Learning Styles: Learning That Empowers Students?, Tofi Rahal
Learning Styles: Learning That Empowers Students?, Tofi Rahal
All Works
Despite much disagreement, educators and psychologists agree that different students learn differently. Learning differences come under many labels, such as 'learning styles', 'thinking styles', 'personality types' or 'multiple intelligences'. This paper supports the use of learning style models as a theoretical framework for quality educational development in the Arab Gulf Countries. It will (a) briefly explore various learning styles models, with primary focus on the Dunn & Dunn model and its assessment instruments; (b) review key research conducted internationally, as well as locally at Zayed University; (c) examine the benefits of using multimodal and multisensory instructional packages in various disciplines; …

Background: Chronic disease accounts for nearly three-quarters of US deaths, yet prevalence rates are not consistently reported at the state level and are not available at the sub-state level. This makes it difficult to assess trends in prevalence and impossible to measure sub-state differences. Such county-level differences could inform and direct the delivery of health services to those with the greatest need. Methods: We used a database of prescription drugs filled in the US as a proxy for nationwide, county-level prevalence of three top causes of death: heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. We tested whether prescription data are statistically valid proxy …
Developing A Conceptual Model Of Virtual Organizations For Citizen Science, Andrea Wiggins, Kevin Crowston
Developing A Conceptual Model Of Virtual Organizations For Citizen Science, Andrea Wiggins, Kevin Crowston
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications
This paper develops an organisation design-oriented conceptual model of scientific knowledge production through citizen science virtual organisations. Citizen science is a form of organisation design for collaborative scientific research involving scientists and volunteers, for which internet-based modes of participation enable massive virtual collaboration by thousands of members of the public. The conceptual model provides an example of a theory development process and discusses its application to an exploratory study. The paper contributes a multi-level process model for organising investigation into the impact of design on this form of scientific knowledge production.

The Relationship Between Pretend Play And Cognitive, Linguistic, And Social Skills Development In Early Childhood : A Project Based Upon Secondary Analysis Of Developmental Screening Data From An Elementary School In Plainfield, Connecticut, Lauren Ann Sebastianelli
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
There is substantial research to support the positive correlation between pretend play and cognitive, language and social skills development in early childhood. Most of this research has explored bivariate relationships. We know little about how these variables might co-vary in the same sample. This exploratory study was based on secondary analysis of developmental screening data for a preschool program in Connecticut. The sample was comprised of 79 three and four year-olds. Proxies for pretend play and cognitive, language and social skills development were operationalized from a standardized instrument, Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning (DIAL) and a Social Skills …
Are Academics Messy? Testing The Broken Windows Theory With A Field Experiment In The Work Environment, João Ramos, Benno Torgler
Are Academics Messy? Testing The Broken Windows Theory With A Field Experiment In The Work Environment, João Ramos, Benno Torgler
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
We study the broken windows theory with a field experiment in a shared area of a workplace in academia (department common room). We explore academics’ and postgraduate students’ behaviour under an order condition (clean environment) and a disorder condition (messy environment). We find strong support that signs of disorderly behaviour triggers littering. In the disorder treatment 59% of the subjects litter compared to 18% in the order condition. The results remain robust when controlling compared to previous studies for a large set of factors in a multivariate analysis. When academic staff members and postgraduate students observe that others violated the …

Selective Self-Categorization: Meaningful Categorization And The In-Group Persuasion Effect, Na Wyer
Selective Self-Categorization: Meaningful Categorization And The In-Group Persuasion Effect, Na Wyer
School of Psychology
Research stemming from self-categorization theory (Turner et al., 1987) has demonstrated that individuals are typically more persuaded by messages from their in-group than by messages from the out-group. The present research investigated the role of issue relevance in moderating these effects. In particular, it was predicted that in-groups would only be more persuasive when the dimension on which group membership was defined was meaningful or relevant to the attitude issue. In two studies, participants were presented with persuasive arguments from either an in-group source or an out-group source, where the basis of the in-group/out-group distinction was either relevant or irrelevant …

"No End Or Return" : Thematics Of Impasse : A Relational And Infancy-Based Inquiry : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Teresa M. MéNdez
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical study explores therapeutic impasse through the dual lens of relational theory and infant research. Particular attention is paid to the role that enactment, rupture and repair, and non-verbal communication play in impasse dynamics. Defined broadly--as any time a therapist and patient feel stuck--impasse is conceptualized as an expectable, even inevitable, component of the treatment relationship. This paper further posits that small moments of impasse hold potential for growth. Finally, the implications for navigating impasse are considered through a clinical vignette.
An Exploration Of Psychopathy Amongst Juvenile Sex Offenders, Laura Margaret Morrell
An Exploration Of Psychopathy Amongst Juvenile Sex Offenders, Laura Margaret Morrell
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Despite the growing body of knowledge regarding psychopathy among adolescent sex offenders, additional research is still necessary. In this study I examine four measures of juvenile psychopathy (Childhood Psychopathy Scale, Antisocial Process Screening Device, Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory, and Inventory of Callous and Unemotional Traits) in a sample of 191 incarcerated adolescent sex offenders located in juvenile detention facilities in a Midwestern state. I examine how the diverse scales relate to characteristics of sexual aggression and non-sexual criminality, and which scale specifically has the best predictive validity for sexual as well as non-sexual crime. Of the four instruments and nine …

