An Assessment Of The Use Of Chimpanzees In Hepatitis C Research Past, Present And Future: 2. Alternative Replacement Methods, Jarrod Bailey
An Assessment Of The Use Of Chimpanzees In Hepatitis C Research Past, Present And Future: 2. Alternative Replacement Methods, Jarrod Bailey
Experimentation Collection
The use of chimpanzees in hepatitis C virus (HCV) research was examined in the report associated with this paper (1: Validity of the Chimpanzee Model), in which it was concluded that claims of past necessity of chimpanzee use were exaggerated, and that claims of current and future indispensability were unjustifiable. Furthermore, given the serious scientific and ethical issues surrounding chimpanzee experimentation, it was proposed that it must now be considered redundant — particularly in light of the demonstrable contribution of alternative methods to past and current scientific progress, and the future promise that these methods hold. This paper builds on …

Agribusiness
This study was undertaken to determine the price comparisons of selected produce between farmers' markets and grocery stores in San Luis Obispo County.
All data was collected through out an eight week period and recorded to determine if prices, on average, are lower at famers' markets compared to their neighboring grocery. This data was used to compare prices of commodities at farmers' markets and neighboring grocery stores in San Luis Obispo County for five selected produce items. The data collected includes prices of each commodity, location, and date. After collecting the data, the final step in determining if prices are …

Revolutionizing Literature: Anarchism In The Lives And Works Of Emma Goldman, Dorothy Day, And Bernard Shaw, Virginia Costello
Revolutionizing Literature: Anarchism In The Lives And Works Of Emma Goldman, Dorothy Day, And Bernard Shaw, Virginia Costello
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
My dissertation seeks both to discover and analyze a current of anarchism present in the autobiographies and other works of two early-twentieth-century radical and radically different women: Emma Goldman and Dorothy Day. Both activists sought to express their anarchism, not primarily through political theory or through anarchist political action but through an explicit form of living: their radicalism was an aesthetic anarchism in that they advocated and exemplified a practice of radical self-creation. For Goldman this meant she synthesized politics, sexuality, and aesthetic sensibility. In her lectures and essays she employed drama, particularly George Bernard Shaw's, to convey her anarchist …
A Quantitative Analysis Of Racial/Ethnic Disparities In Health Care Usage: The Roles Of Perceptions Of Care & Expected Longevity, Jeffrey Alfred Jones
A Quantitative Analysis Of Racial/Ethnic Disparities In Health Care Usage: The Roles Of Perceptions Of Care & Expected Longevity, Jeffrey Alfred Jones
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Countless studies have documented the existence of disparities byrace and ethnicity in the health care system in the United States. However, not many have sought to explicitly quantify the relativeimportance of each of the proposed determining factors. Thisdissertation thus sought to identify the major causes of disparitiesin health care usage by employing an adaptation of theBlinder/Oaxaca decomposition method originally used in theliterature on wage differentials.Specifically, this study sought to investigate the roles that racialdifferences in patients' perceptions of care and expected longevity(as they relate to expected gains) might play in the observeddisparities in usage. Perceptions of care measures (trust andfear/dislike) were …
Transnational Feminism And Gender-Based Violence: Exploring The Relationship Between Feminist Theory And V-Day, Molly Laura Boeder Harris
Transnational Feminism And Gender-Based Violence: Exploring The Relationship Between Feminist Theory And V-Day, Molly Laura Boeder Harris
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
This project explores the prevalence of gender-based violence around the globe, along with the ways in which women and groups are locally, nationally and globally collaborating to resist violence and provide opportunities for survivors to heal. Utilizing feminist theoretical approaches to understanding gender-based violence and cross-cultural organizing as a framework, I examine V-Day and the ways in which it has incorporated feminist practices, specfically transnational feminist practices, into its philosophy as well as its style of organizing and activism. Close attention is paid to understanding transnational feminism, intersectionality and diversity within feminisms, body-centered and empowerment approaches to healing trauma, as …
The Role Of Owner In Capital Structure Decisions: An Analysis Of Single-Owner Corporations, James Ang, Rebel Cole, Daniel Lawson
The Role Of Owner In Capital Structure Decisions: An Analysis Of Single-Owner Corporations, James Ang, Rebel Cole, Daniel Lawson
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
This study examines the extent to which individual demographic characteristics of owners influence capital structure desisions. Using the Federal Reserve's 2003 Survey of Small Business Finances, we estimate the joint effects of traditional capital structure determinants and manager age, gender, education, business experience, sophistication, and wealth on the capital structure of single-owner corporations. By calculating the marginal contribution of personal risk tolerance, we demonstrate that owner preference contributes meaningfully to the explained variation in capital structure decisions.
Correlates Of Inter-Generational Transmission Of Intimate Partner Violence, Nivin A. Qudeimat-Tercero
Correlates Of Inter-Generational Transmission Of Intimate Partner Violence, Nivin A. Qudeimat-Tercero
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Intimate partner violence is a prevalent phenomenon plaguing society, with its negative effects being propagated from one generation to the next. The author hypothesized that there exists a qualitative correlation between male children who witnessed adult males perpetrate violence against females in childhood and subsequent adult onset perpetration of violence against women. After conducting a meta-analysis of 44 peer-reviewed articles, the author found that: (a) children who witnessed interparental IPV manifested increased disturbed behaviors as well as cognitive and emotional impairment corresponding to the severity and frequency of the episodes witnessed; and (b) men who witnessed parental IPV were more …

