Financial Innovation And Financial Fragility, Nicola Gennaioli, Andrei Shleifer, Robert Vishny Oct 2010

Financial Innovation And Financial Fragility, Nicola Gennaioli, Andrei Shleifer, Robert Vishny

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We present a standard model of financial innovation, in which intermediaries engineer securities with cash flows that investors seek, but modify two assumptions. First, investors (and possibly intermediaries) neglect certain unlikely risks. Second, investors demand securities with safe cash flows. Financial intermediaries cater to these preferences and beliefs by engineering securities perceived to be safe but exposed to neglected risks. Because the risks are neglected, security issuance is excessive. As investors eventually recognize these risks, they fly back to safety of traditional securities and markets become fragile, even without leverage, precisely because the volume of new claims is excessive. Financial …

Teachers Matter: Feelings Of School Connectedness And Positive Youth Development Among Coos County Youth, Nena F. Stracuzzi, Meghan L. Mills Oct 2010

Teachers Matter: Feelings Of School Connectedness And Positive Youth Development Among Coos County Youth, Nena F. Stracuzzi, Meghan L. Mills

Carsey Publications

Students who feel positively about their education, have a sense of belonging in school, and maintain good relationships with students and staff generally feel connected to their schools. In fact, 63 percent of Coos youth report feeling this way. It is one of the most important factors in promoting socio-emotional well-being and positive youth development, according to authors Nena Stracuzzi and Meghan Mills. Their research, using surveys of Coos students, shows that students who feel more connected to their schools usually get better grades, have higher self-esteem, use fewer substances, and engage in aggressive behaviors less frequently. Their latest brief …

Ocbs Gone Bad: The Moderating Roles Of Burnout And Role Overload, Kevin Loo Oct 2010

Ocbs Gone Bad: The Moderating Roles Of Burnout And Role Overload, Kevin Loo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Previous literature has typically assumed that organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs) are beneficial to both employees and organizations. Researchers have begun to question this assumption. This paper seeks to identify situations when OCBs are detrimental to employees or organizations. Specifically, two variables (burnout and role overload) are hypothesized to moderate the relationship between OCBs and outcomes (job satisfaction, turnover intentions, and task performance), such that when burnout and role overload are high, negative outcomes occur. Moderated regression was used to test the hypotheses. There was little evidence for burnout as a moderator, but interactions involving role overload were significant; however, the …

Sleep And Delinquency: Does The Amount Of Sleep Matter?, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard, Peter Simi, Mary K. Evans, Amy L. Anderson Oct 2010

Sleep And Delinquency: Does The Amount Of Sleep Matter?, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard, Peter Simi, Mary K. Evans, Amy L. Anderson

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Sleep, a key indicator of health, has been linked to a variety of indicators of well-being such that people who get an adequate amount generally experience greater well-being. Further, a lack of sleep has been linked to a wide range of negative developmental outcomes, yet sleep has been largely overlooked among researchers interested in adolescent delinquency. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between hours of sleep and delinquent behavior among adolescents by using data from Wave 1 of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (n = 14,382; 50.2% female, 63.5% white). A series of …

Analyzing Multilevel Data: An Empirical Comparison Of Parameter Estimates Of Hierarchical Linear Modeling And Ordinary Least Squares Regression, Louis M. Rocconi Oct 2010

Analyzing Multilevel Data: An Empirical Comparison Of Parameter Estimates Of Hierarchical Linear Modeling And Ordinary Least Squares Regression, Louis M. Rocconi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

How college affects students is a central phenomenon of interest in higher education research. However, a major problem in assessing the influence of college on students is the methodological dilemmas due the multilevel nature of the majority of data used in such studies. Historically, higher education researchers have utilized the traditional linear model, ordinary least squares (OLS) regression, to aid in their investigation of the influence of college on students. This traditional approach ignores the multilevel nature of the data which can cause a multitude of conceptual and statistical problems. Therefore, a statistical technique, such as hierarchical linear modeling (HLM), …

Individual Contributions To Stigma And Attitudes Toward Help-Seeking Among Rural Emerging Adult College Students, Margaret Gsell Oct 2010

Individual Contributions To Stigma And Attitudes Toward Help-Seeking Among Rural Emerging Adult College Students, Margaret Gsell

Theses and Dissertations

Rural communities are by definition less densely populated and more geographically isolated than non-rural communities, which often translates into higher rates of poverty and poor access to health care, especially mental health care. Previous research has found that persons residing in rural communities endorse higher rates of stigmatized beliefs towards individuals with mental illness and subsequently lower rates of professional help-seeking when compared to persons residing in non-rural communities. This study evaluated whether these attitudes were also present among emerging adults (18-24 years old) who had lived in a rural community for at least 10 years and were currently enrolled …
