The Effect Of War On Art: The Work Of Mark Rothko, Elizabeth Leigh Doland Jan 2010

The Effect Of War On Art: The Work Of Mark Rothko, Elizabeth Leigh Doland

LSU Master's Theses

My goal for this thesis was to adequately illustrate the effect war can have on art and artists. I chose to single out one particular artist who lived and worked during a time of war and explore his life and work. My choice of artist was not random: I chose an individual who was particularly concerned about his external environment, and was active in the political and social issues of the time. My subject is Mark Rothko, a Russian-Jewish artist who immigrated from Russia as a boy and spent his life in the hotspot of artistic inspiration, New York City. …

Is A Student's Conceptual Knowledge Affected By Their Vocabulary Instruction?, Daniel C. Cox Jan 2010

Is A Student's Conceptual Knowledge Affected By Their Vocabulary Instruction?, Daniel C. Cox

LSU Master's Theses

The following paper explores the possible relationship between the manner in which a student is taught vocabulary in a high school physics classroom and the ability of those students to correctly answer physics conceptual questions. Two high school physics classes taught by the same teacher (eight or nine students in one and seventeen in the other) received identical instruction throughout multiple units with the exception of vocabulary instruction. Differences were observed in the students’ ability to correctly answer conceptual questions in only one topic, heat. The students did not get better at answering a question concerning a phase change or …

Task And Relationship Conflict In Subordinates And Supervisors Relations: Interaction Effects Of Justice Perceptions And Emotion Management, Sungwon Choi Jan 2010

Task And Relationship Conflict In Subordinates And Supervisors Relations: Interaction Effects Of Justice Perceptions And Emotion Management, Sungwon Choi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the antecedents and outcomes of task and relationship conflict in subordinates and supervisors relations. Based on abusive supervision studies and the justice framework, I proposed that the relationship between abusive supervision and task conflict is mediated by procedural justice, and that the relationship between abusive supervision and relationship conflict is mediated by interactional justice. Based on emotional intelligence theory, I also proposed that these mediation processes are moderated by an individual’s emotion management ability (EMA). Finally, I anticipated that relationship conflict elicits more detrimental effect on employees’ organizational citizenship and workplace deviance behaviors. A total of 310 …

An Exploratory Study On The Perspectives Of Western Australian Drivers Towards Responding To Emergency Vehicles, Pauline Grant Jan 2010

An Exploratory Study On The Perspectives Of Western Australian Drivers Towards Responding To Emergency Vehicles, Pauline Grant

Theses : Honours

Failing to give way to emergency vehicles has resulted in one crash per day on Australian roads (NRMA, 2009), and delayed emergency service responses to situations that constitute a serious threat to life and/or property. With an anticipated population increase in Western Australia (ABS, 2009) this problem will only worsen. Whilst there have been attempts to address the problem through information leaflets and media campaigns, the success of such initiatives is not clear because of a lack of empirical assessment. The little research available in the area, focused on crash scenarios, emergency vehicle drivers, or other non-psychological processes. The current …

Experiences And Perceptions Of How Community-Based Interventions Can Promote Young Adults' Resilience To Suicide Within Rural/Regional Communities, Tracy Evans

Theses : Honours

In the literature, both statistics and studies have noted that suicide in rural/regional young adults' is an important concern. Recent research suggests, that to facilitate a primary approach to suicide prevention in young people, there is a need to promote the protective construct of resilience at a community level, highlighting strategies such as connectedness, and decreasing the stigma related to mental illness and health-seeking behaviour (Commonwealth Department of Health & Aged Care, 2005; Injury Control Council of Western Australia, 2006). However, there is a need to investigate and identify the links or mediating factors that promote individual resilience within a …

Lives In Transition: Ethnic Identity And Psychological Well-Being In Adults With A Highly Mobile Global Upbringing, Sutharshini (Dharshi) V. Vasikaran Jan 2010

Lives In Transition: Ethnic Identity And Psychological Well-Being In Adults With A Highly Mobile Global Upbringing, Sutharshini (Dharshi) V. Vasikaran

Theses : Honours

This study explored the nature of ethnic identity and its relationship to psychological wellbeing (PWB) in third culture kids (TCKs). Ethnic identity achievement in acculturating individuals (e.g., migrants) is known to furnish one with a sense of belonging to one's group together with desirable psychological outcomes. Ethnic identity construction can be more complex in TCKs because of exposure to multiple cultural contexts during developmental years. Seven TCKs currently residing in Australia were interviewed. Analysis proceeded according to Ricoeur's hermeneutic phenomenology. Two themes were elucidated: 'Making sense of identity' and 'sense of belonging and PWB'. Single and multiple (blended and alternating) …

The Impact Of Crime Outcomes On Public Opinions On Sentencing: In Particular Regards To Recent "One Punch" Legislation, Teneke Kuek Jan 2010

The Impact Of Crime Outcomes On Public Opinions On Sentencing: In Particular Regards To Recent "One Punch" Legislation, Teneke Kuek

Theses : Honours

Australia has recently experienced a punitive swing in sentencing policies and legislation. Consequently, politicians have responded favourably to popular demands for harsher sentencing. A comprehensive review of the current literature has been undertaken to understand why the community has adopted such a punitive position. It has been suggested that the media have hypersensitised the public into believing that crime is much more prevalent than it actually is, resulting in the individual fearing becoming a victim of crime. The public then chooses to elect politicians who appear to be concerned with their safety and the associated legislation. Expectancy/value theory contends that …

Determining The Point Of Optimum Transferability Of Skill, Amanda Puchar Jan 2010

Determining The Point Of Optimum Transferability Of Skill, Amanda Puchar

Theses : Honours

Cognitive research assumes that practice on a task can lead to improved performance, most often resulting in the attainment of automatic performance and possibly the transfer of this learning to another task. This study examined all of these questions through the use of a computer generated counting task that required participants, consisting of 60 randomly selected university students and friends and family of the researcher, to count stars on a display screen and determine if the number of stars presented was an odd or even number. Coefficient of variation (CV) measures that calculated the variability for a given level of …
