Values Of Females And Males In The East And West: Are They Similar Or Different?, Arnel Onesimo O. Uy, Edward F. Murphy, Regina A. Greenwood Jul 2010

Values Of Females And Males In The East And West: Are They Similar Or Different?, Arnel Onesimo O. Uy, Edward F. Murphy, Regina A. Greenwood

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Understanding whether cross-cultural values are similar or different has become more important in an increasingly global marketplace. Yet, few studies have explored cross-cultural sex-based value structures. This study examines the values of 5,134 male and female working adults in three Eastern nations (Japan, the Philippines, and Thailand) and three Western nations (United States, United Kingdom, and Iceland). For similarities, males and females more highly valued personal than social terminal values. For differences, males in the East more highly valued self-actualization/competence instrumental values. Females in both geographic groups placed higher importance on social terminal values than did males, supporting prior research.

Why Farm The City? Theorizing Urban Agriculture Through A Lens Of Metabolic Rift, Nathan Mcclintock Jul 2010

Why Farm The City? Theorizing Urban Agriculture Through A Lens Of Metabolic Rift, Nathan Mcclintock

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Urban agriculture (UA) is spreading across vacant and marginal land worldwide, embraced by government and civil society as source of food, ecosystems services and jobs, particularly in times of economic crisis. ‘Metabolic rift' is an effective framework for differentiating UA's multiple origins and functions across the Global North and South. I examine how UA arises from three interrelated dimensions of metabolic rift—ecological, social and individual. By rescaling production, reclaiming vacant land and ‘de-alienating’ urban dwellers from their food, UA also attempts to overcome these forms of rift. Considering all three dimensions is valuable both for theory and practice.

A Critical Reflection On Advanced Practice Nursing, Patricia Quinn Phd

Dissertations

Legitimation of the Nurse Practitioner (NP) and advanced practice nursing is explored using the framework of critical theory and the case study methodology of Yin. Three different cases are analyzed using classic themes of critical theory - oppression, alienation and ideology and false consciousness. Three publishable articles comprise this portfolio. First is "Looking for love (legitimation) in all the wrong places - A critique of Nurse Practitioner effectiveness literature". This article reviews the literature of NP effectiveness and offers an analysis of the failures and problems of these positivistic studies. Article two is "At least some of us are still …

Rural Life Census Data Center Newsletter: South Dakota’S Medically Uninsured, Jake Cummings

Census Data Center Newsletter Archive: 2007-2010

The status of our nation’s healthcare system has received a considerable amount of attention, particularly over the past two years. One of the most commonly cited areas of concern among stakeholders, such as the Kaiser Foundation, is the number of uninsured individuals nationwide.
In 2008, the Kaiser Family Foundation stated that the percentage of employers providing health insurance decreased from 69% to 60% (The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation 2008). Kaiser cited increasing premiums as a primary cause of health coverage being dropped. The Kaiser Foundation added that the uninsured “are four times more likely to delay or forgo needed …

Mothering Fundamentalism: The Transformation Of Modern Women Into Fundamentalists, Sophia Korb Jul 2010

Mothering Fundamentalism: The Transformation Of Modern Women Into Fundamentalists, Sophia Korb

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Despite upbringings influenced by modern feminism, many women choose to identify

with new communities in the modern religious revivalist movement in the United States

who claim to represent and embrace the patriarchal values against which their mothers

and grandmothers fought. Because women’s mothering is determinative to the family, it is

therefore central to transforming larger social structures. This literature review is taken from

a study which employed a qualitative design incorporating thematic analysis of interviews

to explore how women’s attitudes about being a mother and mothering change when they

change religious communities from liberal paradigms to fundamentalist, enclavist belief

systems. …

Responsibility In Negligence: Why The Duty Of Care Is Not A Duty “To Try”, Ori J. Herstein Jul 2010

Responsibility In Negligence: Why The Duty Of Care Is Not A Duty “To Try”, Ori J. Herstein

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Even though it offers a compelling account of the responsibility-component in the negligence standard—arguably the Holy Grail of negligence theory—it is a mistake to conceive of the duty of care in negligence as a duty to try to avert harm. My goal here is to explain why and to point to an alternative account of the responsibility-component in negligence.

The flaws in conceiving of the duty of care as a duty to try are: failing to comport with the legal doctrine of negligence and failing as a revisionary account for the law; overly burdening autonomy and restricting the liberty of …

Constructing The Shitting Citizen, Deanna Grant-Smith

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Art activism uses visual and performance art to promote social and environmental agendas. In this paper, I explore attempts to raise awareness of sanitation issues at the global, local and personal level using scatological art. I focus on the successes of the open-air public art exhibition set up in the Brisbane (Queensland, Australia) central business district to celebrate World Toilet Day in 2008. The art in this exhibition featured included one hundred toilets decorated to raise awareness of global sanitation issues and the distribution of promotional materials featuring scatological images including postcards and stickers. From Slacker To Revolutionary: Generation X And The Rise Of The Global Justice Movement, Benjamin Balthaser Jul 2010

From Slacker To Revolutionary: Generation X And The Rise Of The Global Justice Movement, Benjamin Balthaser

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Over a year now since Barack Obama ascended the stage with a politics of sincerity, many progressives are beginning to suspect that our motivational speaker-in-chief may have awakened the wrong giant within. Plagued with mobs from the UFO-wing of the Aryan Nation, Obama's genial retreat from principle has occasioned a great deal of hand-wringing, but little historical introspection regarding the movements of the previous decade. Part of this absence is a problem of definition. "Generation X" by its very name marks a non-event, something without a self-generative name. To make matters worse, if Generation X were ever useful …

Guillermo Gómez-Peña: A "New Age Shaman" In A Bohemian Theme Park, Gretchen Coombs Jul 2010

Guillermo Gómez-Peña: A "New Age Shaman" In A Bohemian Theme Park, Gretchen Coombs

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The Marquis de Sade was declared, “the fist commandment of art is ‘never to bore,’” and perhaps no other artist of his generation has embodied this sentiment more than Guillermo Gómez-Peña, the Mexican-born performance artist and cultural theorist living in San Francisco. Since the early 1980s Gómez-Peña, along with his performance troupe La Pocha Nostra, have been engaged in “reverse anthropology” staging “postcolonial” performances that foreground race and intervene in our cultural fears and desires by focusing on our obsession with the exotic. He deftly navigates the “post-multicultural” world – accelerated by globalization and nation branding – by …

Politicising Queer Issues And Activism: Disciplinarity, Biopolitics And The Means By Which Activist Issues Enter The Public Sphere, Rob Cover

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This paper explores ways of understanding how an activist 'issue' is politicised by examining and analysing lesbian/gay and queer community politics. The paper focuses on the contrast between (1) the wyas in which queer political activism has taken up and politicised the issue of same-sex marriage rights as one of seeking equality and foregrounded as the queer issue of the 2000s; and (2) the issue of queer youth suicide and self-harm which is arguably one of the most under-represented yet ethically most urgent issues within GLBT discourse carrying greater risk and impact on the most marginal and least visible of …
