The Role Of Savings And Wealth In Reducing "Wilt" Between Expectations And College Attendance, William Elliott Iii, Sondra G. Beverly
The Role Of Savings And Wealth In Reducing "Wilt" Between Expectations And College Attendance, William Elliott Iii, Sondra G. Beverly
Center for Social Development Research
“Wilt” occurs when a young person who expects to attend college while in high school does not attend college shortly after graduating. In this study we find that youth with no account in their own name are more likely to experience wilt than any other group examined. In multivariate analysis, youth who expect to graduate from a four-year college and have an account are approximately seven times more likely to attend college than youth who have no account. Youth who expect to graduate from a four-year college and have designated a portion of their savings for college are approximately four …

Emotional Abuse And Controlling Behaviors In Heterosexual Relationships: The Role Of Employment And Alcohol Use For Women And Their Partners, Egbert Zavala, Ryan Spohn
Center on Children, Families, and the Law: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study is to examine the role of economic resources, status compatibility, and alcohol consumption on forms of nonphysical abuse, such as controlling and emotional abuse. Specifically, we focus on the connections between women’s employment, the employment of their partners, alcohol use, and women’s risk of abuse in intimate relationships. We hypothesize that women in intimate relationships with men will experience more emotional abuse to the extent that they are economically vulnerable. Moreover, abuse should increase if their employment status, in relation to that of their partner, challenges the man’s marital power. Moreover, alcohol use by women …

Of Modest Giving, Community Values And Social Change: An Interview With Hsieh Fu Hua, Lien Centre For Social Innovation
Social Space
Recognising the need for building capability and filling in critical gaps in management training, expertise and research in Singapore’s social scene, businessman and contemporary art enthusiast Hsieh Fu Hua has established Binjai Tree to make his contribution in a more structured fashion. Yet he reminisces about the cultural tradition of communities providing solidarity and support to its members and tells Social Space why a more modest and quiet approach to the simple act of giving is a way to encourage more Singaporeans to cultivate a spirit of altruism.
The Contextual Impact Of Income Inequality On Social Capital And Adverse Social Outcomes, Jeannie Schiff
The Contextual Impact Of Income Inequality On Social Capital And Adverse Social Outcomes, Jeannie Schiff
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An interdisciplinary approach to policy and governance recognizes that many social welfare problems are interrelated, and policy-makers have long recognized a need to address the root causes of these problems. There is much evidence that income inequality is one of these root causes but research suggesting the effect of income inequality is mediated by social capital has complicated the relationship, as have theories of causality that take different approaches. This study takes an ecological approach to these issues to test the relationship between income inequality, social capital and selected adverse outcomes proposed by the relative income hypothesis. The relative income …

Charter Rights & Health Care Funding: A Typology Of Canadian Health Rights Litigation, Colleen M. Flood, Y.Y. Brandon Chen
Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences
Canadian health consumers have increasingly relied on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms to demand certain therapies and reasonably timely access to care. Organizing these cases into a 5-part typology, we examine how a rights-based discourse affects allocation of health care resources. First, successful Charter challenges can, in theory, lead to courts granting and enforcing positive rights to therapies or to timely care. Second, courts may grant a right to certain health services; however, subsequently government fails to deliver on this right. Third, successful litigation may create negative rights, i.e. rights to access care or private health insurance without government …

Black Mobilization In Pre-Revolutionary Cuba: Regeneracion And Bicultural Nationalism, Jordan Daniel Adams
Black Mobilization In Pre-Revolutionary Cuba: Regeneracion And Bicultural Nationalism, Jordan Daniel Adams
Open Access Theses
Many black Cubans decided to join the Cuban criollo separatists in their fight for independence from Spain in the late nineteenth century because rebellion seemed to promise a means to end slavery and shake their bonds of second class citizenship. To a large degree this was true as Cuban independence represented a multiracial triumph that ignored race and social status. Racial fraternity quickly faded, though, as the twentieth century began and black Cubans found themselves in the same disadvantaged position as before independence. This essay discusses how racism and limitations on black organization in the early republic dashed any real …

Sustained Dialogue And Civic Life: Post-College Impacts, Ande Diaz, Rachael Perrault
Office of Intercultural Center Staff Publications
This study examined the civic outcomes of the Sustained Dialogue model. Qualitative interviews investigated the perceived impacts of dialogue experience on post-graduate civic life, generating an inventory of 29 dialogue civic outcomes across five domains: 1) cognitions, 2) behaviors, 3) attitudes 4) skills, and 5) hopes and plans for the future. Results extend past research by finding that perceived dialogue impacts lasted into the post-college years and affected future hopes and plans. Additional impacts were identified: (1) across various civic arenas of society, and (2) a transformative "restringing" effect, in which participants reported they were changed or transformed in subtle, …
State Employment Protection Statutes For Victims Of Domestic Violence As An Employment Matter, Jennifer E. Swanberg, Mamta U. Ojha
State Employment Protection Statutes For Victims Of Domestic Violence As An Employment Matter, Jennifer E. Swanberg, Mamta U. Ojha
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
Evidence indicates that domestic violence has negative consequences on victims’ employment; yet employers lag in recognizing this as a workplace issue. To address the problem, some states have established several policy solutions. To understand the scope of the public sector’s response to domestic violence as a workplace issue, a content analysis of state-level employment protection policies for domestic violence victims (N=369) was conducted. Results indicate three broad policy categories: 1) policies that offer work leave for victims; 2) policies that aim to reduce employment discrimination of domestic violence victims; and 3) policies that aim to increase awareness and safety in …

Technologies That Assist In Closing The Achievement Gap: A Comparison African American And Caucasian Students’ Learning And Community In The Online Classroom, Amanda J. Rockinson-Szapkiw, Randall Dunn, Holder David
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Higher Education administrators and educators seek to understand how to design and to facilitate online courses to ensure quality, culturally responsive online education for minority students, specifically African American students, and to close the academic achievement gap that exists today. This study examines online students’ using both synchronous and asynchronous technologies to determine whether students’ social presence, cognitive presence, teacher presence, and perceived learning differ based upon ethnicity. A one-way multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was conducted. Results yielded no significant difference in dependent variables based on ethnicity.

Dickens Redux: How American Child Labor Law Became A Con Game, Seymour Moskowitz
Dickens Redux: How American Child Labor Law Became A Con Game, Seymour Moskowitz
Law Faculty Publications
Millions of American teens are employed today in a variety of workplaces. The jobs they hold typically provide little human capital for their future economic self·sufficiency, and pose substantial immediate and long-term safety, academic, and behavioral risks for this generation. This Article seeks to answer the question of how American law and society reached this situation, which has such disastrous effects for working youth, their families, and society as a whole. Three main themes are developed:
1. Child labor has always been part of the American economy, from colonial times until today. While there have been more than 150 years …

Florence Kelley And The Battle Against Laissez-Faire Constitutionalism, Felice J. Batlan
Florence Kelley And The Battle Against Laissez-Faire Constitutionalism, Felice J. Batlan
All Faculty Scholarship
The usual story of the demise of laissez-faire constitutionalism in the 1930’s features heroes such as Louis Brandeis, Felix Frankfurter and the great male legal progressives of the day who rose up from academia, the bench, and the bar, to put an end to what historians label "legal orthodoxy." In this essay, I seek to demonstrate that Florence Kelley was a crucially important legal progressive who was at the front lines of drafting and defending new legislation that courts were striking down as violating the Fourteenth Amendment and State constitutions. Looking at who was drafting and lobbying for path breaking …
