Spirituality, Religiosity, And Weight Management In Black Women, Shené L. Bowie Oct 2010

Spirituality, Religiosity, And Weight Management In Black Women, Shené L. Bowie

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background

Obesity is a major concern in the United States and Black Americans are among those with the highest rates of overweight, obesity, and related co- morbidities. While weight loss among Black women has been studied within the context of a faith-based setting, there is little information about the relationship between spirituality, or relationship with the transcendent, and self-efficacy in the achievement and maintenance of a healthy weight.

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationships among spirituality, self-efficacy for physical activity and healthy eating, and body composition measures among Black women over the period of participation …

Preventive Care Utilization Among Black Women : Perceived Beliefs, Benefits And Barriers To Mammography Screening, Rowandalla Y. Dunbar

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Blacks, in comparison to other racial or ethnic groups, suffer higher rates of illness and death from many preventable or treatable diseases. Despite the significantly higher rates of mortality and disease, Blacks are least likely to utilize clinical preventive care services. Black women, who are more likely to have advanced breast cancer at time of diagnosis (Chu, Lamar, & Freeman, 2003) are least likely to seek mammography screening (National Health Interview Study, 2000). Allen, Bastani, Bazargan and Leonard (2002) examined predictors of mammography screening among women 40 years old and older residing in the South Central area of Los Angeles, …

Recognition Within The Limits Of Reason: Remarks On Pippin’S Hegel’S Practical Philosophy, David Ingram

Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Since the publication of Charles Taylor’s Multiculturalism and the Politics of Recognition in 1989,[1] the concept of recognition has re-emerged as a central if not dominant category of moral and political philosophy.

The search for longevity-determining genes in human has largely neglected the operation of genetic interactions. We have identified a novel combination of common variants of three genes that has a marked association with human lifespan and healthy aging. Subjects were recruited and stratified according to their genetically inferred ethnic affiliation to account for population structure. Haplotype analysis was performed in three candidate genes, and the haplotype combinations were tested for association with exceptional longevity. An HRAS1 haplotype enhanced the effect of an APOE haplotype on exceptional survival, and a LASS1 haplotype further augmented its magnitude. These results were replicated in …

The Role Of Emotions In Crisis Responses: Inaugural Test Of The Integrated Crisis Mapping (Icm) Model, Yan Jin, Augustine Pang, Glen T. Cameron Oct 2010

The Role Of Emotions In Crisis Responses: Inaugural Test Of The Integrated Crisis Mapping (Icm) Model, Yan Jin, Augustine Pang, Glen T. Cameron

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to extend current theories in crisis communication, by developing a more systemic approach to understanding the role of emotions in crises and the strategies organizations can use to respond. The authors' integrated crisis mapping (ICM) model is premised on a public-based, emotion-driven perspective where different crises are mapped on two continua, the organization's engagement in the crisis and primary public's coping strategy. Design/methodology/approach: Content analysis was used to analyze 259 stories in US mainstream newspaper covering five different crisis cases. Findings: The initial test suggests theoretical rigor. It found that publics involved in …

Why Has Aesthetic Formalism Fallen On Hard Times?, David E.W. Fenner Oct 2010

Why Has Aesthetic Formalism Fallen On Hard Times?, David E.W. Fenner

Philosophy and Religious Studies Faculty Research and Scholarship

Nick Zangwill has done more than any person recently to resuscitate aesthetic formalism. I say "resuscitate" because formalism has not been in favor for several decades. Zangwill writes that "Aesthetic Formalism has fallen on hard times. At best it receives unsympathetic discussion and swift rejection. At worse it is the object of abuse and derision." The reasons many today believe aesthetic formalism is not viable have been the subject of discussion since the pendulum swing away from New Criticism, via the work of William Wimsatt, Cleanth Brooks, Clement Greenberg, André Levinson, and Heinrich Wolfflin. Most of these reasons have been …

Injuries And The Quality Of Life Of Collegiate Athletes: A Pilot Study, Anna Ford, Daniel Panchik Oct 2010

Injuries And The Quality Of Life Of Collegiate Athletes: A Pilot Study, Anna Ford, Daniel Panchik

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: To explore the relationship between injury severity and athletes’ quality of life, as well as the role of cognitive appraisal during participation restrictions. Method: A descriptive quantitative survey research design was used. Ten NCAA Division III athletes completed two self-report instruments: the SF-12v2TM Health Survey and a scale that ranked injury severity based on time-loss from sport. Results: Data analysis yielded three main findings: (a) mean mental health scores were lower than mean physical health scores in all injury severity categories; (b) three participants had higher mental than physical health scores; and (c) only four scores were beyond the …

