The Knowing-Doing Gap: The Influence Of Teacher Feedback In Changing Principal Behavior - A Mixed Methods Study, Kimberly St. Martin Dec 2010

The Knowing-Doing Gap: The Influence Of Teacher Feedback In Changing Principal Behavior - A Mixed Methods Study, Kimberly St. Martin

Dissertations

This mixed methods study attempted to determine how a system of regular feedback from teachers on principal's work influenced the way in which two principals incorporated the 21 Leadership Responsibilities into their daily practice. Since Principals are the front line of school reform, even when a school commits to an improvement effort that is well grounded in research such as Response to Intervention (Rtl), the principal plays a key role in leading the change of adapting the school processes, culture, roles and responsibilities, norms, and systems to support implementation. To play this role effectively, the principal often finds it necessary …

Wiki Vandalysis. Wikipedia Vandalism Analysis, Manoj Harpalani

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Wikipedia describes itself as"The free encyclopedia that anyone canedit". Along with the helpful volunteers who contribute by improving the articles, a great number of malicious users abuse the open nature of Wikipedia by vandalizing articles. Wikipedia editors fight vandalism both manually and with automated bots that use regular expressions and other simple rules to recognize malicious edits[Carter]. Researchers have also proposed Machine Learning algorithms for vandalism detection[Smets et al. | 2008; Potthast et al. | 2008a], but these algorithms are still in their infancy and have much room for improvement. This paper presents an approach to fighting vandalism using natural …

Generation Of Conformation Sensor Recombinant Antibodies To Understand Redox Regulation Of Ptp1b, Aftabul Haque Dec 2010

Generation Of Conformation Sensor Recombinant Antibodies To Understand Redox Regulation Of Ptp1b, Aftabul Haque

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) plays important roles in down-regulation of insulin signaling. Although it has been established as a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of diabetes and obesity, the finding of pharmaceutically acceptable inhibitors remains challenging. PTP1B is regulated by reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced in response to insulin. The reversibly oxidized form of this enzyme (PTP1B-OX) is inhibited and undergoes profound conformational changes at the active site. We hypothesized that a conformation-sensor antibody that recognizes PTP1B-OX may stabilize the inactive state and inhibit phosphatase activity. We isolated PTP1B-OX-specific single chain variable fragments (scFvs) from an antibody phage …

Fair Use Challenges In Academic And Research Libraries, Peter Jaszi Dec 2010

Fair Use Challenges In Academic And Research Libraries, Peter Jaszi

Copyright, Fair Use & Open Access

Academic and research libraries are key players in the generation and propagation of knowledge in the U.S., and their interpretation of the balancing features of copyright is critical to the quality of research, teaching, and learning they support. Approaches and methods for research, teaching, and learning are changing rapidly with opportunities presented by digitization and Internet communication. Academic and research librarians need and use the balancing features of copyright—including exemptions listed in Sections 108 and 110 of the Copyright Act, as well as fair use (codified in Section 107)—in order to accomplish the routine tasks of their profession. This report …

Dynamic Climatologic Processes Of Barometric Cave Systems Using The Example Of Jewel Cave And Wind Cave In South Dakota, Usa, Andreas Pflitsch, Mike Wiles, Rdney Horrocks Dec 2010

Dynamic Climatologic Processes Of Barometric Cave Systems Using The Example Of Jewel Cave And Wind Cave In South Dakota, Usa, Andreas Pflitsch, Mike Wiles, Rdney Horrocks

KIP Articles

Jewel and Wind Cave are two big barometric cave systems in SouthDakota, USA. The entrances of Jewel and Wind Cave are roughly 50 km apart, and until now it is unknown whether their entrances belong to two separate caves or to one muchlarger cave system. One possibility for testing these two competing hypotheses is to measure and analyse the climatic conditions in the vicinity of these entrances and within the caves in detail. In this context, the thermal conditions and air currents are crucial. These in turn can be characterised by the spatial and temporal patterns of the dynamics of …

Dodging A Bullet: Mcdonald V. City Of Chicago And The Limits Of Progessive Originalism, Dale E. Ho Dec 2010

Dodging A Bullet: Mcdonald V. City Of Chicago And The Limits Of Progessive Originalism, Dale E. Ho

