Exploring The Adaptive Function In Complexity Leadership Theory: An Examination Of Shared Leadership And Collective Creativity In Innovation Networks, David S. Sweetman Dec 2010

Exploring The Adaptive Function In Complexity Leadership Theory: An Examination Of Shared Leadership And Collective Creativity In Innovation Networks, David S. Sweetman

College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Leadership, creativity, and innovation are becoming increasingly important to the sustainability of organizations. Facing ever more complex environments, traditional views embodied in the individual are being augmented by theorizing which views leadership and creativity as a property of the collective. With theoretical grounding in complexity leadership theory, this dissertation leverages the emerging constructs of shared leadership and collective creativity from a network perspective to provide empirical understanding of the adaptive function of complexity leadership. Social network hypotheses were advanced positing that shared leadership and collective creativity comprise the adaptive function, and that the adaptive function is related to innovation. Results …

A Case Study Of The Impact Of Filmmaker Decisions In The Construction Of A Documentary: Helen Whitney's (2007) The Mormons, Elizabeth Joy Mott Dec 2010

A Case Study Of The Impact Of Filmmaker Decisions In The Construction Of A Documentary: Helen Whitney's (2007) The Mormons, Elizabeth Joy Mott

Theses and Dissertations

Informed by theories of media framing, exemplification, and non-fiction film production, this case study used as its sample for textual analysis the typed transcripts from the final cut of Helen Whitney's (2007) documentary film, The Mormons, and the interview transcripts of the 15 key commentators interviewed for the documentary. These theories suggest that (a) media producers condense topics in the media by selecting information that connects news stories to a larger context and imbues them with symbolic value; (b) verbal and visual examples have been shown to be more easily retrieved in memory than abstract ideas and are consequently …

Quintessential Acts Of Inquiry In Educational Practice: Delineating Inquiry And Interpretation In The Pursuit Of Teacher Professionalization, Ted Purinton Dec 2010

Quintessential Acts Of Inquiry In Educational Practice: Delineating Inquiry And Interpretation In The Pursuit Of Teacher Professionalization, Ted Purinton

i.e.: inquiry in education

Sociological and political theories on the professions indicate that established professions utilize unique forms of inquiry and interpretation to guide practice. This essay argues that for teaching to become professionalized, unique forms of inquiry and interpretation need to be emphasized. Utilizing the concept of professional jurisdiction, the essay argues that other professions' forms of inquiry, while not detrimental to the purpose of teacher professionalization, do not establish the distinctive skills upon which teachers can lay claim.

The Concept Of Value In Design Practice - An Interview Study, Katarina Wetter Edman Dec 2010

The Concept Of Value In Design Practice - An Interview Study, Katarina Wetter Edman

ServDes Conference Series

Use and the value thereof are implicit in the design discourse and therefore rarely explicitly spoken of; although they are at the core of design practice. With the recent turn to a service dominant logic perspective; the service marketing discourse opens up for understanding value as value-in-use and value-in-context. This paper empirically explores and describes ways in which professional designers themselves express “value-in-use”. The findings suggest that professional designers do not focus explicitly on value as a standalone concept; but conceptualize value-in-use through contextualization and an extensive use of emotions.

Adapting Service Design Tools To Facilitate Interdisciplinary Research Collaborations, G. Teal, A. S. Macdonald, P. J. Moynihan Dec 2010

Adapting Service Design Tools To Facilitate Interdisciplinary Research Collaborations, G. Teal, A. S. Macdonald, P. J. Moynihan

ServDes Conference Series

This paper describes an ongoing multidisciplinary research project which is developing and prototyping a new food service for older hospital patients. This is a multi-faceted project combining the skills of designers; food sensory scientists; dietitians; medical sociologists; ergonomists and technologists with a diverse group of end users and stakeholders to map the existing food service and identify opportunities for re-design. This paper describes how three design methods/tools conventionally used by designers have been adapted and used to collaborate with colleagues from different non-design disciplines.

The Design Value Of Business, Stefan Holmlid Dec 2010

The Design Value Of Business, Stefan Holmlid

ServDes Conference Series

In this small essay I will explore the notion of the design value of business. Interpreted as merely a play with words; such a statement may be regarded as a bearer of little value. But; taken as seriously as the more common question; what the business value of design is; it turns into a critical examination of basic conceptions of what design is for. It also paves the way for the critical claim that design value precedes business value.

Framing Climate Policy Debates: Science, Network, And U.S. Congress, 1976-2007, Hyung Sam Park, Xinsheng Liu, Arnold Vedlitz

2010

Debates on global climate change (GCC) have been heavily influenced by such factors as scientific evidence, media coverage, public concerns, partisan interest, and so forth. Focusing on the linkages among the congressional committees, hearings, and invited witnesses (and their sectors), this study investigates the relational conditions under which congressional committees have mobilized climate expertise to discuss climate change issues for the past decades in U.S. Congress. Our findings show that agenda setting and witness selection by the committees significantly differed across the party lines: more environmental scientists were invited to define GCC as a threat in Democratic Congresses, whereas industrial …

Determinants Of Health Of Migrant Farm Workers In Canada, Janet Mclaughlin

International Migration Research Centre

Despite wide indications that migrant farm workers (MFWs) comprise a particularly vulnerable subset of the temporary foreign worker population, relatively little attention has been paid to their health issues. This article describes major health concerns among MFWs in Canada, reviews the social determinants of health of particular importance to this population, and notes research and policy implications. Findings are drawn primarily from two recent literature reviews conducted for the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Posttraumatic Stress Among Young Urban Children Exposed To Family Violence And Other Potentially Traumatic Events, Cindy A. Crusto, Melissa L. Whitson, Sherry M. Walling, Richard Feinn, Stacey R. Friedman, Jesse Reynolds, Mona Amer, Joy S. Kaufman

Psychology Faculty Publications

This study examines the relationship between the number of types of traumatic events experienced by children 3 to 6 years old, parenting stress, and children's posttraumatic stress (PTS). Parents and caregivers provided data for 154 urban children admitted into community-based mental health or developmental services. By parent and caregiver report, children experienced an average of 4.9 different types of potentially traumatic events. Nearly one quarter of the children evidenced clinically significant PTS. Posttraumatic stress was positively and significantly related to family violence and other family-related trauma exposure, nonfamily violence and trauma exposure, and parenting stress. Additionally, parenting stress partially mediated …
