When The Pot Plays Potter: “Isaiah”, Toy Story And Religious Socialization, Paul Tremblay
When The Pot Plays Potter: “Isaiah”, Toy Story And Religious Socialization, Paul Tremblay
Journal of Religion & Film
Biblical verses mentioning the “pot and the potter” entail a God/creation relationship in which the creation is warned not to turn against, or even criticize, the Creator; humankind is advised humility for fear of Yahweh’s punishment. This is a comparative study of three films with a strong emphasis on a children’s film, Toy Story (1995); the movies to be examined are treated as allegories of the concept of potter/pot lesson with a twist as the humans are playing God/potter. The movies geared more to an adult or mature audience (The Matrix [1999] and Terminator [1986]) feature the creation (robots) …

Dog Parks: An Application Of Place Attachment Theory, Andrew Pariser
Dog Parks: An Application Of Place Attachment Theory, Andrew Pariser
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
Despite their increasing popularity, dog parks have been subjected to little research. The purpose of this study was to determine if place attachment and its generally recognized sub-components of place dependence and place identity apply to dog parks. Survey respondents were given an on-site questionnaire at a Virginia and at a Florida dog park. Respondents answered questions similar to those used in previous studies of place attachment at other recreational facilities. There was a significant correlation between the constructs of place dependence and place identity and dog park usage. The combined construct of place attachment showed the highest correlation. Regression …

Review Of Taming The Land: The Lost Postcard Photographs Of The Texas High Plains By John Miller Morris, Anne E. Peterson
Review Of Taming The Land: The Lost Postcard Photographs Of The Texas High Plains By John Miller Morris, Anne E. Peterson
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The advent of the real photographic postcard (RPPC) and the burgeoning growth in the early twentieth century of the Texas Panhandle area of the southern Great Plains coincide. More than 100,000 "optimists" spilled into the region after 1906. The frontier receded as farmsteads grew around railroad towns. The era also witnessed a surge in popularity of the real photographic postcard from 1906 into the 1920s, mailed by the tens of thousands and collected in albums documenting the region. As the population grew, photographers increasingly worked for land developers making images of farmland and also of excursionists traveling to see the …

Factors Influencing Long-Term Population Dynamics Of Pronghorn (Antilocapra Americana): Evidence Of An Allee Effect, Justin D. Hoffman, Hugh H. Genoways, Rachel R. Jones
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Populations of pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) are subjected to multiple forms of density-dependent and density-independent regulation. Little is known about the combined effects of these variables across multiple populations throughout the landscape. The objectives of this study were to examine long-term trends in density and recruitment in pronghorn and to assess how different forms of regulation influence these trends. We used multiple density-dependent and density-independent explanatory variables in a model selection process to explain variation in pronghorn density and July fawn : doe ratios from 1955 to 1993 in 4 pronghorn management units in Nebraska. We also investigated levels …
From Conley To Twombly To Iqbal: A Double Play On The Federal Rules Of Civil Procedure, Arthur R. Miller
From Conley To Twombly To Iqbal: A Double Play On The Federal Rules Of Civil Procedure, Arthur R. Miller
Duke Law Journal
This Article discusses the effects of the recent Supreme Court decisions in Bell Atlantic Corp. v. Twombly and Ashcroft v. Iqbal on the model of civil litigation established by the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure in 1938. Those Rules created a procedural system giving a litigant, using plain language and presenting the essential elements of a claim for relief an opportunity to pursue discovery and have his or her rights adjudicated on the merits. This Article discusses the basic values underlying that system and its importance in promoting broad citizen access to our federal courts and enabling the private enforcement …

Mothers In Trouble: Coping With Actual Or Pending Separation From Children Due To Incarceration, Katarzyna Celinska, Jane A. Siegel
Mothers In Trouble: Coping With Actual Or Pending Separation From Children Due To Incarceration, Katarzyna Celinska, Jane A. Siegel
Publications and Research
Although female offenders are the fastest growing population in prison today, relatively few studies focus on their unique experiences as mothers. In this study, the authors utilize 74 semistructured interviews with mothers before trial and during incarceration to document coping strategies employed to deal with potential or actual separation from their children. From the study data, seven strategies emerge: being a good mother, mothering from prison, role redefinition, disassociation from prisoner identity, self-transformation, planning and preparation, and self-blame. The findings show that mothers used multiple strategies and tended to employ emotion-focused and adaptive coping techniques. The policy implications are discussed.
The Western Australian Charter Boat Industry: Working Towards Long-Term Sustainability, Carli Telfer
The Western Australian Charter Boat Industry: Working Towards Long-Term Sustainability, Carli Telfer
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Fisheries agencies and industry are accountable for sustainable fishing practises from all sectors. Throughout Australia, commercial and recreational sectors have been the focus of monitoring programmes and management, yet charter boat industries have been providing a service to fee-paying recreational clients for decades and only recently have the industry become part of those monitoring and management programs. Charter boat industries exhibit characteristics of both commercial and recreational fishing sectors, charter operators are paid for a service and managed under a licensing framework, but their clients adhere to a set of recreational fishing regulations. Unlike the other two sectors, limited catch, …
Enhancing Cluster Effects To Reduce Regional Labor-Supply Gaps: An Example In South Carolina, Lori A. Dickes, Kenneth L. Robinson
Enhancing Cluster Effects To Reduce Regional Labor-Supply Gaps: An Example In South Carolina, Lori A. Dickes, Kenneth L. Robinson
Journal of Extension
A series of regional focus groups and interviews reveal the practical economic development challenges that small and rural communities experience in an environment of globalization and industrial restructuring. The analysis reported here found that many economically distressed communities face immediate human capital and labor market concerns that may prevent the implementation of competitive economic development approaches. Unless these regions address these human capital constraints, they are at continued risk of falling further behind. They must begin with the development of programs and policies that build regional partnerships among local school districts, career centers, local businesses, and community colleges, and universities.

