A Comparative Study Evaluating The Impact Of Participation In A Valor Nurse Externship On Job Satisfaction, Sense Of Belonging, Role Socialization And Sense Of Professionalism: Transitions From Graduate To Registered Nurse, Cynthia Nuttall
Nursing ETDs
There is an overall shortage of registered nurses. Additionally, there is a high turnover rate of new registered nurses. Externship programs, such as the Veterans Affairs Learning Opportunity Residency (VALOR) Scholarship Program, have been created but not been evaluated systematically. The primary purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the VALOR Program on job satisfaction, sense of belonging, professionalism and socialization by comparing two groups of VALOR and non-VALOR BSN registered nurses who graduated in 2006, 2007 or 2008. Surveys were sent to a national sample of RNs who were employed by 23 VA Medical Centers. Significant …

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works
The account of The Alliance for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (GLBTQ) Youth formation offers a model for developing com- munity-based partnerships. Based in a major urban area, this university-community collaboration was spearheaded by social workers who were responsible for its original conceptualization, for generating community support, and for eventual staffing, administration, direct service provision, and program evaluation design. This article presents the strategic development and evolution of this community- based service partnership, highlighting the roles of schools of social work, academics, and social work students in concert with community funders, practitioners and youth, in responding to the needs …

Exploring The Ancestral Roots Of American Sign Language: Lexical Borrowing From Cistercian Sign Language And French Sign Language, Keith Martin Cagle
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
American Sign Language (ASL) is the natural and preferred language of the Deaf community in both the United States and Canada. Woodward (1978) estimated that approximately 60% of the ASL lexicon is derived from early 19th century French Sign Language, which is known as langue des signes française (LSF). The lexicon of LSF and ASL may be derived from several sources such as gestures, home signs created by deaf individuals living with their hearing families, North American Indian sign languages, Martha Vineyard sign language, and new signs added to LSF and ASL through the generations. Before the emergence of LSF …

Evaluating Social Work Students’ Attitudes Toward Physical Disability, Rachael A. Haskell
Evaluating Social Work Students’ Attitudes Toward Physical Disability, Rachael A. Haskell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Given the social work profession's commitment to serving individuals with disabilities and cultural competence, the promotion of favorable attitudes toward persons with disabilities within social work education is critical. This study examined the question: "what are the attitudes of undergraduate social work students at three universities toward individuals with physical disabilities as measured by responses on the Attitudes Toward Disabled Persons Scale Form B (ATDP-Form B; Yuker et al., 1960, 1966) and Interactions with Disabled Persons Scale (Gething, 1991)?" It explored the following hypotheses, that participants who: 1) have had prior positive contact with persons with physical disabilities; 2) have …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2010-06-15, Zack Paakkonen
Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)
FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Background:
We sought to determine predictors of drinking the month before and after beginning college, as well as changes in drinking between these two periods among adjudicated students. We conducted these analyses to inform individual and university-wide approaches to addressing underage drinking, particularly among the heaviest drinkers.
Methods:
The sample consisted of 143 students entering college, adjudicated during their first semester, and interviewed during the same semester. The sample consisted of 43% women. Drinking data were collected through the Time-Line Follow-Back interview.
Results:
The average number of drinking days (DD) during the first month of college was 7.0 (SD = …
The Political Economy Of Poverty In The ‘Glocal’ Context: A Multilevel Cross-National Study, Philip Young P. Hong
The Political Economy Of Poverty In The ‘Glocal’ Context: A Multilevel Cross-National Study, Philip Young P. Hong
Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine the extent to which socio-politico-economic factors at the structural level impact individual poverty across 17 developed countries in a period of welfare state retrenchment and growing international interconnectedness. This dissertation contributes to a newly developing body of knowledge on cross-national comparison of individual poverty using multilevel analyses. This method allows for modeling various determinants of poverty (variables with different units of analysis at both individual and structural levels) together in a single analysis. The OECD and Luxembourg Income Study (LIS) data were used to conduct a cross-national comparative analysis of 17 affluent …
Becoming American: The Socio-Economic And Cultural Landscape Of Kenyan Immigrants In Chicago, Il, Cyril O. Wilson, Chapurukha M. Kusimba
Becoming American: The Socio-Economic And Cultural Landscape Of Kenyan Immigrants In Chicago, Il, Cyril O. Wilson, Chapurukha M. Kusimba
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
This study reports the emerging patterns of migration and settlement of Kenyans into the Chicago metropolitan area. Like most African immigrant communities in North America, economic downturn, political instability, and socio-economic polarization in African countries necessitated an appreciable quantum of emigration of Kenyans following the attainment of Africa's political independence in the 1960s. Most of the findings on housing characteristics, education, employment, patterns of family life, socio-cultural interaction, challenges encountered by new immigrants, and related phenomena evince parallels with other studies on African immigrants in North America.

Use Of Electronic Resources Among Academics At The University Of Karachi, Munira Nasreen Ansari, Bushra Adeeb Zuberi
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
A sample of seventy faculty from the University of Karachi Faculty of Arts were surveyed. The study explores the University of Karachi's facilities for using electronic resources. Some departments have fully-equipped computer labs, while some have a few computers. A few departments also provide computers to individual academics in their offices. An Internet connection is available to 92.9 percent of the departments. A majority of the academics have computer skills that facilitate the use of electronic resources, although a majority have little knowledge of electronic resources, which is not a positive aspect of the findings.