Using Propensity Score Modeling To Minimize The Influence Of Confounding Risks Related To Prenatal Tobacco Exposure, (Julia) Hua Fang, Craig Johnson, Nicolas Chevalier, Christian Stopp, Sandra A. Wiebe, Lauren S. Wakschlag, Kimberly A. Espy
Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications
Introduction: Despite efforts to control for confounding variables using stringent sampling plans, selection bias typically exists in observational studies, resulting in unbalanced comparison groups. Ignoring selection bias can result in unreliable or misleading estimates of the causal effect.
Methods: Generalized boosted models were used to estimate propensity scores from 42 confounding variables for a sample of 361 neonates. Using emergent neonatal attention and orientation skills as an example developmental outcome, we examined the impact of tobacco exposure with and without accounting for selection bias. Weight at birth, an outcome related to tobacco exposure, also was used to examine the functionality …

Links Of Connectedness: A Content Analysis And Industry Survey Comparing The Interactive Options Of Community And Metro Newspaper Web Sites, Cleveland Allin Means
Dissertations
As newspapers struggle to redefine their role in a constantly shifting mass media landscape, this research project studies how one of mass communications’ historically fundamental mediums, the community newspaper, is utilizing its Web presence to connect to readers in innovative ways that might perpetuate loyalty to the local press. A key question is: How can community newspapers utilize their Web sites’ interactive features to maintain useful links of connectedness with local readers, in effect capitalizing on the very technologies that many analysts predict will ultimately render them obsolete?
Through content analysis of newspaper Web site home pages and industry surveys, …

Tā, Vā , And Moana: Temporality, Spatiality, And Indigeneity, Hūfanga ‘Okusitino Māhina
Pacific Studies
This article explores how indigenous perspectives—specifically from the Moana—can reshape the way anthropology is practiced and understood. A key focus is on genealogy, not just as family lineage, but as a powerful tool for understanding how people, places, and histories are connected across time and space. The article argues that genealogy in Moana cultures is deeply philosophical and relational, helping to explain how individuals and communities locate themselves within broader social and natural worlds. This approach is grounded in the Moana concepts of tā (time) and vā (space).

Focusing on Samoan myths surrounding the origins of kava, the study demonstrates how genealogy serves as a framework for interpreting mythological narratives and cultural identity. The article draws from the author's participation in ASAO sessions on indigenous anthropology and kava, highlighting the importance of culturally grounded approaches in analyzing indigenous knowledge systems.
Teu Le Va: Toward A Native Anthropology, Melani Anae
Teu Le Va: Toward A Native Anthropology, Melani Anae
Pacific Studies
The Samoan word va tapuia, includes the term “tapu,” within. The term literally refers to the sacred (tapu-ia) relationship (va) between man and all things, animate and inanimate. It implies that in our relationships with all things, living and dead, there exists a sacred essence, a life force beyond human reckoning. The distinction here between what is living and what is dead is premised not so much on whether a “life force,” i.e. a mauli or fatu manava exists in the thing (i.e. whether a “life-breath” of “heart beat” exudes from it), but whether that thing, living …

A Different Weight: Tension And Promise In “Indigenous Anthropology”, Fa‘Anofo Lisaclaire Uperesa
Pacific Studies
This article offers a personal reflection on indigenous anthropology through the lens of the author's upbringing and research experiences in American Samoa. Grounded in the complexities of aiga (kinship) and layered genealogies, the work explores how biographical and cultural ties shape research ethics, methods, and accountability when conducting fieldwork at "home." By drawing on her position as a Native Pacific Islander and scholar, the author highlights the transformative possibilities of indigenous knowledge production and the responsibilities of researching within one’s own community.

