Citation Difficulties, Mariolina Rizzi Salvatori, Patricia Donahue Jan 2010

Citation Difficulties, Mariolina Rizzi Salvatori, Patricia Donahue

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Issues of citation have interested us for some time, especially as they relate to reductive and dismissive representations of student work in our professional discourse: for example, how scholarly articles foreground the status of students as “student” or how the move of referring to students by first name only is infantilizing (see Salvatori and Donahue, 2010). We also have a long standing interest in writing about teaching in ways that our primary field (English Studies) and SoTL would recognize as “scholarly”: intellectual inquiries into processes of teaching and learning that build upon previously published research, cite it appropriately, and acknowledge …

Premises For Changing To Pbl, Anette Kolmos Jan 2010

Premises For Changing To Pbl, Anette Kolmos

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Although SoTL research provides results documenting the efficiency of problem-based and project-based learning, the process of change at the institutional levels all over the world is slow. Based on research and experience from the UNESCO Chair work all over the world, I point out seven premises for changing to PBL: governance and educational policy, research and political pragmatism, change at institutional and individual level, leadership, implementation, trust in students’ learning and global societies. These are premises at very different levels; however, in the global society they all play a role in the process of changing higher education. This essay places …

Qualitative Findings From An Experientially Designed Exercise Immunology Course: Holistic Wellness Benefits, Self-Efficacy Gains, And Integration Of Prior Course Learning, Jennifer R. Curry, Laura Fazio-Griffith, Russell Carson, Laura Stewart

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Experiential education is a well documented approach to engaging student learners. This manuscript presents findings from a qualitative inquiry, specifically focus group discussions, investigating the perceptions of 28 student participants in a learning opportunity provided to a kinesiology class involving structured group exercise (marathon training). Findings revealed participants’ gains in holistic wellness development, general and specified efficacy, and understanding and integration of course content.

The Effect Of Service-Learning On Interdisciplinary Learning And Curriculum Reinforcement, And Its Application To Public School Environments, Madeline Kovarik Jan 2010

The Effect Of Service-Learning On Interdisciplinary Learning And Curriculum Reinforcement, And Its Application To Public School Environments, Madeline Kovarik

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This qualitative research project focused on the impact of service-learning experiences on an interdisciplinary college freshman course. The research included the impact on academic learning, the application of concepts into a public school educational environment, and the perceptions regarding the contribution to the school being served. Participants were college freshmen students who received pre and post surveys and participated in both verbal and written reflections. Analysis of the survey responses and reflection data indicated the service-learning experiences enhanced student learning. Analysis of data also indicated a disconnect between recognized community needs and college student involvement toward fulfilling the needs.

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This essay describes The Evolving Professional (EP) concept at use within the School of Dentistry, the University of Queensland as a mutli-level framework that connects the learner and the educator in the scholarship of learning, the scholarship of teaching and learning and professional development. Perspectives and reflections into how this concept could be used to connect the nexus between professional development and scholarship of teaching and learning, to broaden the “teaching commons” and how this concept relates to learners and educators of professional training programs are explored.

Situating Sotl Within The Disciplines: Mathematics In The United States As A Case Study, Jacqueline Dewar, Curtis Bennett Jan 2010

Situating Sotl Within The Disciplines: Mathematics In The United States As A Case Study, Jacqueline Dewar, Curtis Bennett

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

After two decades of work, many in the SoTL community are pondering the future of the SoTL movement. Will it sustain its influence? Will it continue to attract new participants? What role should the disciplines play? From the perspective of mathematics, this paper examines efforts by the Carnegie Academy and individuals within the mathematical community to build disciplinary support for the scholarship of teaching and learning. The authors, both mathematicians and Carnegie scholars, restrict their observations to the efforts undertaken in the United States during the last decade and examine the situation in mathematics in greater depth than has heretofore …

Faculty Development And Adult Learning: A Model For Transforming Higher Education, Karen Weller Swanson, Mary Kayler

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt: Summer classes were about to begin and we sat around a table wondering what the three of us might have in common to teach the seventy master's students coming next week. Leo was a sociologist and we (Karen and Mary) are curriculum and instruction faculty. We all agreed it was going to require a transformed approach to teaching and collaborating together; that was six years and three cohorts ago. Our intent is to share...

