Phosphate Post-Treatment Of Cerium-Based Conversion Coatings On Al 2024-T3, Daimon K. Heller Jan 2010

Phosphate Post-Treatment Of Cerium-Based Conversion Coatings On Al 2024-T3, Daimon K. Heller

Doctoral Dissertations

"Phosphate post-treatment of cerium-based conversion coatings (CeCCs) on high strength aluminum alloys can significantly improve corrosion resistance. As-deposited CeCCs exhibit corrosion pits and salt tails across the specimen surface after 3 days of exposure, but post-treated CeCCs have withstood 14 days of salt spray exposure without visibly corroding. The morphology, phase, and electrochemical properties of spray deposited CeCCs were affected by post-treatment parameters such as immersion time, solution temperature, and phosphate source. The best performing coatings were post-treated in aqueous orthophosphate solutions for at least 5 min at temperatures of at least 85⁰C. These conditions converted cerium hydroxy/peroxy species in …

An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Corporate Communication During Large-Scale Information Technology Changes, Dawna M. Drum Jan 2010

An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Corporate Communication During Large-Scale Information Technology Changes, Dawna M. Drum

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The success rate of information technology implementations remains low, despite decades of scholarly research and popular advice. Whether success is defined by spending within the budget, on-time completion, functionality of the final implementation, or satisfaction of the users, few projects are deemed to be complete and resounding successes. One possible reason is inadequate communication during the change process, and many studies have examined aspects of change communication such as media choice, message content, and timing of the messages. What has been missing, however, is an assessment of these items‟ effectiveness across hierarchical levels within an organization undergoing an important technology …

A Study Of Selection, Training, And Host Country Cultural Adaptation Experiences Of Expatriate Faculty From United States Aascu Universities, Mark Gabriel Fenton Jan 2010

A Study Of Selection, Training, And Host Country Cultural Adaptation Experiences Of Expatriate Faculty From United States Aascu Universities, Mark Gabriel Fenton

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Literature addressing selection, cross-cultural training and determinants of a successful or failed expatriate experience is extensive for those in business, but there is little research on these topics for professional academics. This research expands the understanding of why academics expatriate, how they were selected, what their perceptions of a successful experience are, what pre-departure cultural training they received, and what factors may have been difficult. Expatriates are professionals who live and work in a foreign country. This status study of male and female faculty from two AASCU universities expands knowledge on academic expatriation. The response rate was 54%. Independent sample …

Destination Competitiveness: An Analysis Of The Characteristics To Differentiate All-Inclusive Hotels & Island Destinations In The Caribbean, Leiseth Chambers

Theses

Purpose - Tourism is the mainstay of most islands within the Caribbean encompassing a great segment of their services industry. However, despite increasing maturity in the research literature about destination competitiveness, analyzing it from the hospitality professional's perspective remains a novel concept in research for destinations in the Caribbean region. In light of this, the purpose of this study is to identify the distinguishing factors determining the competitiveness of Small Island Destinations within the Caribbean. Specifically, the research examined the features, experiences and strategies that all-inclusive hotels and resorts use to differentiate themselves from other properties within their island and …

Before It Rains, Veronica O. Parkman

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him should not parish but have everlasting life." Contemporary Christian literature is becoming first choice in public libraries and bookstores throughout the country. From novels about end-time prophesy to autobiographies of world-renowned pastors, works written for and about Christians have reached an all-time high. Before it Rains is indeed, according to the scriptural definition of salvation found in the King James Version of the bible, a contemporary Christian novel; the characters must go through the biblical process of accepting Jesus Christ as their …

Transgenic Manipulation In Zebra Fish By Combination Of Cre-Loxp Recombinant System, Tol2 Transposon System, And Rnai Technique, Yang Bai Jan 2010

Transgenic Manipulation In Zebra Fish By Combination Of Cre-Loxp Recombinant System, Tol2 Transposon System, And Rnai Technique, Yang Bai

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The overall goal of this research is to make precisely controlled transgene constructs to target genes in zebrafish and facilitate their functional studies. Many of the previous transgenic techniques (e.g. morpholino) can only produce transient gene expression or inhibition, which is not good for long-term studies. Also, transgenes that randomly integrate into the chromosomes are typically difficult to control and are poorly regulated. Thus, it would be of great benefit to develop a reversibly controlled transgenic tool to help study gene function. Here, we propose to combine three distinct techniques to generate a stable transgenic tool to facilitate gene functional …

Stay At Home Fathers: The New Gender Benders, Jessica Fischer Jan 2010

Stay At Home Fathers: The New Gender Benders, Jessica Fischer

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study compared the gender roles and attitudes toward women‟s and men‟s social roles of stay at home fathers and employed fathers recruited on the Internet. The relationship between gender roles and attitudes toward women‟s and men‟s social roles on reasons for becoming a stay at home father were also investigated. It was predicted that stay at home fathers would endorse more traditionally feminine characteristics for themselves and would have more nontraditional attitudes toward men‟s and women‟s social roles than employed fathers. In addition, it was predicted that fathers who choose to stay at home for practical reasons (i.e. lost …

