Community Engaged Research At The Regional Research Institute For Human Services, Diane Yatchmenoff, Laurie E. Powers
Community Engaged Research At The Regional Research Institute For Human Services, Diane Yatchmenoff, Laurie E. Powers
Regional Research Institute for Human Services
Participatory models of research, in which communities are actively engaged in the research process through partnerships with academic institutions, are restructuring how scientific knowledge is being created. Community engaged research, also known as, community based participatory research (CBPR), and participatory action research (PAR) is increasingly recognized as a framework for high quality scientific inquiry. In community engaged research, researchers and evaluators work side‐by‐side with community members in all phases of the research process, from defining social problems and research questions, conceptualizing research design, carrying out research, and interpreting and disseminating findings. It requires partnership development, collaboration and cooperation, and commitment …

Trust And Boundaries In Three Small Group Communities: Urban Knitting Groups And The Construction Of Small Group Exclusivity, Erin N. Tracey
Trust And Boundaries In Three Small Group Communities: Urban Knitting Groups And The Construction Of Small Group Exclusivity, Erin N. Tracey
Theses (2 year embargo)
The existing small groups literature most often uses the small group as a way in which to study issues such as race, religion, and education rather than examining the ways in which the study of small groups provides a deeper understanding of larger social structures (Harrington and Fine 2000:314). I used participant observation in three urban knitting groups over approximately eight months and interviews with fifteen group members in total from each of the three groups to determine how entrée is achieved and boundaries are constructed in small group communities. Each group was unique in neighborhood location, the day and …
The Scientific Model Of Jurisprudence, Dan Priel
The Scientific Model Of Jurisprudence, Dan Priel
All Papers
I argue in this essay that the popular “descriptive” approach to jurisprudence can be modeled after attempts at explaining natural phenomena by scientists. I present four assumptions that are underlying this approach to jurisprudence, which are similar to those of natural scientists. I then argue, however, that in the case of jurisprudence (and unlike the natural sciences) these assumptions contradict each other. After presenting my case I respond to several potential replies to my argument. If my arguments are correct, this shows that jurisprudential descriptivism is not just, as some have argued, unimportant, but rather that it is impossible. The …

Elegant Leadership In Heterogeneous Ministry Settings, Karen Louise Palmbaum Claassen
Elegant Leadership In Heterogeneous Ministry Settings, Karen Louise Palmbaum Claassen
Doctor of Ministry
Most Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) congregations are heterogeneous when viewed from some demographic angles. Age, economic status, theological viewpoint, ethnicity, language, family structure, and culture all provide angles through which to contemplate demographic heterogeneity. Part of the variety within my denomination occurs naturally. Other is due to changes in our society. Regardless of origin, increasing diversity is likely to continue. While some argue that uniformity in one or two overarching categories means that a congregation is not diverse, I affim1 that acknowledging diversity points, and exploiting those differences at times, is critical to health and vitality in a congregation. This dissertation …

A Critique Of The Historiographical Construal Of America As A Christian Nation, John David Wilsey
A Critique Of The Historiographical Construal Of America As A Christian Nation, John David Wilsey
SOR Faculty Publications and Presentations
The Christian America thesis has grown in popularity over the past thirty years. This essay will critique the Christian America thesis, and instead offer the assertion that America was founded as a nation with religious liberty. Six lines of critique of the Christian America thesis will be presented, and the essay will attempt to show the significance of religious freedom in the founding. America‘s history points to a mixture of sacred and secular ideas. The nation is defined more realistically by religious freedom rather than a Christian identity. Evangelicals can approach those who do not share their faith commitment in …
