More Parents, More Money: Reflections On The Financial Implications Of Multiple Parentage, Melanie B. Jacobs Jan 2010

More Parents, More Money: Reflections On The Financial Implications Of Multiple Parentage, Melanie B. Jacobs

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article explores the financial implications of recognizing multiple legal parents, advocating for a legal framework that adapts to evolving family structures, including those involving assisted reproductive technologies (ART) and non-traditional parenting arrangements. It argues that courts should recognize more than two legal parents and develop a flexible system to allocate financial responsibilities, such as child support and inheritance, in a way that prioritizes the best interests of the child while accounting for the roles and intentions of all parties involved.

Informed Choices And Uniform Decisions: Adopting The Aba's Self-Enforcing Administrative Model To Ensure Successful Surrogacy Arrangements, Christine Metteer Lorillard Jan 2010

Informed Choices And Uniform Decisions: Adopting The Aba's Self-Enforcing Administrative Model To Ensure Successful Surrogacy Arrangements, Christine Metteer Lorillard

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

Non-traditional families are on the rise in America today, with more and more same-sex couples raising families together. Yet, all same-sex partners seeking to become parents must make use of some assisted reproductive technique ("ART'), as must some heterosexual married couples. Despite the growing number of people who want to create families, including those that resort to ARTs to have genetically-related children, there are significant moral, economic, and legal obstacles in their way. What has long been needed is a codified roadmap for a successful surrogacy agreement that delineates the rights and obligations of the parties involved, as well as …

Bringing Our Kids Home: International Parental Child Abduction & Japan's Refusal To Return Our Children, Robin S. Lee

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note examines Japan's refusal to ratify the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction, highlighting how this decision creates a legal haven for parental child abductions. It explores the cultural, legal, and systemic factors in Japan that facilitate these abductions and the challenges faced by foreign parents in retrieving their children. The note also discusses potential solutions and international efforts to pressure Japan into adhering to the Convention.

Gothic Representations: History, Literature, And Film, Daniel Gould Jan 2010

Gothic Representations: History, Literature, And Film, Daniel Gould

All Student Theses and Dissertations

Gothic storytelling has come a long way since the publication of Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto in 1764. This short novel created the standard motifs and tropes that will forever be associated with the genre-the destitute castle, the foreboding atmosphere, supernatural or inexplicable events, omens, prophecies, heroes, villains, and of course, a deteriorating world facilitated by the unconscious evils within hwnanity causing the complete destabilization of society.

This paper will examine the evolution of Gothic fiction and how it has been represented from its romantic heritage and Victorian upbringing to the American Gothic traditions of the nineteenth century and …

Why Do States That Oppose Nuclear Proliferation Resist New Nonproliferation Obligations?: Three Logics Of Nonproliferation Decision-Making, Andrew Grotto Jan 2010

Why Do States That Oppose Nuclear Proliferation Resist New Nonproliferation Obligations?: Three Logics Of Nonproliferation Decision-Making, Andrew Grotto

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

Why do states that oppose nuclear proliferation resist initiatives to strengthen the nonproliferation regime? There is virtually universal support for the basic principle of nonproliferation - all countries but four are states-party to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Yet enthusiasm among NPT parties for proposals to strengthen the nonproliferation regime varies widely even as new challenges highlight dangerous gaps in the regime.

There is something approaching consensus among scholars and policy-makers that many states resist proposals to strengthen the nonproliferation end of the NPT bargain largely because America and other nuclear-weapon states haven't made satisfactory progress towards nuclear disarmament. I suggest …

A Preliminary Study: Body Dysmorphic Disorder In Division I Women’S Collegiate Soccer Players, Tammy D. Jones

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The prevalence of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) among collegiate athletes has not been clearly determined. The purpose of this study was to determine if there are symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder found in Division I women’s soccer players. The researcher hypothesized that there would be some symptoms found within the participants of sport and that there was a need to research this area further.