Essences And Transformations In Objects, Animals, And Humans, Alicia Brooke Smith
Essences And Transformations In Objects, Animals, And Humans, Alicia Brooke Smith
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Research as to how humans group natural kinds, such as animals, is essential to understanding categorization processes. However, it lacks conventional application and generalization to everyday life. Humans are social beings that encounter a wide array of individuals on a daily basis. In these situations, we are required to consider various properties that make up these people. As Keller (2005) suggests, the way we categorize is shaped by our theories about the world. Therefore, when we determine the rationale behind people’s social categorization processes, we are better able to understand people’s perceptions of their social environment. Moreover, when we conduct …
Wordsworth's Decline: Self-Editing And Editing The Self, Kenneth E. Morrison
Wordsworth's Decline: Self-Editing And Editing The Self, Kenneth E. Morrison
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In critical discourse surrounding the poetry of William Wordsworth, it has become generally acceptable to describe the course of the poet’s career by means of a theory of “decline.” In its most common form, this theory argues that Wordsworth’s best poetry was written during one “Great Decade” (1798-1807)—an isolated epoch of prolificacy and genius. His subsequent works, it is argued, neither surpass nor equal his initial efforts; the course of his career after 1808 may be best described in terms of declivity, ebb, and decline.
Due to its ideological complicity with the very texts it engages, and due to its …
Differentiating Anxiety And Depression Using The Clinical Assessment Of Depression, Zane K. Dempsey
Differentiating Anxiety And Depression Using The Clinical Assessment Of Depression, Zane K. Dempsey
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Anxiety and depression are two disorders frequently diagnosed in adults. Given serious adverse affects such as physical health problems, interpersonal relationship difficulties, and suicide, differentiation in treatment of these often comorbid disorders is a necessity in providing appropriate care. The tripartite model of anxiety and depression (Clark & Watson, 1991) proposes that these disorders are linked by a common trait (Negative Affect) and differentiated by a trait common to depression (lack of Positive Affect) and a trait common to anxiety (Physiological Hyperarousal). The Clinical Assessment of Depression (CAD; Bracken & Howell, 2004), a recently published selfreport narrow-band measure of depression, …

Impact Of Stress Management On Learning In A Classroom Setting, Pankaj Mandale
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Stress is an important feature of the lives of college students and can impact negatively on learning. The effectiveness of an in-class stress management intervention for improving course content retention was tested with a cross-over design in two introductory graduate biostatistics classes. Each class met one day per week for the duration of the semester, and was taught by the same instructor, following the same syllabus. A pretest duplicating items on the midterm and final exam was administered to all students at the first class meeting. Identical midterm and final exams were administered in both classes. During the first half …

Gritting Teeth: A Memoir Of Unhealthy Love, Samantha L. Day
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Originally intended to be modeled after Eula Biss’s creative nonfiction essay “The Balloonists”—which tackles the subject of marriage via fragmented prose poems— “Gritting Teeth: A Memoir of Unhealthy Love” is a piece that has taken on a subject and form of its own. A memoirist like Vivian Gornick might not claim the writer’s piece, as it hesitates to offer a “story” in places. A memoirist like Sue William Silverman might not claim the piece, as it hesitates to be courageous at times. But this collage of song lyrics, research snippets, and even Craigslist postings works in conjunction with fragments from …

Caffeine Supplementation And Moderate Intensity Exercise Modulates The Cytotoxic Lymphocyte Subset (Cd+8) In Naive And Tolerant Individuals, Elizabeth Ann Fedor
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of caffeine supplementation on caffeine tolerant and caffeine naïve individual’s lymphocyte counts, apoptosis and migration levels. In addition, effects of exercise on post-caffeine ingestion lymphocyte counts, apoptosis and migration levels were determined. It was hypothesized that caffeine would alter the immune system cell counts, but that exercise would be able to restore the immune system to homeostasis. Seventeen Western Kentucky University students were tested (males n=7, females n=10; n=7: caffeine tolerant= 200mg or more per day group, n=9: caffeine naïve= 50mg or less per day group). Design Decisions Under Risk And Uncertainty, Sravya Thoomu
Design Decisions Under Risk And Uncertainty, Sravya Thoomu
All Theses
In the contemporary world of engineering, engineers strive towards designing reliable and robust artifacts while considering and attempting to control manufacturing costs. In due course they have to deal with some sort of uncertainty. Many aspects of the design are the result of properties that are defined within some tolerances, of measurements that are appropriate, and of circumstances and environmental conditions that are out of their control. This uncertainty was typically handled by using factors of safety, and resulted in designs that may have been overly conservative. Therefore, understanding and handling the uncertainties is critical in improving the design, controlling …

The purpose of this study is to determine the best proactive measures in a hospital setting to reduce patient handling injuries among healthcare workers. Improper patient handling techniques have been found to be a major cause of workplace injuries among health care workers in the hospital setting. A systematic review was performed to assess programs that have implemented various methods of improving patient handling techniques. There are numerous programs or components that were found to be successful in reducing patient handling injuries. Among these program components are lift teams, lifting equipment, ceiling lifts, education, training and an active multidisciplinary team. …
