Modern Transnational Yoga: A History Of Spiritual Commodification, Jon A. Brammer
Modern Transnational Yoga: A History Of Spiritual Commodification, Jon A. Brammer
Master of Arts in Religious Studies (M.A.R.S. Theses)
Yoga as both a physical activity and a spiritual practice has become an established part of Western culture. In recent years, the interest in postural forms of yoga and the philosophy from which they spring has developed into a multi-billion dollar industry; it has spawned volumes of popular histories and "how-to" books on the subject. However, scholars are only beginning to understand the true roots of modern transnational yoga (MTY) as it has developed in recent times. This thesis reviews the last two decades of scholarship in order to provide a credible explanation for MTY origins and argues that viewing …

Saints In Sin City: Religion And Community Building In Twentieth Century Las Vegas, Matthew R. Davis
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Due to an absence of social and religious tradition, Las Vegas provided the perfect setting for Jewish and Mormon faiths to create communities closely linked to their own spiritual doctrine. This thesis traces the evolution of these groups from the turn of the twentieth-century to the present, focusing on issues such as education, geographic location, and business acumen as avenues for personal and spiritual growth. This thesis also considers the relatively small number of religious studies conducted in the American West, and serves as a possible example for future study by using an urban religious framework to synthesize the dearth …
The Great And Marvelous Change: An Alternate Interpretation, Clifford P. Jones
The Great And Marvelous Change: An Alternate Interpretation, Clifford P. Jones
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
The customary interpretation of 3 Nephi 11:1 has been that those around the temple in Bountiful were showing one another the “ great and marvelous change” that had taken place in the land. However, Jones argues that those people were discussing instead the change that had taken place in their hearts. By examining the context in which this scripture appears and by interpreting other scriptures, especially ones emphasizing the way in which most revelation is received, Jones shows that the atonement of Jesus Christ and the individuals’ subsequent change of heart would have been the main topic of their discussion …
Say "Amen" For The Sistahs: The Rhetoric Of Womanist Preaching, Kimberly Patrice Johnson
Say "Amen" For The Sistahs: The Rhetoric Of Womanist Preaching, Kimberly Patrice Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
AbstractThis exploratory study of womanist preaching seeks an answer to the question: how does womanist preaching attempt to transform/adapt the tenets of womanist thought to make it rhetorically viable in the church? And what is gained and lost in this? Through a close reading of various texts, I am able to discover: 1) what rhetorical strategies are employed to advance the womanist position, 2) how sermons function to raise the audience’s critical awareness, 3) how the sermons lead to the transformation of the audience, and 4) how to differentiate between the various facets of womanist preaching. This project identifies five women …

De Anima, Dna: A Modified Stump/Aquinas Hylomorphic Model, The Soul And The Identity Of Human Persons, Resurrected, Matthew Grant Mcdaniel
Masters Theses
In contemporary metaphysics, there are two popular options for personal numerical identity (NID) over time: substance dualism and materialism. According to recent arguments by some Christian philosophers, both options conflict with the Christian doctrine of the bodily resurrection. Substance dualism trivializes the physical body for NID (when it has some kind of role in the bodily resurrection), and also is seen to conflict with modern neuroscience. But NID and mind cannot be continued solely by the material body, as versions of the Replacement Argument (from Richard Swinburne and Alvin Plantinga) show. There are good aspects to both options, especially with …

Watchmen And Mimetic Theory: Are We Ready For Rorschach?, Vanessa Avery
Watchmen And Mimetic Theory: Are We Ready For Rorschach?, Vanessa Avery
Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
Captive on a flight across the Atlantic, I viewed the movie Watchmen, which is an adaptation from the graphic novel by Alan Moore. Watchmen, in short, is the story of a band of “dark” superheroes who, despite good intentions, succumb to violence and fail in their yearnings for justice. To my delight and surprise, Watchmen is also an undeniable illustration of Girard’s mimetic theory, and a philosophical exploration of possible responses to a culture trapped in a destructive mimetic cycle. In a climactic scene, Moore’s character Rorschach speaks a stunningly fundamental Girardian truth: “God doesn’t make the world …

Unidentified Allies: Intersections Of Feminist And Transpersonal Thought And Potential Contributions To Social Change, Christine Brooks
Unidentified Allies: Intersections Of Feminist And Transpersonal Thought And Potential Contributions To Social Change, Christine Brooks
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Contemporary Western feminism and transpersonalism are kaleidoscopic, consisting of
interlocking influences, yet the fields have developed in parallel rather than in tandem.
Both schools of praxis developed during the climate of activism and social experimentation
of the 1960s in the United States, and both share a non-pathological view of the human
experience. This discussion suggests loci of synthesized theoretical constructs between the
two disciplines as well as distinct concepts and practices in both disciplines that may serve
the other. Ways in which a feminist-transpersonal perspective may catalyze social change on
personal, regional, and global levels are proposed.

Halldor Laxness And The Latter-Day Saints: The Story Behind The Novel Paradisarheimt, Fred E. Woods
Halldor Laxness And The Latter-Day Saints: The Story Behind The Novel Paradisarheimt, Fred E. Woods
BYU Studies
On the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Halldor Laxness's Mormon-themed novel Paradisarheimt (Paradise Reclaimed), BYU professor Fred E. Woods tells the story of how the Nobel-prize winning author became interested in the topic of Mormon Icelandic immigration to Utah. Woods shares correspondence between Laxness and Latter-day Saints, thus portraying the friendships that developed as Laxness visited Utah for book research and continued to write to his friends for more information. Woods compares stories of real Icelandic Mormon immigrants with the fictional characters in Laxness's novel. At the time of the book's publication, some Mormon readers felt that …