The study consisted of four participants who participated in semi-structured interviews. The subjects were asked a series of questions from the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale Modified for Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD-YBOCS) to determine if they indicated …

Understanding Performance Ratings: Dynamic Performance, Attributions, And Rating Purpose, Jochen Reb, Gary J. Greguras Jan 2010

Understanding Performance Ratings: Dynamic Performance, Attributions, And Rating Purpose, Jochen Reb, Gary J. Greguras

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The present two studies integrate and extend the literatures on dynamic performance, performance attributions, and rating purpose, making several important contributions. First, examining attributions of dynamic performance, Study 1 predicted that performance mean and trend would affect judged ratee ability and effort and that performance variation would affect locus of causality; both predictions were supported by the results. Second, investigating the interaction between dynamic performance and rating purpose. Study 2 predicted that performance mean would have a stronger impact on administrative than on developmental ratings, whereas performance trend and variation would have a stranger impact on developmental than on administrative …

Work-Family Conflict In Work Groups: Social Information Processing, Support, And Demographic Dissimilarity, Devasheesh P. Bhave, Amit Kramer, Theresa G. Glomb Jan 2010

Work-Family Conflict In Work Groups: Social Information Processing, Support, And Demographic Dissimilarity, Devasheesh P. Bhave, Amit Kramer, Theresa G. Glomb

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We used social information processing theory to examine the effect of work-family conflict (WFC) at the work group level on individuals' experience of WFC. Consistent with hypotheses, results suggest that WFC at the work group level influences individual WFC over and above the shared work environment and job demands. It was also observed that work group support and demographic dissimilarity moderate this relationship. Moderator analyses suggest that work group social support buffers WFC for individuals but is also associated with a stronger effect of work group WFC on individuals' WFC. Moreover, the work group effect on individuals' WFC was shown …

Educational Institution Reform: Insights From The Complexity-Intelligence Strategy, Pak Tee Ng, Thow Yick Liang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper attempts to draw some significant insights for educational institution reform from the paradigm of organizing around intelligence. Using the Complexity-Intelligence strategy, human organizations are visualized as intelligent beings possessing an orgmind with high collective intelligence, and other intelligence-related characteristics that are commonly found in highly intelligent biological beings including consciousness, complex adaptive dynamic, autopoiesis, self-organization, learning, adaptation and emergence. Such intelligent human organizations primarily focus on quality connection, optimizing the intrinsic intelligence sources, and nurturing a high level of collective intelligence. It is a living intelligence-centric world. In this study, four insights and their implications from the Complexity-Intelligence …

Medical Papers and Journal Articles

Objective: To investigate whether children born to older mothers have an increased risk of type 1 diabetes by performing a meta-analysis using individual patient data to adjust for recognised confounders.

Research design and methods: Relevant studies published before June 2009 were identified from MEDLINE, Web of Science and EMBASE. Authors of studies were contacted and asked to provide individual patient data or conduct pre-specified analyses. Risk estimates of type 1 diabetes by category of maternal age were calculated for each included study, before and after adjustment for potential confounders. Meta-analysis techniques were used to derive combined odds ratios, and investigate …

This study aims to understand the antecedents of new knowledge creation in knowledge-intensive organizations. A model of knowledge management and new knowledge creation inspired by the works of Nonaka, Nahapiet and Ghoshal and others was used to develop a questionnaire. 213 individuals responded from a knowledge-based organization in Singapore. The results of the study indicated that knowledge tools and technologies interact with the modus of knowledge combination to influence knowledge outcomes in terms of worker skills, competencies, market knowledge and client relationships. The key ingredients for creating new knowledge as well as synergistic collaborations between various knowledge players are also …