Making A Place For Gifted Education: Learning From States That Maintain Gifted Education Programs Despite Academic And Economic Pressure, Amanda Vander Klay Oct 2010

Making A Place For Gifted Education: Learning From States That Maintain Gifted Education Programs Despite Academic And Economic Pressure, Amanda Vander Klay

Senior Honors Theses

As the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act (2001), which includes expectations for Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), is constantly on the minds of state and local leaders, gifted programming has seen a decrease in the United States. In the difficult economy, limited resources are being funneled towards those students who need to increase their test scores to make AYP. This thesis will examine the model states of Kansas, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Arkansas that have managed to provide mandated and funded gifted programming while excelling in their AYP and managing the strains of tight state budgets.

A National Survey Of Bibliotherapy Preparation And Practices Of Professional Counselors, D. Pehrsson, P. S. Mcmillen

Library Faculty Research

A national survey of 'Bibliotherapy Practices in Counseling' was conducted in 2008. This project was partially supported by an Association of Creativity in Counseling Research Award. Little research exists regarding preparation of professional counselors and their specific use of bibliotherapy interventions. Invitations and survey requests were sent to a random sample of current members of the American Counseling Association. Respondent data indicated counselors do use bibliotherapy in their practice; however, this is largely limited to using informational, workbook, and self-help materials. An analysis of counselors' theoretical orientations, client populations, and practice settings is presented. Implications for counselors and counselor-educators and …

Developing A Science Café Program For Your University Library, Jeanine Marie Scaramozzino, Catherine Trujillo Oct 2010

Developing A Science Café Program For Your University Library, Jeanine Marie Scaramozzino, Catherine Trujillo

Library Scholarship

The Science Café is a national movement that attempts to foster community dialog and inquiry on scientific topics in informal venues such as coffee houses, bookstores, restaurants and bars. The California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, Robert E. Kennedy Library staff have taken the Science Café model out of bars and cafes and into the university's library. They have created an outreach opportunity as the campus community comes together to share and discuss faculty research, student work, and outside speakers' knowledge. The Science Café programs encourage open, easy-to-understand conversation exploring scientific and interdisciplinary topics in an attempt to build …

Librarians Do It Differently: Comparative Usability Testing With Students And Library Staff, Nancy Turner Oct 2010

Librarians Do It Differently: Comparative Usability Testing With Students And Library Staff, Nancy Turner

Librarian Publications

Our experience as librarians suggests that library staff search and locate library resources differently than college students. We bring to our work knowledge about library collections and search tool functionality that may inform our strategies for finding library resources. Through our training and experience, we have developed more accurate mental models for the information universe for which our library website is a portal. The purpose of this research is to explore that hypothesis and if it has merit, to articulate those differences in information seeking behaviors, particularly search strategy and tool use. As those patterns of difference are identified, the …

Auxiliary Be Production By African American English-Speaking Children With And Without Specific Language Impairment, April W. Garrity, Janna B. Oetting

Faculty Publications

Purpose: To examine 3 forms (am, is, are) of auxiliary BE production by African American English (AAE)-speaking children with and without specific language impairment (SLI). Method: Thirty AAE speakers participated: 10 six-year-olds with SLI, 10 age-matched controls, and 10 language-matched controls. BE production was examined through samples and a probe. Results: Across tasks, visual inspection suggested that the children with SLI overtly marked BE at lower rates than the controls, and all groups marked am at higher rates than is and are, with few dialect-inappropriate errors. Within the samples, the children also overtly marked is at higher rates when preceded …

Frames Of Injustice: The Bias We Overlook, Adam Benforado

Indiana Law Journal

The Cultural Cognition Project (CCP) at Yale Law School and the Project on Law and Mind Sciences (PLMS) at Harvard Law School draw on similar research and share a similar goal of uncovering the dynamics that shape risk perceptions, policy beliefs, and attributions underlying our laws and legal theories. Nonetheless, the projects have failed to engage one another in a substantial way. This Article attempts to bridge that gap by demonstrating how the approach taken by PLMS scholars can crucially enrich CCP scholarship. As a demonstration, this Article engages the case of Scott v. Harris, 550 US. 372 (2007), the …