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

The Supreme Court’s decision in last term’s gun rights case, McDonald v. City of Chicago, punctured the conventional wisdom after District of Columbia v. Heller that “we are all originalists now.” Surprisingly, many progressive academics were disappointed. For “progressive originalists,” McDonald was a missed opportunity to overrule the Slaughter-House Cases and to revitalize the Privileges or Immunities Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. In their view, such a ruling could have realigned progressive constitutional achievements with originalism and relieved progressives of the albatross of substantive due process, while also unlocking long-dormant constitutional text to serve as the source of new unenumerated …

Expression Of Functional Bacterial Undecaprenyl Pyrophosphate Synthase In The Yeast Rer2{Delta} Mutant And Cho Cells., Jeffrey S. Rush, Sergey Matveev, Ziqiang Guan, Christian R H Raetz, C J Waechter

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

During evolution the average chain length of polyisoprenoid glycosyl carrier lipids increased from C55 (prokaryotes) to C75 (yeast) to C95 (mammalian cells). In this study, the ability of the E. coli enzyme, undecaprenyl pyrophosphate synthase (UPPS), to complement the loss of the yeast cis-isoprenyltransferase in the rer2Δ mutant was tested to determine if (55)dolichyl phosphate (Dol-P) could functionally substitute in the protein N-glycosylation pathway for (75)Dol-P, the normal isoprenologue synthesized in S. cerevisiae. First, expression of UPPS in the yeast mutant was found to complement the growth and the hypoglycosylation of carboxypeptidase Y defects suggesting that the (55)polyprenyl-P-P intermediate was …

Integrating Ioob And Jdm Through Process-Oriented Research, Jochen Reb

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

One of the most fascinating and counterintuitive insights from negotiation theory is that differences, rather than similarities, open up opportunities for value creation (Raiffa, 2002). Because of different values, beliefs, and perspectives, parties can benefit from their complementarities. Ironically though, negotiators tend to prefer negotiating with similar others, with others they like, presumably because negotiators expect interactions to proceed more smoothly. Differences make interaction more difficult but also potentially more rewarding, if managed correctly.

Measurement Equivalence Of The Wong And Law Emotional Intelligence Scale Across Self And Other Ratings, Nele Libbrecht, Filip Lievens, Eveline Schollaert Dec 2010

Measurement Equivalence Of The Wong And Law Emotional Intelligence Scale Across Self And Other Ratings, Nele Libbrecht, Filip Lievens, Eveline Schollaert

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

There exist a variety of measurement instruments for assessing emotional intelligence (EI). One approach is the use of other reports wherein knowledgeable informants indicate how well the scale items describe the assessed person's behavior. In other reports, the same EI scales are typically used as in self-reports. However, it is not known whether the measurement structure underlying EI ratings is equivalent across self and other ratings. In this study, the measurement equivalence of an extant EI measure (Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale [WLEIS]) across self and other ratings was tested. Using multiple group confirmatory factor analysis, the authors conducted …

On The Robustness Of The Positive Relation Between Expected Idiosyncratic Volatility And Expected Return, Fangjian Fu Dec 2010

On The Robustness Of The Positive Relation Between Expected Idiosyncratic Volatility And Expected Return, Fangjian Fu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

My 2009 JFE paper ["Idiosyncratic Risk and the Cross-Section of Expected Stock Returns', Journal of Financial Economics, Vol. 91, pp. 24-37] documents a positive and statistically significant cross-sectional relation between expected idiosyncratic volatility (E(IVOL)) and expected stock return. A recent working paper titled "On the Relation between EGARCH Idiosyncratic Volatility and Expected Stock Returns" by Guo, Ferguson, and Kassa of University of Cincinnati suggests that the positive relation is driven by an in-sample approach to estimate E(IVOL). They fail to find a significant relation between return and their E(IVOL) estimated out of sample. I find that two estimation settings in …

Mineta Transportation Institute

The U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics conducts a nationwide census of ferry boat operators for the U.S. Department of Transportation and the collected information is used for statistical purposes. The Caltrans Division of Local Assistance has been asked by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to gather data regarding ferry operations under MAP-21, the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act. MAP-21 includes a new formula program for ferry boats and ferry terminal facilities eligible under 23 USC 129(c) which authorizes federal participation in toll roads, bridges, tunnels, and ferries. FHWA has asked that Caltrans assure the ferry boat …

Measuring Walking And Cycling Using The Pabs (Pedestrian And Bicycling Survey) Approach: A Low-Cost Survey Method For Local Communities, Ann Forsyth Dec 2010

