Entropy In Two American Road Narratives, Sean Deskin Dec 2010

Entropy In Two American Road Narratives, Sean Deskin

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Tony Tanner's book City of Words analyzes American literature from 1950-1970; in the chapter entitled "Everything Running Down" the theme of entropy, the second law of thermodynamics, is explored and revealed to be a common motif within many works of American literature. Tanner's analysis does not specifically address the presence of entropy within the genre of the American road narrative; when considering his analysis presented in "Everything Running Down" with Kris Lackey's analysis of American road narratives presented in his book RoadFrames, the presence of entropy and how it is applied within the American road narrative becomes apparent. Although Jack …

Survey Of Bicycle Trail-Users In New Orleans: Characteristics, Attitudes And Implications For Planning, Coleen Judge

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on bicyclists using the Jefferson Davis multi-use, off-street trail in the City of New Orleans. Understanding user characteristics and perceptions of bicyclists will help inform planning, policy, and design related to bicycle infrastructure. This thesis uses a review of the relevant literature, intercept surveys of bicyclists, and automatic bicycle counts to understand how user characteristics can influence successful bicycle design, policies, and planning. The user characteristics of the bicyclists on the Jefferson Davis Trail provide us with information on who is using the trail, how often, why, and what users would like to see improved. Planners need …

Connecting Religion And Work: Patterns And Influences Of Work-Faith Integration, Monty Lynn, Michael J. Naughton, Steve Vanderveen Dec 2010

Connecting Religion And Work: Patterns And Influences Of Work-Faith Integration, Monty Lynn, Michael J. Naughton, Steve Vanderveen

Management Sciences

Religiosity can significantly impact human behavior yet little is known about how religious belief and practice integrate with work. Using the Faith at Work Scale, we surveyed Christian workers in the United States (n = 374) and found that work-faith integration was positively associated with faith maturity, church attendance, age and denominational strictness, and negatively associated with organizational size. Denominational groups varied in their degree of integration but displayed similar patterns across dimensions of integration.Work-faith integration was manifest most strongly in integration related to the self, and somewhat less so in areas related to others and in transcendent aspects of …

Understanding Bullying Participant Roles: Stability Across School Years And Personality And Behavioral Correlates, Ann Crapanzano Dec 2010

Understanding Bullying Participant Roles: Stability Across School Years And Personality And Behavioral Correlates, Ann Crapanzano

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the factorial validity, stability, and social, behavioral and emotional correlates of several different roles that students can play in the context of bullying. Data were collected from students at two time points across two school years, April and May of 2006 (n=284) and again in November and December of 2006 (n=185). A confirmatory factor analysis provided evidence for the validity of 4 participant roles (i.e. bully, reinforcer, assistant, and defender). However, further analysis revealed that there was a strong degree of intercorrelation between the three bully factors (i.e., bully, reinforcer, and assistant). Analyses found that participant roles …

Barely There Tales: A Phenomenological Study Of Stories Told By Pre-Service Teachers, Cynthia Ybos Dec 2010

Barely There Tales: A Phenomenological Study Of Stories Told By Pre-Service Teachers, Cynthia Ybos

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Teacher stories were once relegated to informal gatherings but more recently this aspect of teacher development is being carefully studied in more formalized settings because it is believed to be an important part of teacher development. New ways are being sought to use various aspects of storytelling to help pre-service teachers develop important teaching skills through reflection on experience, dialogue journals, case studies and autobiography. Despite these efforts at the university level, it is especially difficult for pre-service teachers to integrate and apply theories from their methods courses to actual classroom practice. Less effort has been focused on storytelling processes …

Place Matters: An Evolutionary Approach To Annie Proulx's "The Half-Skinned Steer"And "Wamsutter Wolf", Erin Walker Dec 2010

Place Matters: An Evolutionary Approach To Annie Proulx's "The Half-Skinned Steer"And "Wamsutter Wolf", Erin Walker

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In Annie Proulx's interview with Charlie Rose, she states that her stories come "from place." Ecocriticism has been the predominant lens with which to understand Proulx's work; however, ecocriticism's nebulous tenets and theoretical deficiencies perpetuate sentimental pastoralism of geographical determinism. The shaping impact of Wyoming's environment in Proulx's work lends itself to an evolutionary perspective. Proulx's fiction, like evolutionary theory, examines humanity's unique, reciprocal relationship with nature. The evolutionary approach provides readers with a framework to understand the human relationship to our environment, a theme Proulx's work examines. This approach also augments current criticism that notes the importance of place …

