Relational Humility, Don Davis Sep 2010

Relational Humility, Don Davis

Theses and Dissertations

The study of humility has progressed slowly due to lack of theory and measurement issues. In the present dissertation, I review the literature on humility and propose a theory of relational humility. The model conceptualizes humility as a personality judgment, aligning its study with a large literature that spans social and personality psychology. Then, in four studies, I examined initial evidence for the theoretical model. In Study 1 (N=300), I created the Relational Humility Scale (RHS) and evaluated its items using exploratory factor analysis. The RHS was found to have 3 subscales: Global Humility, Superiority, and Accurate View of Self. …

Academic Performance, Persistence, And Degree Completion Of Associate In Arts Degree Recipients Transferring To A Four-Year Multi-Campus Institution, Saul Reyes Sep 2010

Academic Performance, Persistence, And Degree Completion Of Associate In Arts Degree Recipients Transferring To A Four-Year Multi-Campus Institution, Saul Reyes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study assessed if there were differences in the academic performance, persistence, and degree completion for Associate in Arts transfer students in selected majors who enrolled in the different campuses of a multi-campus university. This causal comparative study analyzed historical student enrollment data from a large, urban, public, research university. Multiple and logistic regression techniques were used to simultaneously control for important independent variables identified in the literature. Variables that were significant (p < .05) for at least one of the three dependent variables included campus, major, community college GPA, gender, and ethnicity. Significant campus differences were found in academic performance, but not for persistence or degree completion. Significant differences by major were reported for academic performance, persistence, and degree completion.

An Emotion Model For Video Game Ai, Thomas Caudell, Anthony Campisi Sep 2010

An Emotion Model For Video Game Ai, Thomas Caudell, Anthony Campisi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Modeling human behavior in computer simulations and games is a subject which draws considerable attention. Despite the increased realism of graphics in games, poor modeling of non-player characters AI often leads to a shallow and unfulfilling game experience. Recently there has been increased focus on more sophisticated AI routines which have been used in both academic and commercial games. Emotion, however, is often ignored despite being an essential element of human behavior especially under stressful conditions. Research into the use of emotion in agent-based systems seems more concerned with how to convey the emotions of agents to the human player, …

The Common Factors, Empirically Validated Treatments, And Recovery Models Of Therapeutic Change, Andrew D. Reisner Sep 2010

The Common Factors, Empirically Validated Treatments, And Recovery Models Of Therapeutic Change, Andrew D. Reisner

The Psychological Record

I review the Common Factors Model, the Empirically Validated Therapy Model, and the Recovery Model of therapeutic change and effectiveness. In general, psychotherapy appears to be effective and common factors account for more of the variance than do specific techniques. However, in some areas, particularly in the treatment of anxiety disorders, behavioral and cognitive behavioral therapies may be more effective than other treatments. The Recovery Model is an overarching model of change which can incorporate empirically validated therapies and which makes use of common factors. This model is consistent with empirically supported concepts concerning improvement of mental health but needs …

The Nature And Value Of Scientific System Building: The Case Of Interbehaviorism, Michael C. Clayton, Linda C. Hayes, Mark A. Swain Sep 2010

The Nature And Value Of Scientific System Building: The Case Of Interbehaviorism, Michael C. Clayton, Linda C. Hayes, Mark A. Swain

The Psychological Record

J. R. Kantor (1888-1984) developed and promoted an often underappreciated psychological system he called interbehaviorism that attempted to organize scientific values into a coherent system of psychology. Kantor insisted that in all scientific behavior the scientist needed to differentiate between constructs and events. If we were to develop constructs it would be only after careful observation of the actual events in context. He felt that his mission of forging naturalistic constructs for psychological events could be achieved only through scientific system building, and this was the activity that consumed his entire career. The present paper focuses on scientific system construction …

“For Any Reason”: Paper Promises To Protect Service Members, Tami Martin

Legislation and Policy Brief

In short, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) is the law that prohibits lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals from serving openly in the military. Despite the fact that the Obama Administration has yet to fulfill the campaign promise of ending DADT, many believe the question is more "when" than "if" it will be repealed. Much attention has focused on ending the policy, but it is also important to consider what might happen after repeal. This article briefly examines the history of DADT, major policies meant to protect service members from harassment they experience because of their actual or perceived sexual …

Evaluating Libertarian Paternalism, Michelle Elizabeth Catalano Sep 2010

Evaluating Libertarian Paternalism, Michelle Elizabeth Catalano

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate a form of soft paternalism put forth by Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein known as libertarian paternalism. On their view, criteria are provided for distinguishing between justified and unjustified libertarian paternalism policy proposals. The central philosophical issue surrounding libertarian paternalism is determining when limitations on autonomy for the sake of beneficence are justified. However, the criteria given by Thaler and Sunstein are inadequate because they do not effectively overcome problematic case examples. I contend that an additional autonomy-based condition should be added to their criteria. Specifically, autonomy may trump beneficence in favor …

Gender Dimorphism In The United States Legal System: A "Post-Feminist" And Comparative Critique, James Wilets Sep 2010

Gender Dimorphism In The United States Legal System: A "Post-Feminist" And Comparative Critique, James Wilets

Faculty Scholarship

There has been extensive jurisprudential literature positing that the structure, values and processes of the American legal and educational system, focusing heavily on adversarial battle among parties in court, and competition in law school, are fundamentally "male-centered." This "male-female" construct suggests that there is an essential dichotomy between the two genders with respect to resolving disputes that is reflected in the legal system, and that this male-female dichotomy is harmful to all participants and perhaps to justice itself.

This article expands upon this literature by arguing that many of the dysfunctional characteristics of the American legal system labeled "male" in …

A Microwave Radiometer For Close Proximity Core Body Temperature Monitoring: Design, Development, And Experimentation, Quenton Bonds Sep 2010

A Microwave Radiometer For Close Proximity Core Body Temperature Monitoring: Design, Development, And Experimentation, Quenton Bonds

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Presented is a radiometric sensor and associated electromagnetic propagation models, developed to facilitate non-invasive core body temperature extraction. The system has been designed as a close-proximity sensor to detect thermal emissions radiated from deep-seated tissue 1 cm – 3 cm inside the human body. The sensor is intended for close proximity health monitoring applications, with potential implications for deployment into the improved astronaut liquid cooling garment (LCG). The sensor is developed for high accuracy and resolution. Therefore, certain design issues that distort the close proximity measurement have been identified and resolved. An integrated cavity-backed slot antenna (CBSA) is designed to …