Accounting, Risk, And Revolution, Stefano Harney Jan 2010

Accounting, Risk, And Revolution, Stefano Harney

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In response to the position of Steve Toms, this article argues that risk must be understood not as it has been posited by capital but rather as it might be taken up by labour. It uses Marx's socialization thesis to maintain that risk is a symptom of possibility for labour. Drawing on the work of Randy Martin the argument culminates in a consideration of the interanimation of capital in labour occasioned by the second helping of risk produced by its commoditisation. It concludes that far from being just what Michel Aglietta calls a social evaluation of private economic activity, risk …

A Comparison Of Field Measures Of Adiposity Among Australian Adolescents From The Raine Study, Paola Chivers, Helen Parker, Beth P. Hands, Lawrence Beilin, Garth Kendall, Max Bulsara

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

This study examined the possible inter-changeability of common proxy measures of adiposity in adolescent 14 year olds from a large cohort. A sample of 1,607 adolescents (n=825 male and n=782 female) was drawn from the Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study. Pearson Product Moment Correlation, Bland-Altman method, and Bland regression were used to determine the level of agreement between common proxy adiposity measures. The Bland-Altman and Bland regression results supported the notion that the two indices (Waist-height-Ratio and Body-Mass-Index) are measuring a similar construct (F = .974, p = .324). However 95 percent limits of agreement differed between the methods …

To Tell, Or Not To Tell, About Your Ocd?, Christina J. Taylor Jan 2010

To Tell, Or Not To Tell, About Your Ocd?, Christina J. Taylor

Psychology Faculty Publications

Deciding to tell people about your OCD requires careful thought. You need to think through the costs and benefits. You must take into account all aspects of the situation. You must consider the person, the setting, other people, and the other people’s relationships with one another. Be deliberative and patient in weighing all these factors.

Cognitive Therapy offers techniques to help identify ways and patterns of thinking that produce distress, negative behavior, and poor motivation. Cognitive techniques can help improve an individual’s motivation to tackle their OCD, help change their reaction to and interpretation of their obsessions, and help them to cope with the anxiety they experience when they carry out an exposure and response prevention regimen.

Perfect-Substitutes, Best-Shot, And Weakest-Link Contests Between Groups, Roman M. Sheremeta Jan 2010

Perfect-Substitutes, Best-Shot, And Weakest-Link Contests Between Groups, Roman M. Sheremeta

ESI Working Papers

This experiment investigates contests between groups. Each group has one strong player, with a higher valuation for the prize, and two weak players, with lower valuations. In contests where individual efforts are perfect substitutes, all players expend significantly higher efforts than predicted by theory. In best-shot contests, where group performance depends on the best performer, most of the effort is expended by strong players while weak players free-ride. In weakest-link contests, where group performance depends on the worst performer, there is almost no free-riding and all players expend similar positive efforts conforming to the group Pareto dominant equilibrium.

Can Markets Save Lives? An Experimental Investigation Of A Market For Organ Donations, Cary Deck, Erik O. Kimbrough Jan 2010

Can Markets Save Lives? An Experimental Investigation Of A Market For Organ Donations, Cary Deck, Erik O. Kimbrough

ESI Working Papers

Many people die while waiting for organ transplants even though the number of usable organs is far larger than the number needed for transplant. Governments have devised many policies aimed at increasing available transplant organs with variable success. However, with few exceptions, policy makers are reluctant to establish markets for organs despite the potential for mutually beneficial exchanges. We ask whether organ markets could save lives. Controlled laboratory methods are ideal for this inquiry because human lives would be involved when implementing field trials. Our results suggest that markets can increase the supply of organs available for transplant, but that …

Do Analysts Tell The Truth? Do Shareholders Listen? An Experimental Study Of Analysts' Forecasts And Shareholder Reaction, Timothy W. Shields Jan 2010

Do Analysts Tell The Truth? Do Shareholders Listen? An Experimental Study Of Analysts' Forecasts And Shareholder Reaction, Timothy W. Shields