Personal Reflection: A Reflection On Encouraging Critical Thinking And Empathy: Using So-Tl To Examine Teaching Effectiveness In A Social Justice In Graduate Education Class, Jacquelyn Lewis-Harris

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Abstract This essay addresses the search for a more comprehensive and reflective method through which to analyze the efficacy of my teaching approach in a graduate level social justice in education class. I explored tenets of scholarship in teaching and learning as a basis for developing a more coherent and organic assessment approach, with the goal of assisting students to better address the intellectual challenges posed by the discussion and application of sensitive social justice topics. I was also interested in using scholarship of teaching and learning to analyze the effectiveness of the applied anthropological approach, now employed to assist …

Development And Implementation Of Challenge Based Instruction In Statics And Dynamics, Robert Freeman, Horacio Vasquez, Arturo A. Fuentes, Martin Knecht, Taylor Martin, Joan Walker, Araceli Ortiz

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper discusses challenge-based instructional (CBI) materials developed for courses in Statics and Dynamics. This effort is a component of a funded College Cost Reduction and Access Act (CCRAA) grant from the Department of Education, and focuses on student retention and development of adaptive expertise. Studies have shown that minority science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) students leave STEM undergraduate fields in part due to lack of real world connections to their classroom learning experiences. Furthermore, in STEM fields the conventional approach is to teach for efficiency first and for innovation only in the latter years of the curriculum. This …

Dietary Patterns And Markers For The Metabolic Syndrome In Australian Adolescents, Gina L. Ambrosini, Rae-Chi Huang, Trevor A. Mori, Beth P. Hands, Therese O'Sullivan, Nicholas H. De Klerk, Lawrence J. Beilin, Wendy H. Oddy

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Background and Aims: Overweight and other risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) as well as their clustering, or the metabolic syndrome, are increasingly prevalent among children and adolescents. We examined dietary patterns, CVD risk factors, and the clustering of these risk factors, in 1139 14 year olds living in Western Australia.

Methods and Results: Usual dietary intake was assessed with a food frequency questionnaire. Two dietary patterns, ‘Western’ and ‘Healthy’, were identified using factor analysis. Associations between these dietary patterns and BMI, waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, fasting levels of serum glucose, insulin, total cholesterol, HDL C, LDL C, triglycerides …

Body Mass Index, Adiposity Rebound And Early Feeding In A Longitudinal Cohort (Raine Study), Paola Chivers, Beth P. Hands, Helen Parker, Max K. Bulsara, Lawrence Beilin, Garth Kendall, Wendy Oddy

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Objective: This study examined the influence of type and duration of infant feeding on adiposity rebound and the tracking of body mass index (BMI) from birth to 14 years.

Methods: A sample of 1330 individuals over eight follows-ups was drawn from the Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study. Trajectories of BMI from birth to adolescence using linear mixed model (LMM) analysis investigated the influence of age breastfeeding stopped and age other milk introduced (binomial 4-month cut-point). A sub-sample of LMM predicted BMI was used to determine BMI and age at nadir for early infant feeding groups.

Results: Chi square analysis …

Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

Degeneration of septal neurons in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) results in abnormal information processing at cortical circuits and consequent brain dysfunction. The septum modulates the activity of hippocampal and cortical circuits and is crucial to the initiation and occurrence of oscillatory activities such as the hippocampal theta rhythm. Previous studies suggest that amyloid β peptide (Aβ) accumulation may trigger degeneration in AD. This study evaluates the effects of single injections of Aβ 1–40 into the medial septum. Immunohistochemistry revealed a decrease in septal cholinergic (57%) and glutamatergic (53%) neurons in Aβ 1–40 treated tissue. Additionally, glutamatergic terminals were significantly less in …

Correlations between BMI and PBF and between FMI and PBF were investigated. The percentage of persons misclassified as obese using different classifications was calculated. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to generate predictive models of FMI for males and females separately.

Results: BMI and PBF were …

Effects Of Bondline Thickness On Nonlinear Interfacial Fracture Of Bonded Adhesive Joint, Gefu Ji Jan 2010

Effects Of Bondline Thickness On Nonlinear Interfacial Fracture Of Bonded Adhesive Joint, Gefu Ji

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A number of existing and emerging industrial applications are dependent on layered substrates through adhesive bonding. The interfacial fracture of adhesively bonded structures is a critical issue for its extensive applications to a variety of modern industries. In the recent two decades, cohesive zone models (CZMs) have been receiving intensive attentions for fracture problems of adhesively bonded joints due to its fairly simple and accurate predictive ability. In CZMs the nonlinear interfacial fracture behaviors are described by the traction-separation laws (also referred to as cohesive laws). The cohesive laws represent the local constitutive behavior, instead of the global parameter, such …
