The Effect Of Network Structure On The Provision Of Security, Annelies Z. Kamran Oct 2010

The Effect Of Network Structure On The Provision Of Security, Annelies Z. Kamran

Working Papers

The term “security” has many more dimensions in the post-9/11 world than it had during the Cold War.  Threats may come from different sources, at different speeds, and have different targets.  All the actors involved in the provision of security from a specific type of threat create a network—not just states or states in intergovernmental organizations, but all the actors in the “ecosystem." If we look at the relationships among these actors using network analysis, we should be able to map the structure of the entire network. Contrary to the assumptions in most International Relations literature, networks can be centralized …

Route Of Administration For Illicit Prescription Opioids: A Comparison Of Rural And Urban Drug Users, April M. Young, Jennifer R. Havens, Carl G. Leukefeld

Behavioral Science Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Nonmedical prescription opioid use has emerged as a major public health concern in recent years, particularly in rural Appalachia. Little is known about the routes of administration (ROA) involved in nonmedical prescription opioid use among rural and urban drug users. The purpose of this study was to describe rural-urban differences in ROA for nonmedical prescription opioid use.

METHODS: A purposive sample of 212 prescription drug users was recruited from a rural Appalachian county (n = 101) and a major metropolitan area (n = 111) in Kentucky. Consenting participants were given an interviewer-administered questionnaire examining sociodemographics, psychiatric disorders, and self-reported …

Improving Service Performance For An International Container Shipping Company Using Index Approach:A Method And Applications, Kee-Kuo Chen, Jaw-Shen Wang, Ching-W Chu, Nce. Two Measur Chiu Chiu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The purpose of this study is to provide an alternative approach in importance-performance analysis (IPA) for improving service performance. Two measures, service performance index (SPI) and service improvement score (SIS), will be developed and included in the proposed approach which attempts to utilize both information directly reported by the respondents and indirectly estimated from model estimation as much as possible in IPA. For illustrating the proposed approach, the service performance improvement decision of an international container shipping company is studied. Results indicate that this company only deliveries 75% service quality desired by the customers, and that the service ability of …

Tinker, Jay Graham Oct 2010

Tinker, Jay Graham

Theses

The works presented here are primarily an exploration into movements of volumes and forms, and the ways in which these seemingly simple whole forms can challenge our methods of knowing. These works use physical movement or other means to occupy more than one class of object, illustrating the difficulty in having a coherent schematic for organizing objects like this, and generally organizing any system of knowledge. This problem of having the difficulty of creating anything has given rise to the ironic form, where the focus is on avoiding a statement, to prevent a refutation. This is an inherently negative mode, …

The Study Of Ship Collision Avoidance Route Planning By Ant Colony Algorithm, Ming-Cheng Tsou, Chao-Kuang Hsueh Oct 2010

The Study Of Ship Collision Avoidance Route Planning By Ant Colony Algorithm, Ming-Cheng Tsou, Chao-Kuang Hsueh

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Maritime traffic is becoming more complex every day. At present, due to technological advances and to new maritime regulations, there is increasing demand for new nautical marine instruments to be installed into the bridge, and the breadth of navigational information complicates on-duty officers’ decisions. Therefore, if decision support tools can be used to help deal with navigational decision-making, human errors arising from subjective judgments can be reduced, and sea transport safety improved. This research uses the concept of e-navigation as a framework, positioning collision avoidance path planning as the main theme, and applies an Ant Colony Algorithm (ACA) in the …