The Matthew Effect And Treatment Selection For Urban Poor Clients : Social Pain, Countertransference Or Competition? : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Launa Kay Bodde
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study is a theoretical look at the intersection of neurobiology and analytic theory as it impacts clinician's decisions about treatment selection. Historically, it has been proven that clients who are poor do not receive the same level of care, attention and service as clients from "upper classes." These poorer clients do not have the same ability to compete for resources, therefore the rich get richer while the poor get poorer. This phenomena has been coined the Matthew Effect. This study is an attempt to find new and different ways of explaining the Matthew Effect phenomenon. What exactly are the …

Attitudes Of Mental Health Professionals Toward Mental Illness : Comparisons And Predictors : A Project Based Upon An Investigation At Department Of Youth Services, Massachusetts, David Townsend Browne
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This quantitative descriptive study examines the differences in attitudes toward mental illness and the mentally ill between different groups of mental health workers by asking the following questions: Do mental health workers with higher levels of education show lower levels of mental health stigma? Do mental health workers with more experience in the field show lower levels of mental health stigma? This study uses a data set collected with the help of David Browne and analyzed by Marjorie Postal of Smith College. The sample consists of 64 DYS staff who attended a Staff Appreciation Day and filled out a survey …
Human Development In Poor Countries: Bangladesh In Comparative Perspective, Nafisa Halim
Human Development In Poor Countries: Bangladesh In Comparative Perspective, Nafisa Halim
Sociology ETDs
My dissertation addresses the developmental paradox' of rapid gains in human development in Bangladesh against the backdrop of a social scientific literature that portrays two of the country's endemic features—Islam and illiberal politics—as inveterate obstacles to their achievement. I use data from household surveys conducted by the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies in collaboration with the World Bank in 1991-2 and 1998-9, and identify the distal determinants of the Bangladeshi mortality decline. I find female education has a linear effect and household income has a curvilinear effect on infant and child mortality. Why is the relationship between income and child …

To Prevent The Breakup Of The Indian Family: The Development Of The Indian Child Welfare Act Of 1978., Evelyn Lance Blanchard
American Studies ETDs
This dissertation is the story of the destruction of Indian families as told to Congress in hearings held by the Sub-Committee on Indian Affairs in 1974 and the Select Committee on Indian Affairs in 1977 through the testimony of children, parents, Indian leadership, the Association on American Indian Affairs, psychological witnesses, and other advocates who opposed destructive child welfare practices. Their testimony described the illegal removal of Indian children, the exploitation of families through violation of their due process rights, the tragedy of children who were abused and neglected in placement, the psychological damage suffered by the children and their …

The Importance Of Examining Movements Within The Us Health Caresystem: Sequential Logit Modeling, Chioun Lee, Stephanie L L. Ayers, Jennie Jacobs Kronenfeld, Jemima A. Frimpong, Patrick A. Rivers, Sam S. Kim
Dartmouth Scholarship
Utilization of specialty care may not be a discrete, isolated behavior but rather, a behavior of sequential movements within the health care system. Although patients may often visit their primary care physician and receive a referral before utilizing specialty care, prior studies have underestimated the importance of accounting for these sequential movements. The sample included 6,772 adults aged 18 years and older who participated in the 2001 Survey on Disparities in Quality of Care, sponsored by the Commonwealth Fund. A sequential logit model was used to account for movement in all stages of utilization: use of any health services (i.e., …
Re-Envisaging Erikson : Deconstructing Adoption Through The Case Of Claire : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Alison M. Armstrong
Re-Envisaging Erikson : Deconstructing Adoption Through The Case Of Claire : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Alison M. Armstrong
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical study explored the social construction of adoption present within North American discourse and how this has impacted subsequent theoretical understandings of adoptee development. This was done with a particular emphasis on Eriksonian theories of adoptee development. This study utilized a cultural artifact, namely the character of Claire in Tim Kring's (2006) television show, Heroes. Claire's case is then used to compare current uses of Eriksonian theories of psychosocial ego development with possible, more comprehensive iterations of Erikson's theory. The impact and relevance to social work theory, research and practice are discussed.
Polyamory As "Ethical Nonmonogamy" : A Viable Alternative To Infidelity : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Sarah Kay Woodruff-Diaz
Polyamory As "Ethical Nonmonogamy" : A Viable Alternative To Infidelity : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Sarah Kay Woodruff-Diaz
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This research examined the practice of polyamory as "ethical nonmonogamy" within the United States. Long-term dyadic monogamy (usually between a man and woman, and sanctioned through marriage) is the hegemonic index for how most Americans continue to experience and authenticate relationships. However, patterns of frequent infidelity and frequent divorce undermine the rectitude of monogamy's core institution. This study sought to determine whether polyamory could provide a viable alternative to traditional models of long-term dyadic monogamy. It also sought to determine the capacity of poly phenomenon to foster intrapsychic growth and development, and provide psychic repair in spite of (and because …
