Too Big To Remedy - Rethinking Mass Restitution For Slavery And Jim Crow, Kaimipono David Wenger
Too Big To Remedy - Rethinking Mass Restitution For Slavery And Jim Crow, Kaimipono David Wenger
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
Slavery and Jim Crow inflicted horrific harms on Blacks in America. Official silence aggravated that harm, as neither victims nor their descendants received monetary restitution, nor even (until very recently) any official apology. Reparations advocates have repeatedly called for compensation to slave descendants. But how exactly does society compensate for slavery?
Of course, compensation for mass injustice is always difficult to calculate and administer. Slavery puts the normal concerns of mass compensation into sharp relief and adds a whole new set of unique concerns for courts, legislators, and scholars.
In this Article, I use slavery and Jim Crow harms as …

Body Polluted: Questions Of Scale, Gender, And Remedy, Dayna Nadine Scott
Body Polluted: Questions Of Scale, Gender, And Remedy, Dayna Nadine Scott
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
This Article offers a critique of tort remedies grounded in feminist theory of the body. It demonstrates how tort law is invested in a notion of an individuated legal subject, which fails to capture the critical interconnectedness of bodies in a social, political, historical, and colonial context. Taking the "injury" of endocrine disruption in a Canadian Aboriginal community as an example of a contemporary pollution harm, the analysis considers various torts on a conceptual level, and what they might offer the Aamjiwnaang First Nation in the way of remedies. In each case, what the tort can do depends on how …
Fear Of Cancer, S. Lochlann Jain
Fear Of Cancer, S. Lochlann Jain
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
While the cancer rate and related statistics remain remarkably high, people rarely consider the actual suffering of people living with and dying from cancer as the real sacrifice for, and structural result of, the everyday use of carcinogens such as those in gasoline, pesticides, and cosmetics. On the heels of the recently published President's Cancer Panel Report, "Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk: What We Can Do Now," this Article aims to better understand why "fear of cancer" litigation has failed to accomplish its intended purpose-to distribute the costs of known and potentially toxic chemicals-and examines how the relevant law justifies this …

Suggestions On Effective Corporate New Employee Orientation Program For Human Resource Specialists, Xin Chen
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
The purpose of this study was to suggest strategies for preparing new employee orientation programs for private section organizations. More specifically, the study addressed challenges and approaches for effective orientation programs. The paper discusses two curriculum and instruction models. A model designed by Finch and Crunkilton was adapted for a general and department orientation development. The Mager and Beach’s model was suggested to use for job orientation development.

An Informal Analysis Of Career And Technical Student Organization Competitive Event Competencies Via Kolb’S Experiential Learning Theory, Mark D. Threeton, John C. Ewing, Robert W. Clark
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
In an effort to provide Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) advisors with additional insight on enhancing the educational experience for students, this paper examined the national contest competencies of the Health Occupations Society of America (HOSA) Veterinary Assisting Career Development Event, the national FFA Organization Floriculture Career Development Event and the SkillsUSA Automotive Service Technology Career Development Event to determine if potential exists for a holistic approach to competition preparation via the alignment with the four modes of Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle. The results indicated that preparation for competitive events in each of the respective CTSOs lend themselves to …

Ictal Functional Neuroimaging Of Childhood Absence Epilepsy, Matthew Vestal
Ictal Functional Neuroimaging Of Childhood Absence Epilepsy, Matthew Vestal
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Absence seizures in Childhood Absence Epilepsy (CAE) are 5 10 second episodes of impaired consciousness that are characterized on electroencephalography (EEG) by frontally-predominant, 3 4 Hz spike and wave discharges (SWD). The aims of this study were to use simultaneous EEG, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and behavioral testing to identify the neural networks involved in absence seizures as well as to examine the timecourse of those ictal fMRI changes. It was hypothesized that absence seizures involve wide-reaching neural networks including the areas traditionally associated with normal attention processing and that absence seizures produce fMRI signal changes not only during …

College Student Generational Status: Similarities, Differences, And Factors In College Adjustment, James B. Hertel
College Student Generational Status: Similarities, Differences, And Factors In College Adjustment, James B. Hertel
The Psychological Record
This study explored similarities and differences between 130 first-year college students classified as first or second generation. Multiple regression analyses and between-group t tests were performed to analyze the data. The study found that firstgeneration students reported significantly less parental income and social adjustment. On-campus friend support predicted overall adjustment better for second-generation students whereas intellectualism predicted better for first-generation students. Selfesteem and on-campus support consistently predicted adjustment for the entire sample. Implications are suggested.

Using Cluster Analysis To Examine Husband-Wife Decision Making, Jennifer M. Bonds-Raacke
Using Cluster Analysis To Examine Husband-Wife Decision Making, Jennifer M. Bonds-Raacke
The Psychological Record
Cluster analysis has a rich history in many disciplines and although cluster analysis has been used in clinical psychology to identify types of disorders, its use in other areas of psychology has been less popular. The purpose of the current experiments was to use cluster analysis to investigate husband-wife decision making. Cluster analysis was selected to illustrate the point that it can be a beneficial multivariate technique when researching husband-wife decision making by examining similar decision-making strategies used by couples and comparing joint decisions to individual decisions. For the current experiments, participants (26 couples) watched 6 movie trailers and viewed …

Preference Reversal: A New Look At An Old Problem, Shu Li
Preference Reversal: A New Look At An Old Problem, Shu Li
The Psychological Record
A generalized weak dominance approach is used to test the documented preference reversal (PR) phenomenon. This approach simply models risky choice behavior in PR as a choice between the best possible outcomes or a choice between the worst possible outcomes by equating smaller paired outcome difference between bets. The preference reversals are therefore seen as a consequence of the fact that gamble parameters are designed to encourage individuals to differentiate the difference between the worst possible outcomes of the two bets (i.e., to avoid the worse possible outcome of $ bet) rather than to differentiate the difference between the best …
