The Relationship Of Depression With Intrinsic And Extrinsic Components Of Religiosity In The Older Adult Female, Jacqueline Anne Nuval

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this doctoral research was to determine whether religious activity and general health would predict depression in older adult women living alone in the community who are widowed, divorced, separated, or never married. Variables considered included intrinsic and extrinsic components of religiosity, level of depression, anxiety and panic attacks, general health, and a group of behaviors classified as Religious Attitudes and Behaviors (RAB), which considered importance of religion, religious participation, regularity of religious observance, and religious organization/social support. Components of extrinsic religiosity and intrinsic religiosity were measured by Intrinsic/Extrinsic – Revised (I/E-R). Levels of depression were measured by …

Perceptions Of Faculty Caring: Comparison Of Distance And Traditional Graduate Nursing Students, Lea R. Hall Jan 2010

Perceptions Of Faculty Caring: Comparison Of Distance And Traditional Graduate Nursing Students, Lea R. Hall

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The concept of caring has played a vital role in nursing education. Role modeling has been identified as the primary way to teach caring and has been investigated extensively. As caring has evolved, so has the ways in which we educate nurses. Countless institutions now offer distance education programs in nursing in an effort to address the nurse and nurse educator shortage. It is unclear, however, from the nursing education literature if the modeling of caring can be transferred to students in a distance learning environment. This study investigated the impact of learning environment, program satisfaction, and persistence on graduate …

Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers

TARGET POPULATION: This recommendation applies to adults with newly diagnosed brain metastases; however, the recommendation below does not apply to the exquisitely chemosensitive tumors, such as germinomas metastatic to the brain.

RECOMMENDATION: Should patients with brain metastases receive chemotherapy in addition to whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT)? Level 1 Routine use of chemotherapy following WBRT for brain metastases has not been shown to increase survival and is not recommended. Four class I studies examined the role of carboplatin, chloroethylnitrosoureas, tegafur and temozolomide, and all resulted in no survival benefit. Two caveats are provided in order to allow the treating physician to …

Does Nighttime Television Influence Attitudes Toward Drinking?, Mike Mchone Jan 2010

Does Nighttime Television Influence Attitudes Toward Drinking?, Mike Mchone

Master's Theses

Alcoholism is a problem in the United States. Television portrays individuals drinking alcohol. Is television influencing attitudes toward drinking? An experiment was performed with students from San Josè State University in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications to discover if television would indeed influence them to drink.

Two groups, both Mass Communication classes, participated in an initial survey, and then the test group class viewed a dramatized program in which the main character was depicted drinking glamorously. Both classes then took the same survey again. Results were analyzed via a t-test. Although there was a change in attitude regarding …

Aircraft Deconfliction Responsibility Across En Route Sectors In Nextgen Separation Assurance, Christopher Donald Douglas Cabrall Jan 2010

Aircraft Deconfliction Responsibility Across En Route Sectors In Nextgen Separation Assurance, Christopher Donald Douglas Cabrall

Master's Theses

The subject of the current research is a Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) concept that involves automated separation assurance developed to enable controllers to provide both safe and efficient air traffic services at much higher traffic densities than possible today. The study investigated the issue of how responsibility should be handled between controllers for the resolution of a conflict that is predicted to occur in a sector other than where it was detected. Two possibilities, a De-Conflicting AirPlanes procedure (DCAP) versus a De-Conflicting AirSpace procedure (DCAS), were examined under human-in-the-loop simulations with scripted aircraft conflicts. Results showed that the …

Undergraduate Music Student Stress And Burnout, Helen Jane Orzel Jan 2010

Undergraduate Music Student Stress And Burnout, Helen Jane Orzel

Master's Theses

Burnout is fatigue and diminished interest caused by long-term stress. It is characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and lack of personal accomplishment. In the university music atmosphere, stress and burnout are prevalent and accepted as part of the culture. Symptoms and causes of general stress and burnout have been well researched, but much less has been presented on college musicians' burnout, let alone how to deal with it. This study examines the sources of stress, burnout, and ways of coping for undergraduate music students.

A questionnaire with both quantitative and open-ended questions was administered during the 2009 spring semester. Participants …

An electronic survey was distributed to 1,399 LeaderShape graduates who attended a national session between 1986 and 2004, resulting in 207 (14.8%) responses. Quantitative questions were analyzed utilizing SPSS …

Do Constitutions Make A Difference In The Protection Of Fundamental Human Rights? Comparing The United States And Israel, Susan M. Akram Jan 2010

Do Constitutions Make A Difference In The Protection Of Fundamental Human Rights? Comparing The United States And Israel, Susan M. Akram

Faculty Scholarship

This is a tale of two states: one with a constitution and one without. It is a tale that has no moral but ends with the question whether, from the perspective of fundamental human rights, a constitution makes a significant difference? The tale compares the United States of America, a country with a robust, well-entrenched federal Constitution that forms the fundamental compact of its society, with Israel, a country without a formal constitution, but with a set of ‘basic laws’, that operates with two distinct legal systems for the two national entities residing within its jurisdiction.