Exploring Narcissism, Psychopathy, And Machiavellianism In Youth: An Examination Of Associations With Antisocial Behavior And Aggression, Katherine S. L. Lau

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to explore the differential associations of CU traits, narcissistic traits, and Machiavellian traits with overt aggression, relational aggression, delinquency, behavioral dysregulation, and emotional dysregulation in a community sample of boys and girls (ages 11-17). Results indicated that the three personality traits were significantly correlated with each other, yet distinct. CU traits, narcissistic traits, and Machiavellian traits demonstrated different unique associations with behavior problems. Specifically, narcissistic traits showed the strongest unique associations with overt aggression, relational aggression, behavioral dysregulation, and emotional dysregulation. CU traits showed the second strongest unique associations with overt aggression, delinquency and behavioral dysregulation, but …

The Effects Of Rhes On Opioid Analgesia, Franklin Lee Dec 2010

The Effects Of Rhes On Opioid Analgesia, Franklin Lee

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Rhes (Ras homolog enriched in striatum) has been identified as a novel monomeric G-protein involved in dopaminergic and other signaling in the striatum. Given the many effects of opioids that involve striatal circuitry, genetically engineered mice that are incapable of making Rhes (rhes-/-) and their control littermates (rhes+/+) were subjected to behavioral tests to determine if any differences existed in opioid analgesia, tolerance, withdrawal, reward, and locomotion. Rhes-/- mice showed an increased opioid mediated analgesia, along with an absence of tolerance and decrease in withdrawal when compared with rhes+/+ littermates. However, no significant changes were seen in opioid induced locomotor …

An Examination Of Faculty Satisfaction At Two-Year Higher Education Institutions, Nancy Kinchen Dec 2010

An Examination Of Faculty Satisfaction At Two-Year Higher Education Institutions, Nancy Kinchen

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Part-time faculty members represent the majority of faculty at public two-year postsecondary institutions. Utilizing part-time faculty enables two-year institutions to control their instructional costs and maintain scheduling flexibility. However, part-time faculty are diverse in regards to their employment preference, some prefer part-time employment while others would prefer a full-time position. Since retaining and attracting qualified and experienced part-time faculty members is essential, it is imperative that their satisfaction be understood. This study uses the 2004 National Study of Postsecondary Faculty (NSOPF: 04) to study faculty satisfaction. Faculty was disaggregated according to employment preference into full-time, involuntary part-time, and voluntary part-time …

Resilience Characteristics Of Master's-Level Counseling Students, J. Raul Machuca Dec 2010

Resilience Characteristics Of Master's-Level Counseling Students, J. Raul Machuca

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Resilience characteristics typically have been studied among children and adolescents. A new line of research on resilience is focused on exploring the resilience characteristics of adults exposed to short and long-term adversity. In the present study, 585 master's-level counseling students responded to the Resilience Scale (Wagnild & Young, 1993). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between counseling students' level of resilience and specific background variables (age, gender, marital status, ethnicity, education, income, employment, living situation, sexual orientation, and country of origin), counselor-education program variables (primary field of study, number of credits taken, academic status, professional affiliations, …

Sensation Seeking And A Real World Stressor: Endocrine And Physiological Effects, Amber Allison Dec 2010

Sensation Seeking And A Real World Stressor: Endocrine And Physiological Effects, Amber Allison

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

We attempted to identify the psychobiological mechanisms that mediate the process by which the sensation seeking trait culminates in behavior. We used the Sensation Seeking Scales to assess the SS trait in individuals who expressed a desire to skydive. We obtained measures of autonomic (heart rate) and endocrine (salivary cortisol) activity before, during and after skydiving. To distinguish the contribution of novelty, we compared novices (N=29) to experienced jumpers (N=15). All jumpers exhibited HPA-axis activation; novices exhibited a prolonged response and more extreme peak in cortisol compared to experienced jumpers, suggesting that novelty contributes to an intense pattern of stress …

