The Dynamics Of Autistic-Academic Partnerships, Dora Raymaker, Christina Nicolaidis
The Dynamics Of Autistic-Academic Partnerships, Dora Raymaker, Christina Nicolaidis
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Traditionally, research about autistics has been developed without autistics, leading to systemic problems that reinforce stereotypes and divide communities. Some academics find the idea of autistics contributing meaningfully to research unthinkable, while the autistic community is often angered by research which holds no potential benefit, or is even directly harmful, to community aims. Problematic dynamics between academics and minority populations are neither new nor specific to autism research. Research approaches involving academic-community partnerships can change these dynamics to benefit all partners. Academic-community partnerships empower minorities to execute research relevant to community priorities and enable academics to perform high-quality, ethical science. …
Sex And Laughter In Women's Music, 1970-77, Sarah Dougher
Sex And Laughter In Women's Music, 1970-77, Sarah Dougher
University Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
The women's music movement of the early 1970's was created by and for women who came to political consciousness as a result of the women's liberation movement. The music culture that emerged was originally called "lesbian music", but later gained the less controversial descriptor "women's music". Outside of this music movement music produced during this period rarely made explicit links with emerging feminist consciousness. What differentiated "women's music" from other music made by women of the period was its lesbian focus (in both lyrics and performance contexts). Women's music was created for a lesbian audience to describe lesbian experiences and desires. …
Household Assets And Food Stamp Program Participation Among Eligible Low-Income Households, Jin Huang, Yunju Nam, Nora Wikoff
Household Assets And Food Stamp Program Participation Among Eligible Low-Income Households, Jin Huang, Yunju Nam, Nora Wikoff
Center for Social Development Research
This study examines the association between asset ownership and Food Stamp Program participation among eligible households using a sample from a longitudinal national survey. This study employs two approaches: A multinomial model on the level of program participation and an event history analysis on the duration of eligible nonparticipation spells. Analysis results show that home, vehicle, and bank account ownership are negatively related to program participation, suggesting that asset ownership may reduce low-income households’ chances of receiving food assistance. It is recommended that program administrators liberalize asset eligibility rules and simplify procedures to facilitate program participation among low-income asset owners.

Informing Social Work Practice Through The Enhancement Of The Biological Perspective: A Course Intervention Model For Human Service Professionals Working With Youth And Problems Of Conduct., Allison Sampson
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention model designed to enhance practitioners’ biological lens when using a biopsychosocial-spiritual model of holistic assessment and planning. The specific intervention utilized is a course curriculum developed to broaden human service professionals’ (including clinical social work professionals) understanding of attachment theory, neuroscience and trauma informed methods of practice. The course teaches professionals how to apply this knowledge to clinical assessment and intervention planning with youth who have experienced significant trauma in their lives and exhibit problems of conduct. Using an experimental design, participants from a large private mental …
Evaluate And Assess Research Methods In Work Education: Determine If Methods Used To Evaluate Work Education Research Are Valid And How Assessment Of These Methods Is Conducted, Robert E. Lee
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
This manuscript will compare, research, and comment on how work education experts and practitioners conduct research and evaluations of learning models in today’s modern society. It will measure how valid these practices are and how work education assessment tools are used to determine if learning is taking place. This paper will compare the different paradigms of learning between teaching adults vice teaching children, and give a historical perspective of how these paradigms were developed and modified over the years. The question on whether any of this research is considered useful and valid by educational practitioners will be debated and what …

Measuring The Effects Of Interpersonal Training For The Workforce, Mario Martinez, Cecilia Maldonado, Derek Lester
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
This study assesses the cumulative effect of a training curriculum focused on teamwork, which was delivered to technical employees in a multinational organization. Employees were given a 10-item survey prior to the training and four months after the survey. Several aspects of the literature were incorporated into the design of the curriculum and analysis of the results: content was tailored toward the employees’ environment, management was asked to promote the training to contribute to a positive climate, and assessment was deferred by four months to maximize the chance that employees might implement the lessons from the training into practice. The …

The Historical Development Of Program Evaluation: Exploring Past And Present, R. Lance Hogan
The Historical Development Of Program Evaluation: Exploring Past And Present, R. Lance Hogan
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
The purpose of this article is to present the historical development and significant contributions leading to the current status of the program evaluation field. Program evaluation has been defined as “judging the worth or merit of something or the product of the process” (Scriven, 1991, p. 139). Guskey (2000) updated this definition stating that evaluation is a systematic process used to determine the merit or worth of a specific program, curriculum, or strategy in a specific context. The author describes seven significant time periods in the development of program evaluation and identifies five evaluation approaches currently used by practitioners. This …

The Effects Of Psychosocial Factors On Career And Workforce Development For Students With Learning Disabilities, Stephanie L. Lusk, Dominick Fazarro
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
Individuals with learning disabilities are at a disadvantage when it comes to career and workforce development. Certain factors such as socioeconomic factors, parent’s educational level and occupations, as well as grade point average and previous work/volunteer experience affect factors that are imperative to the successful transition from school to work such as decision making, problem solving and career exploration. This segment of the population holds much potential for the advancement of our workforce and economy; however, they seem to be an untapped resource even though certain laws and incentives have been put into place to increase the hiring of these …

Distance Learning And How Access To Education Can Be Improved, Scott Collins, Richard C. Mckinnies, Sandra K. Collins
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
Throughout history, access to quality education has been an issue for many individuals. There are a variety of reasons which may have contributed to the accessibility issues including race, economic status, health conditions, and the general geographic region where a person lives. These barriers have historically prevented many people from receiving equal educational opportunities.
With advances in technology, distance education is emerging as a formidable opponent and could potentially even the playing field in terms of educational access. In order to determine the viability of this method of delivering education, a historical evolution of distance learning (DL) was explored. This …

Lessons From Learning The Craft Of Theory-Driven Research, Michael A. Dover
Social Work Faculty Publications
This paper responds to Richard's Swedberg's call for analysis of the craft of theorizing and to Gabriel Abend's work on the meanings of theory. Their work is applied to a retrospective case study of the theoretical content of the introduction to the author's dissertation. The case study includes lessons drawn from several sections of that chapter: the choice of a research topic; identifying originating, specifying and subsidiary questions; distinguishing between the object and the subject of the research; reviewing the social policy and social science relevance; identifying the relevant research tradition; presenting a general conceptual framework and a specific conceptual …

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Mental health organizations can play a key role in enhancing youths' access to care by working together to bridge gaps in service delivery systems. This dissertation study examines partnerships among a network of children's behavioral health organizations. The specific aims are to (1) describe and understand the network of partnerships among members of the Children's Services Coalition, (2) assess the capacity of the system to provide coordinated service delivery, and (3) test how patterns of organizational characteristics influence conditions that facilitate and inhibit partnerships among the Children's Service Coalition organizations. This dissertation is a predominantly quantitative cross-sectional network study of …