ESI Working Papers

This work experimentally examines forecasting and trading behavior. Subjects play the role of both analyst and shareholder over the course of experiments consisting of a series of repeated games with or absent conflicts of interest. In a stylized trading setting, I test whether standard equilibrium, normative behavior, or limited strategic reasoning best predicts behavior. In the presence of conflicts of interest a substantial proportion of subjects’ behavior appears non-skeptical in the role of shareholder, though the same subject is deceptive in the role of analyst. Absent conflicts of interest, subjects behavior in the role of shareholder is nearer a best …

Patient Ventilator Dyssynchrony: Types, Frequency And Patterns In Critically Ill Adults, Karen Mellott Jan 2010

Patient Ventilator Dyssynchrony: Types, Frequency And Patterns In Critically Ill Adults, Karen Mellott

Theses and Dissertations

Patient ventilator dyssynchrony (PVD) occurs frequently, but little is known about the types, frequency and patterns of PVD for longer than 30 minutes. Deeper levels of sedation are associated with PVD. Evaluation of ventilator graphics and the ability to identify PVD should assist clinicians to optimize patient ventilator interactions and promote earlier interventions. The purpose of this study was to identify the different types, frequency and patterns of PVD in critically ill adults and determine the effect of sedation level on PVD. Thirty medical and surgical ICU adult patients were enrolled; 27 were used for analysis. Pressure/time and flow/ time …

Contributions Of Neglect Subtypes And Family History In Dsm-Iv Disorders: Findings From The Ncs-R, Leanne Heaton Jan 2010

Contributions Of Neglect Subtypes And Family History In Dsm-Iv Disorders: Findings From The Ncs-R, Leanne Heaton

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the prevalence of neglect in the child welfare system, understanding of the etiology of neglect remains limited in scope. Limitations are driven by the frequent reliance on child protective services (CPS) data which consists of identified cases and consequently, the most serious of all cases, or through a few population based studies that operationalize neglect as a homogenous phenomenon rather than as distinct subtypes. Furthermore, most studies of neglect focus on maternal deficiencies while paternal factors are largely ignored. This study is meant to address these considerations by utilizing the National Comorbidity Survey Replication (NCS-R), a broad population based …

A Verbal Snapshot Of Visual Scrutiny Primarily In The Sphere Of Art, Matthew Alverson Jan 2010

A Verbal Snapshot Of Visual Scrutiny Primarily In The Sphere Of Art, Matthew Alverson

Theses and Dissertations

Finding and extracting meaning from the world I encounter every day is the primary motivation behind my creativity. Filtering perception and separating the important bits of information by selection or elimination is the crux of this investigation. This process is one of finding rationale in futility and applying meaning to meaningless encounters. The significance of life is not fixed and it is our responsibility to make it up to best suit the desire to have purpose. Depending on the way something is looked at determines the meaning behind it. Anything can have content if it is seen and translated a …

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis expansively and inclusively puts forth the imaginings, research, processes and experiences behind my two thesis exhibitions, "Journeys into the unknown: a series of science architecture tasks and events, space-bound explorations and far-travels, discoveries and misses (near and far), imaginative space-gazing and related investigations, observations, orbits, and other repetitious monitoring tasks" and "Timed travel: asystematic accounts of regular and geometrical timekeeping, orbital flight, repetitive rotations and other journeys into actual time and slow space." It begins with an abstract interpretation of the dial: a tool not limited to scientific measurement but, instead, a gauge of an object’s overall position …

A Post-Communist Picnic, Yi Sheng Jan 2010

A Post-Communist Picnic, Yi Sheng

Theses and Dissertations

Signaling the moon, packing balls of mud, carving a big sphere, cleaning with a giant unwieldy mop, playing with indigo, wrangling cardboard, setting sunflowers ablaze, playing a tune with a soda bottle, taking a walk with other people’s laundry, kindling smoke signals, weaving a bed, cracking seeds all night, listening to sleep, dressing a plant, these are some of the activities that have been incorporated into my work over the last two years. Most ideas begin in the studio and then are realized outside. Many of the tasks mentioned allow me to easily integrate into a crowd, where the project …