Assessing The Psychosocial Needs Of Individuals Diagnosed With Cancer, By Age And Sex On Interest In Support Group Attendance, Mary Rodrigue Dec 2010

Assessing The Psychosocial Needs Of Individuals Diagnosed With Cancer, By Age And Sex On Interest In Support Group Attendance, Mary Rodrigue

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

There are several psychosocial factors that can affect an individual diagnosed with cancer (Holland, 2003), and directly addressing these issues with patients is important for their overall care and quality of life (Holland, 1998). The practice of psycho-oncology has been designed to assess these psychosocial issues with patients and their caregivers by means of outlets such as support groups to facilitate a wellness model of care (Myers & Sweeney, 2008). Using the demographics of age and sex, I plan to analyze and identify what psychosocial needs are significant to individuals diagnosed with cancer, and compare the sex and age of …

Effects Of Brain Injury Severity And Effort On Neuropsychological Tests Of Attention, Brian Guise

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Attention impairment is one of the most common complaints following Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Multiple studies have shown that performance on neuropsychological tests of attention is affected by many factors, including injury severity and effort. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of injury severity on neuropsychological tests across different domains of attention while controlling for effort. The domains of focused attention, selective attention, divided attention, sustained attention, and working memory were assessed by performance on the Digit Span Forward subtest, the Stroop Color Word Test, the Trail Making Test, the Conners' Continuous Performance Test - II, …

The Facets Of Hostile Attributional Bias: The Importance Of Aggression Subtypes And Provocateur Motivation, Melissa Kunimatsu Dec 2010

The Facets Of Hostile Attributional Bias: The Importance Of Aggression Subtypes And Provocateur Motivation, Melissa Kunimatsu

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The current study examined the association of hostile attributional bias (HAB) with the functions (proactive and reactive) and subtypes (reactive relational and reactive overt) of aggression as well as with perceived provocateur motivation (proactive or reactive) in a high school sample (mean age = 16.51; 50% male; 31% Caucasian). Revisions to a measure of HAB were made both in administration (adding animations/narration) and content (adding perceived provocateur motivation questions). Results indicated that the animation/narration measure showed comparable internal consistency reliability to the written and displayed an increased ability to predict total aggression. However, a unique relationship between HAB and reactive …

Costs Of Treating Depression With Individual Versus Family Therapy, Sareta Dobbs Head Dec 2010

Costs Of Treating Depression With Individual Versus Family Therapy, Sareta Dobbs Head

Theses and Dissertations

Marital discord contributes to the development and continuation of depression and to the recurrence of depressive episodes for those in troubled relationships. Early research suggests that family therapy may reduce the severity and frequency of depressive episodes through modification of family interactional patterns. This would result in a reduction in the cost of treating depression. This study summarizes the literature linking family dynamics with depression. Then, using a sample taken from a large health maintenance organization, data was statistically analyzed to measure the effectiveness of both individual and family therapy as delivered by different types of mental health professionals. Results indicated …

The Effect Of Raters And Rating Conditions On The Reliability Of The Missionary Teaching Assessment, Abigail Christine Ure Dec 2010

The Effect Of Raters And Rating Conditions On The Reliability Of The Missionary Teaching Assessment, Abigail Christine Ure

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated how 2 different rating conditions, the controlled rating condition (CRC) and the uncontrolled rating condition (URC), effected rater behavior and the reliability of a performance assessment (PA) known as the Missionary Teaching Assessment (MTA). The CRC gives raters the capability to manipulate (pause, rewind, fast-forward) video recordings of an examinee's performance as they rate while the URC does not give them this capability (i.e., the rater must watch the recording straight through without making any manipulations). Few studies have compared the effect of these two rating conditions on ratings. Ryan et al. (1995) analyzed the impact of …

The Effects Of Using Clinical Support Tools To Prevent Treatment Failure, Tiffany K. Washington Dec 2010

The Effects Of Using Clinical Support Tools To Prevent Treatment Failure, Tiffany K. Washington