Measuring Walking And Cycling Using The Pabs (Pedestrian And Bicycling Survey) Approach: A Low-Cost Survey Method For Local Communities, Ann Forsyth

Mineta Transportation Institute

To tackle the problems of greenhouse gas emissions, traffic congestion, resident quality of life, and public health concerns, communities are using initiatives to spur more walking and cycling. As local governments face hard choices about which programs to fund, decision makers, planners, and residents seek to understand if proposed policies to increase bicycling and walking—modes referred to as “active travel”— actually work. However, most communities have unreliable means to know how many active travel trips occur in their jurisdictions, let alone how the numbers may change over time. This project developed a low-budget survey method and related sampling strategy for …

Integrated Approach For The Assessment And Development Of Groundwater Resources In Arid Lands: Applications In The Quetta Valley, Pakistan, Zhanay Sagintayev

Dissertations

The lack of adequate field measurements (e.g., precipitation and stream flow) and difficulty in obtaining them often hampers the construction and calibration of rainfall-runoff models over many of the world's watersheds, leaving key· elements of the hydrologic cycle unconstrained. I adopted methodologies that rely heavily on readily available remote sensing datasets as viable alternatives and useful tools for assessing, managing, and modeling the water resources of such remote and inadequately gauged regions.

The Soil and Water Assessment Tool was selected for continuous (1998-2005) rainfall-runoff modeling of the northeast part of the Pishin Lora basin (NEPL), a politically unstable area that …

New Energy Geopolitics?: China, Renewable Energy, And The "Greentech Race", Joel B. Eisen Dec 2010

New Energy Geopolitics?: China, Renewable Energy, And The "Greentech Race", Joel B. Eisen

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Commentators believe that programs in China promoting development of new renewable energy capacity have produced astonishing achievements in a short period of time. Evoking the "space race" between the United States and the U.S.S.R. after the launch of the Sputnik satellite in 1957, observers contend that the United States and China are in a "greentech race" to secure international leadership in the development and deployment of renewable energy. As U.S. Energy Secretary Chu has put it, many believe this is a modern "Sputnik moment." This Article finds that China's programs and initiatives are indeed leading to considerable success, but, using …

The Art Of Subsidizing Fuel-Free Electricity Under The European Economic Area Agreement As Illustrated By Norway's Reversion Instrument, Peter Ørebech Dec 2010

The Art Of Subsidizing Fuel-Free Electricity Under The European Economic Area Agreement As Illustrated By Norway's Reversion Instrument, Peter Ørebech

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The purpose of this article is to scrutinize legal barriers to state aid instruments in transforming fuel-based electricity into renewable energy, the subsidy prerequisites by which the national state may champion fuel free power production. Subsidy is illustrated by the 2004 Official Norwegian Report's (NOU) disapproval of the Norwegian Reversion Institute (NRI), as a result of a waiver clause to the benefit of municipal power plants. A licensing period of sixty years is final. Relicensing is not possible; only private leasing may occur.

As outlined, my basic criticism is that the NOU confuses interstate distortion of competition as it is …

Smart-Grid: Technology And The Psychology Of Environmental Behavior Change, Stephanie M. Stern Dec 2010

Smart-Grid: Technology And The Psychology Of Environmental Behavior Change, Stephanie M. Stern

Chicago-Kent Law Review

There is a schism in the legal scholarship between scholars who argue that value, norm, and information campaigns can induce pro-environmental behavior and those who contend that structural, psychological, and social forces sharply constrain behavior change. Both sides of this debate have neglected the critical and ever-increasing role of technology in addressing residential pollution. The example of electricity "smart grids" illustrates how technology engineered to override cognitive and behavioral limitations can comprehensively reduce household consumption and emissions. Electricity conservation suffers from multiple barriers to collective action, including large numbers of geographically dispersed polluters, low financial payoffs, and, the contribution of …

The Legal-Political Barriers To Ramping Up To Hydro, Dan Tarlock Dec 2010

The Legal-Political Barriers To Ramping Up To Hydro, Dan Tarlock

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Hydroelectric energy is the oldest major source of non-carbon, renewable energy and is the only conventional renewable resource in the current energy mix. Increased hydro capacity would seem to be a key element of any United States energy policy designed to promote the greater use of renewable resources. However, for several decades hydro has been perceived as a mature, fully developed technology. This article argues that any effort to stimulate substantial new hydro capacity will face a series of environmental legal and policy constraints. Efforts to adapt to global climate change will further complicate efforts to increase hydro electric generation. …
