Past As Prologue: Old And New Feminisms, Martha Chamallas Jan 2010

Past As Prologue: Old And New Feminisms, Martha Chamallas

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

Each "stage" of feminist legal theory-and each brand or strand of feminism- stays alive and is never completely replaced by newer approaches. When I first attempted to synthesize the field of Feminist Legal Theory for a treatise I was writing at the end of the twentieth century, I thought it would be useful to think chronologically and to analyze the major developments of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. I crudely divided feminist legal theory into three stages roughly corresponding to the preceding decades: the equality stage of the 1970s, the difference stage of the 1980s, and the diversity stage of …

More Than Just Openness: Developing And Validating A Measure Of Targeted Parent-Child Communication About Alcohol, Michelle Miller-Day, Jennifer A. Kam Jan 2010

More Than Just Openness: Developing And Validating A Measure Of Targeted Parent-Child Communication About Alcohol, Michelle Miller-Day, Jennifer A. Kam

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

Research addressing parent-child communication on the topic of alcohol use relies heavily on assessing frequency of discussions and general assessments of openness in parent-child communication, ignoring the complexity of this communication phenomenon. This study adds to the literature by articulating a conceptualization and developing a measurement of parent-child communication—targeted parent-child communication about alcohol—and comparing the efficacy of targeted parent-child communication about alcohol in predicting positive expectancies of alcohol use and recent alcohol use. The predictive power of general openness in parent-child communication and frequency of communication about alcohol also were assessed. Students in 5th and 6th grade (N = 1407) …

The Lamprey River Watershed is an important part of the Great Bay Estuary in southeastern New Hampshire. The region has experienced population growth, sprawl development, increased vehicle miles traveled, increased levels of air and water pollution, loss of critical habitat, and loss of sense of community. The Lamprey River Watershed Resident Survey was designed to bring attention to environmental and community issues in order to engage residents in long range, innovative, and regional planning. The survey was distributed to approximately 3,000 households in one mailing during National Community Planning Month, October, 2007. The data from the 768 respondents provide baseline …

Service Innovation In The Non-Profit Sector, Gabriel Boon Siong Lim Jan 2010

Service Innovation In The Non-Profit Sector, Gabriel Boon Siong Lim

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Non-profit organisations are valued because they provide services that address unmet needs. Nonprofits who engage in social entrepreneurship augment their contributions through new services, programmes, enterprises and revenue generated. It is not surprising, therefore, for policy makers to encourage social entrepreneurship, service innovations and social enterprises. However, not all nonprofits seek to innovate by creating revenue-generating social enterprises. They may continue to devote themselves to specific fields and existing practices through other forms of service innovations instead. The intent of nonprofits in starting new services is investigated through a two-pronged quantitative and qualitative research approach.

In the quantitative section, a …

How Counseling Helps: An In-Depth Look At Domestic Violence Counseling, Sonya V. Crabtree-Nelson Jan 2010

How Counseling Helps: An In-Depth Look At Domestic Violence Counseling, Sonya V. Crabtree-Nelson

Dissertations

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is currently described by trauma researchers as a social epidemic (Briere & Jordan, 2004) . The array of domestic violence services we currently have in the United States were started 30 years ago by women victims assisting other women. Currently, the services we have for victims of IPV are largely unchanged and the literature lacks information on what is helpful to victims of IPV in a domestic violence counseling setting. The research points to the fact that women seeking domestic violence counseling experience an array of physical and mental health sequelae as a result of the …

Family Communication Predicts The Decisions Of Adolescents To Engage In Sexual Behaviors, Keyanna R. Turner, Connie Tang, Jessica F. Jablonski, Sara Martino Jan 2010

Family Communication Predicts The Decisions Of Adolescents To Engage In Sexual Behaviors, Keyanna R. Turner, Connie Tang, Jessica F. Jablonski, Sara Martino

Modern Psychological Studies

This study investigated whether family communication predicted adolescent decision-making about sexual behaviors, as well as gender differences in whether adolescents prefer talking with their mother or father about sex. Male and female college students (n =148) retrospectively answered questions on a survey pertaining to their family communication about sex when they were going through puberty. Results demonstrated that females reported better communication with their mothers about sex than males, and males reported better communication with their fathers about sex than females. It also was found that the better the communication with mothers, the more informed about sex the adolescents reported …

Custody Investigations In Divorce-Custody Litigation, Robert Levy Jan 2010

Custody Investigations In Divorce-Custody Litigation, Robert Levy

Articles

Divorce custody litigation has been a social success. Despite the continuing complaints of participants-judges, lawyers, social and behavioral experts, the parents-the vast majority of couples who want to terminate their marriages and allocate control and responsibility for their children have been able to accomplish their goals relatively efficiently. And, if the law and government actors have not been terribly successful or efficient in resolving parental custody disputes that the parents' lawyers have not been able to settle, it has not been for lack of trying. Custody litigation is difficult, emotional, and unrewarding, for all participants (even financially, lawyers claim, because …

A Planning Model For Disaster Relief Agencies, Lajuana Janice Hector Jan 2010

A Planning Model For Disaster Relief Agencies, Lajuana Janice Hector

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

Rather than identify nongovernmental organizations (NGO) with traditional service delivery systems, NGOs should be viewed as a unique system with specific outcomes pertinent to resource distribution. Grounded theory was used to help design the research methodology and General Systems Theory (GST) served as the theoretical framework. Predisaster planning, training, and leadership results from the empirical research helped to identify perspectives of resource distribution. Open ended interview responses were analyzed using the open coding, content analysis, constant comparison methods which yielded management as the theme with coordination, communication, and preparation as sub-themes. While each outcome may be contingent upon each designated …

Social Work Theses - Archive

The researcher conducted an online survey through social networking sites and online college/university communications to identify the relationship between social influence (e.g. peer acceptance, media exposure) and NSSI behaviors among undergraduate and graduate students from participating colleges and universities in the United States. Descriptive statistics and chi-square analyses were utilized to analyze the research objectives and a Pearson's correlation coefficient indicated that a positive, direct relationship was found between social influence and NSSI, but it was weak and not statistically significant (r=.20, p=.12). Implications and recommendations for future research as well as practice are discussed.

The Care, Custody, And Control Of Incarcerated Women In Ecuador, Jill Harrison, Maureen Norton-Hawk

Societies Without Borders

This paper presents findings on the custody, care and control of incarcerated women in Ecuador. Although the interrelationship of abuse, poverty, drugs and incarceration is often perceived as a U.S. phenomenon, this paper presents data on a group of structurally and institutionally vulnerable women who are serving mandatory sentences of 6 to 8 years for drug possession and trafficking. Our mixed methodology of survey data, personal interviews, and secondary source materials uncovers some disturbing human rights violations and documents the challenges these incarcerated women face as mothers and inmates.