Perception Of Control: Accuracy Among Optimists And Pessimists On Noncontingency And Contingengy Tasks, Spencer Baum Jan 2010

Perception Of Control: Accuracy Among Optimists And Pessimists On Noncontingency And Contingengy Tasks, Spencer Baum

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The learned helplessness theory asserts that depressed individuals unrealistically believe that they have little to no control over aversive outcomes in their lives. Paradoxically, research on judgment of control has demonstrated that depressed individuals are not necessarily pessimistic, but rather more realistic than non-depressed individuals. Most of the research on depressive realism has investigated individual's perceived control in situations in which they have no actual control. Few studies have investigated perception of control in situations where control is possible. Considering that many circumstances in life are controllable, it is important to examine how different personality variables contribute to accurate judgments …

Impact Of Leadership Program On Personality Characteristics Of At-Risk Youth, Aashia M. Bade Jan 2010

Impact Of Leadership Program On Personality Characteristics Of At-Risk Youth, Aashia M. Bade

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The use of leadership programs as interventions for at-risk youths has recently gained attention in popular media and psychology literature. This type of intervention presupposes that changes in personality style as well as developmental assets can be cultivated through leadership programming. Although current literature supports the benefits of mentoring and increased community involvement for at risk youths, there is limited research available about personality changes that may occur as a result of participation in leadership programs. The present study focuses on the C5 program, a five-year leadership program for at-risk youths from inner-city areas. A cross-sectional design sampling from participants …

Participants completed the mental health portion of the Post-Deployment Health Re-Assessment and an additional questionnaire in which the effect of a drug use screen was explored. Subjects were also asked about their intentions to seek mental health or substance abuse treatment and how anonymity affected their treatment seeking and reporting accuracy. Results indicate similar and at times higher rates of mental health problems in the sample of college …

Social Class Experiences Of Working-Class Students: Transitioning Out Of College, Huber Carey Treager Jan 2010

Social Class Experiences Of Working-Class Students: Transitioning Out Of College, Huber Carey Treager

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Issues surrounding social class are often overlooked and rarely discussed in higherEducation; however, they affect students and institutions in critical ways. Although research has demonstrated that social class is a predictor of access to college, retention, academic performance, overall undergraduate and graduate experience, and college completion, little is known about the effect of social class on students' transition out of college and into the workplace. This transition is critical to explore because research suggests that the way in which students approach their first years of work have an impact on future job success and satisfaction. A phenomenological method of inquiry …

The Relationship Of Depression With Intrinsic And Extrinsic Components Of Religiosity In The Older Adult Female, Jacqueline Anne Nuval

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this doctoral research was to determine whether religious activity and general health would predict depression in older adult women living alone in the community who are widowed, divorced, separated, or never married. Variables considered included intrinsic and extrinsic components of religiosity, level of depression, anxiety and panic attacks, general health, and a group of behaviors classified as Religious Attitudes and Behaviors (RAB), which considered importance of religion, religious participation, regularity of religious observance, and religious organization/social support. Components of extrinsic religiosity and intrinsic religiosity were measured by Intrinsic/Extrinsic – Revised (I/E-R). Levels of depression were measured by …

The Religious Spirituality Of An Indiana Public School Leader And Its Influence On The School, Peters Timothy St. Jan 2010

The Religious Spirituality Of An Indiana Public School Leader And Its Influence On The School, Peters Timothy St.

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As schools expand secularization and laws limiting religious expression increase, one must not forget the religious spirituality of the individual. Individual religious spirituality is still protected under the United States Constitution. Many researchers feel that this religious spirituality should be nurtured, not discouraged in public schools. Multiple studies seen in the literature review show that spiritual and religious commitment directly leads to increased academic success and decreased risk taking behaviors in students. The school leader has the ability to encourage, foster, and enrich religious spirituality in students while following established law regarding the separation of church and state. All along, …

Theory Of Island Biogeography On A Microscopic Scale: Organic Aggregates As Islands For Aquatic Pathogens, M. M. Lyons, J. E. Ward, Holly Gaff, R. E. Hicks, J. M. Drake, Fred C. Dobbs Jan 2010

Theory Of Island Biogeography On A Microscopic Scale: Organic Aggregates As Islands For Aquatic Pathogens, M. M. Lyons, J. E. Ward, Holly Gaff, R. E. Hicks, J. M. Drake, Fred C. Dobbs

OES Faculty Publications

Four predictions of the MacArthur-Wilson theory of island biogeography were evaluated to assess the degree to which detrital-based organic aggregates (e.g. marine snow, organic detritus, and bioflocs) may provide a favorable microhabitat (i.e. an 'island') for bacteria in general, and specifically aquatic pathogens. We demonstrate the theory's relevance for microbial communities in aquatic environments by describing the community metabolic response and functional diversity of individual organic aggregates while documenting the persistence of potential pathogens and fecal indicator bacteria. Our results support the 4 predictions, including a significant species-area relationship, consistency of species richness at equilibrium, non-zero level of species turnover …