Wownet: A Communication And Networking Model For Women, Lauren E. Redmore, Joanne F. Tynon
Journal of Extension
We interviewed members of Women Owning Woodlands network (WOWnet), an Extension program in Western Oregon and an ideal community to study how women communicate and network. We found that WOWnet women are involved in a variety of natural resource-based organizations. However, WOWnet is unusual because of its small-group, praxis-based approach. If more Extension and forestry organizations followed the WOWnet example of supporting women new to forestry and focusing more on women-centric knowledge, they can become more inclusive of women with diverse interests and backgrounds. Programming that incorporates women-centric knowledge has implications for Extension programs throughout the U.S. and elsewhere.
Mining Interesting Link Formation Rules In Social Networks, Cane Wing-Ki Leung, Ee Peng Lim, David Lo, Jianshu Weng
Mining Interesting Link Formation Rules In Social Networks, Cane Wing-Ki Leung, Ee Peng Lim, David Lo, Jianshu Weng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Link structures are important patterns one looks out for when modeling and analyzing social networks. In this paper, we propose the task of mining interesting Link Formation rules (LF-rules) containing link structures known as Link Formation patterns (LF-patterns). LF-patterns capture various dyadic and/or triadic structures among groups of nodes, while LF-rules capture the formation of a new link from a focal node to another node as a postcondition of existing connections between the two nodes. We devise a novel LF-rule mining algorithm, known as LFR-Miner, based on frequent subgraph mining for our task. In addition to using a support-confidence framework …
Nutrition Education Program Assistants: A Leverage Point For Collecting Authentic Program Data, Mary Mcferren, Nancy Franz, Michael Lambur
Nutrition Education Program Assistants: A Leverage Point For Collecting Authentic Program Data, Mary Mcferren, Nancy Franz, Michael Lambur
Journal of Extension
Extension administrators and educators wonder why low-income audiences refrain from participating or underparticipate in educational opportunities. This may be due to a gap between administrator or educator views of program participation barriers versus the lived experience of low-income audiences. Virginia Cooperative Extension worked to bridge this gap in perspectives by using Nutrition Program Assistants as a leverage point for recruiting and gathering authentic data on program participation from low-income individuals. Even though program assistants rarely serve in this role, their connection with low-income clientele and groups that serve them is invaluable for gathering authentic program data.
“Not I” Said The Pig: Who Defends Intellectual Freedom For Librarians?, Jean-Mark Sens
“Not I” Said The Pig: Who Defends Intellectual Freedom For Librarians?, Jean-Mark Sens
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Although librarians have traditionally defended intellectual freedom, the American Library Association (ALA) tends to treat it as a local management issue. As librarianship has become increasingly technical defense of intellectual freedom has diminished. Censorship generates self-censorship and demonstrates a subservient relation to authority detrimental to collection development. Using instances from his professional life, the author argues that censorship infantilizes patrons, discourages critical thinking, and is counterproductive to institutions of higher learning.

Explaining Scholarship Addressing Hispanic Children’S Issues, Adolfo G. Santos
Explaining Scholarship Addressing Hispanic Children’S Issues, Adolfo G. Santos
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
The purpose of this essay is to explain the dearth of scholarship in Hispanic and Latino children’s issues. To answer this question, a data set of all the scholarship addressing Hispanic and Latino children was created. This data set was used to test two hypotheses. The first of these is that scholarship on Hispanic children is created by Hispanic scholars. The second is that government incentives lead scholars to produce scholarship. This article will show that interest in Hispanic and Latino children can be explained by the existence of Hispanic and Latino scholars, the size of the Hispanic population and …