This chapter can only …

Paying The Price For Too Big To Fail, Cornelius K. Hurley Jan 2010

Paying The Price For Too Big To Fail, Cornelius K. Hurley

Faculty Scholarship

We find ourselves in an economic crisis, the severity of which few persons living today have witnessed. Fear, the natural accompaniment of such crises, arises from our uncertainty about the depth and duration of the crisis. The consensus is that a restoration of confidence is fundamental to a recovery. From the eye of the storm, it is difficult to assess the effectiveness of attempts at quelling its ravages. Yet, we may have little choice but to begin making those assessments as the architecture of the new order is being designed now.

The origins of the current crisis are well recorded. …

Charities And Terrorist Financing, David G. Duff Jan 2010

Charities And Terrorist Financing, David G. Duff

All Faculty Publications

A decade after the bombing of Air India Flight 182 in June 1985, many Canadians were shocked to learn that the Babbar Khalsa Society – a militant organization dedicated to the establishment of an independent state in northern India, members of which are believed to have planned the Air India bombing – had been granted charitable status in Canada. Although the organization’s charitable status was revoked in 1996, reports also suggested that funds collected to support Sikh temples in Canada may have been diverted to support Sikh militancy in India. This article examines the relationship between charities and terrorist financing …

The Backlash Against Investment Arbitration: Perceptions And Reality, Michael Waibel, Asha Kaushal, Kwo-Hwa Liz Chung, Claire Balchin

All Faculty Publications

Commentators increasingly question whether a backlash against the foreign investment regime is underway. This book, the outgrowth of a conference organized by the editors at Harvard Law School on April 19, 2008, aims to uncover the drivers behind the backlash against the current international investment regime. A diverse set of contributors reflect on the current state and the future direction of the international investment regime, and offer some tentative solutions for improvement: academics, practitioners, government officials and civil society. Contributors assess whether the current regime of investment arbitration is in crisis. They take a step back to look at the …

Current Patent Laws Cannot Claim The Backing Of Human Rights, Wendy J. Gordon Jan 2010

Current Patent Laws Cannot Claim The Backing Of Human Rights, Wendy J. Gordon

Faculty Scholarship

In the dispute over the enforcement of pharmaceutical patents, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights is sometimes cited as giving patent protection the status of a 'human right'. It is true that the ICESCR provides for ‘the right of everyone’ ‘[t]o benefit from the protection of the moral and material interests resulting from any scientific, literary or artistic production of which he is the author’. But that does not mean that patent protection is a human right. Patent fails as a human right for many reasons, one of which is the lack of fit between current patent …

The Slave Trade Is Back: Confronting Human Trafficking In Canada And Beyond, Benjamin Perrin Jan 2010

The Slave Trade Is Back: Confronting Human Trafficking In Canada And Beyond, Benjamin Perrin

All Faculty Publications

Individual liberty is being systematically attacked in Canada and around the world with a resurgence in the last two decades of human trafficking — a modern-day form of slavery. Modern-day slavery is thriving in countries as diverse as Cambodia and Costa Rica, India and Italy, as well as the Ukraine and the United States itself. International policing agencies say that illegal profits from modern-day slavery rival that of drug and weapons trafficking. While countries around the world have been tackling the issue for over a decade, Canada’s response has been comparatively lethargic due to a lack of widespread awareness about …

Family Reunion, Carly Miller Jan 2010

Family Reunion, Carly Miller

Theses

This thesis, Family Reunion examines notions of family heritage, collection, and intimacy through the use of photographic portraiture. I observe the ways in which large format photography contributes to a larger photographic endeavor involving time and travel to investigate family relationships and genealogy. The thesis also addresses how American culture acquires, records, stores, preserves, displays, and passes on family photographs. Familial objects either preserve or lose meaning as they are passed down through generations. Family Reunion emphasizes the collection of images we preserve to record and represent our familial history, while addressing both personal and cultural significance between the need …

What Would Coase Do? (About Parking Regulation), Michael Lewyn Jan 2010

What Would Coase Do? (About Parking Regulation), Michael Lewyn

Scholarly Works

Like many government regulations, municipal minimum parking requirements exist to prevent externalities - most notably the congestion, pollution and greenhouse gas emissions that occur when motorists drive around a city searching for scarce parking. But because such regulations make parking (and thus driving) cheaper, such regulations may in fact increase congestion and pollution, thus creating, rather than reducing, externalities.

Dynamic Fault Tolerant Grid Workflow In The Water Threat Management Project, Young Suk Moon Jan 2010

Dynamic Fault Tolerant Grid Workflow In The Water Threat Management Project, Young Suk Moon

How Does The Power Crisis Problem Affect Data Management In The Dominican Republic, José Raúl Vélez Díaz Jan 2010

How Does The Power Crisis Problem Affect Data Management In The Dominican Republic, José Raúl Vélez Díaz

Theses

In the last decade, the Dominican Republic has been affected by a power crisis nation wide. In 2008, the crisis reached a deficit of 40% in the generation of power; and the problem seems to go on as no agreement is executed to solve it. The problem is originated from the lack of efficiency of many generators, and debts with the generators companies. An important aspect of the power crisis is the challenge to provide power quality to electronic equipment. Data management can be affected by this problem whenever there is data corruption or lost, and devices are damaged. Data …
