Importance Of Religious Beliefs To Ethical Attitudes In Business, Tisha L. N. Emerson, Joseph A. Mckinney Sep 2010

Importance Of Religious Beliefs To Ethical Attitudes In Business, Tisha L. N. Emerson, Joseph A. Mckinney

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

One would expect a relationship between the ethical attitudes and the religion of individuals. Published research into this relationship has found somewhat mixed results. While some studies have found a significant, positive relationship between religious belief and ethical attitudes, other studies have found either no effect or only a “marginal effect”. In this study, we investigate the relationship between religious convictions and attitudes toward ethical dilemmas. We find strong evidence to suggest that business professionals who self-report higher levels of religious importance are significantly less accepting of ethically questionable behavior – for all 16 vignettes studied. This result is far …

On The Atrophy Of Moral Reasoning In The Global Financial Crisis, Kim Hawtrey, Rutherford Johnson Sep 2010

On The Atrophy Of Moral Reasoning In The Global Financial Crisis, Kim Hawtrey, Rutherford Johnson

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

The Global Financial Crisis - and its human toll - can be attributed to an atypical pandemic of morally sourced market failure. This paper develops a ‘moral bubble’ understanding of the sub-prime crisis, in which ethical decision-making by economic actors is marked by expediency and crowd effects. The paper revisits Adam Smith’s Theory of Moral Sentiments and shows Smith’s theory offers a helpful corrective to the ethical atrophy behind the recent credit crisis. The need to safeguard the 'soft' (moral) infrastructure of markets has significant implications for business decision-makers, for public policy, and for the role of Christian belief in …

Pope Benedict Xvi's "Caritas In Veritate": A Challenge To Business Ethics, James R. Stormes S.J. Sep 2010

Pope Benedict Xvi's "Caritas In Veritate": A Challenge To Business Ethics, James R. Stormes S.J.

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

“Business ethics risks becoming subservient to existing economic and financial systems rather than correcting their dysfunctional aspects.” This statement from Pope Benedict XVI’s Encyclical letter "Caritas in Veritate" [Love in Truth] is both a challenge to business ethics and an example of the holistic model on which Catholic Social Thought is based. Ethical issues are embedded in anthropological presuppositions and this article describes the Pope’s analysis of the conflicting presuppositions regarding economic activity and the market in the current economic ideology and that of Catholic Social Thought. He sees the task of business ethics as addressing those presuppositions and he …

The Great Academic-Practitioner Divide: A Tale Of Two Paradigms, D. Brian Mcnatt, Myron Glassman, Aaron Glassman Sep 2010

The Great Academic-Practitioner Divide: A Tale Of Two Paradigms, D. Brian Mcnatt, Myron Glassman, Aaron Glassman

Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

For decades, many academicians have expressed concern about the gap between themselves and practitioners. In those decades, much has been written about the probable causes of and methods for narrowing this gap. Despite the dialog and the efforts to narrow it, the gap remains. This paper explores four assumptions related to the gap. We use paradigm theory to examine the "academic world" and the "practitioner world" and to explain how the separate worlds perpetuate the gap. We then propose that academicians either accept the gap or legitimize the pracademic viewpoint. a paradigm that reconciles the differences between the academic and …

The Relevance Of The Natural Environment To Social Work : A Comparison Of Fields That Consider The Natural Environment In Social Problems : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, John D. Ritchie

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Given the natural environment's importance to humans, this study was undertaken to understand how social work has considered the natural environment in approaching social problems compared to other fields that consider the natural environment. In addition, comparing literature from several fields, the author sought to evaluate the adequacy of social work's attention to the natural environment as the field analyzes and conceives solutions to social problems and carries out its mission. The study examined the gaps in social work literature regarding the natural environment. The author compared published literature from social work, psychology, environmental health and medicine, and environmentalism to …

No Inhiibitions, No Moral Sense, And No Social Structure : The Etiology Of The Psychopath And The Sociopath : A Project Based Upon Independent Investigation, Chad Melvin O'Brien

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Psychopathy and sociopathy are two personality disorders that are similar in action though different in origin. Whereas the psychopathic individual is a product of nature in that the origin of the social disorder originates in the mind, the sociopathic individual is a product of upbringing as sociopathy is more so a result of a learned/defensive behavior. Although the number is uncertain, there could be as many as ten million psychopathic and sociopathic people living in the United States today. This paper focuses on the etiology of both psychopathy and sociopathy. It also looks at how psychopathy and sociopathy are recognized …

This study was undertaken to better understand the dynamics occurring in the father-daughter relationship and consequently the effects on daughters when there is a cut-off between this dyad post-divorce. Much of the current research and literature available on the topics of father loss and divorce have been on father-child cut-off without a specific focus on the father-daughter relationship. Therefore, this study was designed to specifically focus on the effects of cut-off experienced by daughters. An in-depth qualitative interview was conducted with twelve adult daughters who identified having experienced a cut-off from their father post their parents divorce. These interviews contained …

(2) How does a clinician's own culture impact his or her assessments of a family's coping abilities? and (3) How can clinicians gain better cultural sensitivity and cultural competence in working with diverse populations? Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 social workers who were working in pediatric oncology centers across the United States. …
