A Bi-Regional Cge Model Of The South West Housing Market, Sarah-Jane Keast Jan 2010

A Bi-Regional Cge Model Of The South West Housing Market, Sarah-Jane Keast

Plymouth Business School Theses

Volatility within the UK housing market is thought to be a significant factor driving instability in the wider macro economy. Research investigating the characteristics and behaviour of the housing market has suggested that under supply of housing is one of the key reasons for the high and increasing levels of house prices the nation has recently been experiencing. Consequently, much of the current government's housing policy is aimed at increasing the level of supply by reforming the planning system and increasing investment in the development of new housing. Under supply is also a major concern at the regional level, particularly …

Impact Of Ifrs Adoption On Stock Performance And Financial Indicators: A Comparative Study Between Germany And The Uk, Ashraf Elsayed Mostafa Elbakry Jan 2010

Impact Of Ifrs Adoption On Stock Performance And Financial Indicators: A Comparative Study Between Germany And The Uk, Ashraf Elsayed Mostafa Elbakry

Plymouth Business School Theses

The compulsory adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs) in Europe has been one of the most important developments in the accounting and finance literature in the last couple of years. IFRSs have promised to provide more accurate and transparent financial statements, and hence to be more value-relevant to investors than local GAAP. Because there are broadly two different accounting systems in force in Europe: the accounting system adopted in common-law countries and the accounting system adopted in code-law countries and because the nature and concept of each accounting system is entirely different, researchers believe that the compulsory adoption of …

Cockroaches, Ryan S. Davis Jan 2010

Cockroaches, Ryan S. Davis

All Current Publications

Cockroaches are one of the most difficult structural pests to eradicate because of their ability to hide, rapid reproduction, and resistance to and avoidance of many commonly used insecticide sprays and baits. Using an integrated pest management (IPM) program can greatly increase the possibility of successful control. There are 4 cockroach species that commonly infest structures in Utah, each with a specific biology; identify invading cockroaches before you develop an IPM plan. Proper identification of any pest will allow you to understand its biology, and use it against itself!

Top Ten Pathogenic Diseases Of Woody Ornamentals, Jaydee Gunnell Jan 2010

Top Ten Pathogenic Diseases Of Woody Ornamentals, Jaydee Gunnell

All Current Publications

Three elements need to be present for a plant disease to develop: a host, a suitable environment and a pathogenic organism. Most plant pathogens are either fungi or bacteria. Below are ten of the more common pathogenic plant diseases associated with woody ornamentals in the Intermountain area.

Bio-Informatics Analysis Of A Gene Co-Expression Module In Adipose Tissue Containing The Diet-Responsive Gene Nnat., X Li.X, Pa Thomason, Dj Withers, J Scott Jan 2010

Bio-Informatics Analysis Of A Gene Co-Expression Module In Adipose Tissue Containing The Diet-Responsive Gene Nnat., X Li.X, Pa Thomason, Dj Withers, J Scott

Peninsula Medical School

Obesity causes insulin resistance in target tissues - skeletal muscle, adipose tissue, liver and the brain. Insulin resistance predisposes to type-2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Adipose tissue inflammation is an essential characteristic of obesity and insulin resistance. Neuronatin (Nnat) expression has been found to be altered in a number of conditions related to inflammatory or metabolic disturbance, but its physiological roles and regulatory mechanisms in adipose tissue, brain, pancreatic islets and other tissues are not understood.

Effects Of Hif-1 And Hif2 On Growth And Metabolism Of Clear-Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma 786-0 Xenografts, S Biswas, H Troy, R Leek, Y-L Chung, Et Al Jan 2010

Effects Of Hif-1 And Hif2 On Growth And Metabolism Of Clear-Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma 786-0 Xenografts, S Biswas, H Troy, R Leek, Y-L Chung, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

In cultured clear-cell renal carcinoma (CCRCC) 786-0 cells transfected with HIF1α (HIF-1+), HIF-2α (HIF-2+), or empty vector (EV), no significant differences were observed in the growth rates in vitro, but when grown in vivo as xenografts HIF-2α significantly increased, and HIF-1α significantly decreased growth rates, compared to EV tumors. Factors associated with proliferation were increased and factors associated with cell death were decreased in HIF-2+ tumors. Metabolite profiles showed higher glucose and lower lactate and alanine levels in the HIF-2+ tumors whilst immunostaining demonstrated higher pyruvate dehydrogenase and lower pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 1, compared to control tumors. Taken together, these …

Physical And Chemical Stability Of Cisplatin Infusions In Pvc Containers, Gj Sewell Jan 2010

Physical And Chemical Stability Of Cisplatin Infusions In Pvc Containers, Gj Sewell

School of Health Professions

Study objectives: To determine the extended chemical and physical stability of cisplatin infusions in PVC containers at normal in-use concentrations in saline, with and without added electrolyte combinations relevant to clinical practice. Methods: Cisplatin infusions 0.1-0.4 mg/mL were prepared in normal saline, with and without magnesium sulphate and potassium chloride supplements in 500 mL PVC bags, and stored at 25°C protected from light. Chemical stability was assessed by a stability-indicating LC method. Evidence for precipitation was detected by a light-blocking particle count method for sub-visible particles, supported by visual examination. pH and weight changes were also monitored for at least …

Multimodal Structure Of Baroclinic Tides In The South China Sea, V. Vlasenko, N. Stashchuk, C. Guo, X. Chen Jan 2010

Multimodal Structure Of Baroclinic Tides In The South China Sea, V. Vlasenko, N. Stashchuk, C. Guo, X. Chen

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The modelling of baroclinic tides generated in the northern South China Sea is studied using a fully-nonlinear non-hydrostatic numerical model. The focus of the modelling efforts was on the vertical structure of internal waves in the vicinity of the Luzon Strait. The barotropic tidal flow interacting with a two-ridge bottom topography in the area of the Luzon Strait produces a complex baroclinic tidal signal. A multimodal baroclinic bore with counter-phase displacement of isopycnals generated over the ridges and propagating westward disintegrates into a series of large-amplitude solitary internal waves. The leading first-mode solitary wave of depression is followed by a …