Theses and Dissertations

To date, outcome research suggests that providing clinicians with patient progress feedback and problem-solving tools is effective in improving therapeutic outcome for clients who are predicted to have a negative treatment outcome. To expand upon this body of research, the current study examined the efficacy of using these problem-solving tools (Clinical Support Tools; CST) to reduce the risk of treatment failure and enhance positive outcome with 118 clients who were not identified as at -risk for a negative outcome. Results of this study indicated that the intervention failed to lower the rate of becoming an at-risk case or to enhance …

Multivariate Cluster Analysis Of The Mmpi-2 And Mmpi-2-Rf Scales In Spine Pain Patients With Financial Compensation: Characterization And Validation Of Chronic Pain Subgroups, Luis Aguerrevere Dec 2010

Multivariate Cluster Analysis Of The Mmpi-2 And Mmpi-2-Rf Scales In Spine Pain Patients With Financial Compensation: Characterization And Validation Of Chronic Pain Subgroups, Luis Aguerrevere

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Different psychosocial factors influence the experience and adaptation to pain. Previous cluster analytic studies using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2nd edition described psychologically different subgroups of pain patients that had been shown valuable in determining outcome. However, these studies had limited applicability to medico-legal pain populations because they did not use newly developed scales or describe important medico-legal factors that have large effects on symptom endorsement. Using three methods of clustering, the current investigation explored the subgroups that resulted when using all the MMPI-2 and the newly developed MMPI-2-RF (Restructured Form) scales on a large and well-described population of medico-legal …

The Relationship Between Professional Identity And Collective Self- Esteem In School Counselors, Susan Foster Dec 2010

The Relationship Between Professional Identity And Collective Self- Esteem In School Counselors, Susan Foster

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

All bona fide professions have affiliated professional organizations, ethical standards or a code of ethics, and an accrediting and sanctioning body that deals with preparation, credentialing, and licensure, and pride in one's profession (Gale & Austin, 2003; Remley & Herlihy, 2010). As school counseling continues to evolve, school counselors have struggled to define and maintain their role. This may be due, in part, to the social desirability an individual has to belong to dominant group in the school setting (Tajfel, 1986). School counselors may draw esteem from their professional membership. This concept, called collective self-esteem, denotes those aspects of identity …

Crisis: Capitalism, Economics And The Environment, Raj Navanit Patel Mr Dec 2010

Crisis: Capitalism, Economics And The Environment, Raj Navanit Patel Mr

Undergraduate Economic Review

The basic thesis of this paper is that there is an undeniable tension between maximization of individual welfare and a sustainable and healthy environment in a finite world. Following from this, the further claim is that our current capitalist system of private production and ownership is fundamentally in tension with the environment and should be changed. Without a change in attitude toward our conceptualization of these problems, that is, without contextualizing these problems outside of the market-based solutions and free market solutions, crisis is inevitable. Homo economicus needs to be replaced by homo environmentus.

Left To My Own Devices, Charisse Celino Dec 2010

Left To My Own Devices, Charisse Celino

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

I compose work from what may be considered debris. There is a history contained within these items that I want to redefine. Materials dictate and inform the direction of my work. The search and discovery of these objects is intuitive. Acquiring the piece(s) ties into my inspiration of its possible new function. My objective is to encourage others to notice the everyday and see the aesthetic value of these objects. Often they are organized into a grid. Whether taking an individual object or making multiples into a single image, I am altering the function of these items, reordering them and …

Transformed migraine is one of the subtypes of chronic daily headache (CDH), and is similar to chronic migraine, described in the new International Headache Society (IHS) classification 2004. The term CDH refers to the Headache disorders experienced 15 or more days a month and includes headaches associated with medication overuse. CDH can be divided into primary and secondary varieties. Primary CDH is not related to a structural or systemic illness. It includes diseases such as Transformed migraine (TM). Chronic tension-type headache (CTTH), new daily persistent headache (NDPH), and hemicrania continua (HC). Secondary CDH has an identifiable underlying cause, including post-traumatic …

Resident Teaching Expectations And Medical Student Feedback, Michael Ignatowski Dec 2010

Resident Teaching Expectations And Medical Student Feedback, Michael Ignatowski

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Objective Much of resident teaching of medical students occurs in an informal manner, with bedside teaching a common focus. Hence, the ability to monitor such teaching is limited. Feedback about how students perceive the teaching is perhaps one way to more effectively monitor and influence resident teaching.
