use of this term – for example, do people readily identify themselves as ‘Ah Beng/Ah Lian’ or is it a pejorative term? Furthermore, among Malaysian Chinese there is a divide between the English-speaking and Chinese-speaking groups. Do the English speaking groups deliberately conjure up a term …

Racial Disparities In Sentencing: Implications For The Criminal Justice System And The African American Community, Ngozi Caleb Kamalu, Margery Coulson-Clark, Nkechi Margaret Kamalu
African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies
This paper analyzes the consequences of discriminatory sentencing on the African American community. The intent is to review factors that contribute to the over-representation of African Americans in the prison system and to analyze the way that the judicial system maintains these disparate numbers through practices and procedures, racial profiling, historical biases and quasi legal procedures sanctioned by the mainstream process under the guise of law and order. Review of the literature, extensive meta- analysis and statistics confirms and support the statistics presented and the finding provided. The results of these harsh and disparate sentencing are resulting in the weakening and …

Planning For Demographic Diversity: The Case Of Immigrants And Public Transit, Evelyn Blumenberg, Alexandra Elizabeth Evans
Journal of Public Transportation
This research examines the significant effects of immigration on transit use. Drawing on data from the U.S. Census, we examine how the enormous influx of immigrants to California has altered the demographics of transit commuting in the state and contributed importantly to a growth in transit ridership. California immigrants commute by public transit at twice the rate of native-born commuters, comprise nearly 50 percent of all transit commuters in the state, and are responsible for much of the growth in transit commuting in the state. But over time, immigrants’ reliance on transit declines. Transit managers would be well advised to …
The Relationship Between Quality Of Life And Leed-Nd Certified / Certifiable Neighborhoods, Stephanie Nicole Timm
The Relationship Between Quality Of Life And Leed-Nd Certified / Certifiable Neighborhoods, Stephanie Nicole Timm
Master's Theses
The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) has developed a rating system that examines the sustainability of neighborhoods. They have specifically stated that that LEED-ND certified neighborhoods will protect and enhance residents’ overall health, the natural environment, and quality of life. This study uses relevant quality of life indicators that are commonly identified by social scientists as accurate interpreters of the various quality of life domains to determine if there is, in fact, a relationship between LEED-ND and quality of life. Four of the ten domains examined were found to be related to LEED-ND certified/certifiable neighborhoods, thus, to a certain …
