Inclusive Leadership And Employee Involvement In Creative Tasks In The Workplace: The Mediating Role Of Psychological Safety, Abraham Carmeli, Roni Reiter-Palmon, Enbal Ziv

Psychology Faculty Publications

This study examines how inclusive leadership (manifested by openness, accessibility, and availability of a leader) fosters employee creativity in the workplace. Using a sample of 150 employees, we investigated the relationship between inclusive leadership (measured at Time 1), psychological safety, and employee involvement in creative work tasks (measured at Time 2). The results of structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis indicate that inclusive leadership is positively related to psychological safety, which, in turn, engenders employee involvement in creative work.

Learning New Words Affects Nonword Pronunciation In Children, Maya Khanna, Michael J. Cortese, Katharine Birchwood

Psychology Faculty Publications

In two experiments we examined how children’s nonword pronunciations are influenced by learning words. In Experiment 1, children pronounced nonwords before and after learning words sharing orthographic rimes with the nonwords. These rimes varied in spelling-to-sound consistency and regularity. Children’s nonword pronunciations were more sensitive to consistency and regularity after instruction than before. Experiment 2 expanded upon Experiment 1 by modifying the instruction to highlight regularity and consistency in rime unit neighborhoods and by including both younger (M age = 7.6) and older (M age = 9.92) participants. After instruction, Experiment 2 participants demonstrated greater sensitivity to rime unit consistency …

The sample included assessment records for 135 students who graduated from high school with special education services under the category of specific learning disability. The assessment procedures were recorded and compared to trends in practice at the time. Results revealed that the use of traditional assessment practices, such as the IQ-achievement discrepancy, was less likely to be used once the alternative Flexible Service Delivery Model was initiated. To further investigate the impact of the Flexible Service Delivery Model, data were gathered …

Mindfulness And Well-Being: Testing For Mediation And Predictiveness, Tate R. Hartman Jan 2010

Mindfulness And Well-Being: Testing For Mediation And Predictiveness, Tate R. Hartman

Masters Theses

Mindfulness is defined as a state of mind where one is able to attend to and be aware of what is taking place in the immediate present in a non-judgmental manner (Brown & Ryan, 2003; Kabbat-Zinn, 1994). Although originating in Eastern spirituality and philosophy, mindfulness has migrated to Western culture within the last 30 years (Anderson, Lau, Segal, & Bishop, 2007). A number of therapies, either based in mindfulness or incorporating aspects of it, have yielded positive results on a variety of conditions, such as depression and borderline personality disorder. However, the specific avenues that mindfulness takes to elicit these …

Does Familiarity With A Rape Victim Influence Rape Myth Acceptance?, Christopher Bottger

Masters Theses

The topic of rape myth acceptance has been extensively studied; however, research investigating how rape myth acceptance may be related to a person's familiarity with a rape victim is minimal. To assess this relationship, 160 male and female undergraduate students indicated their degree of acceptance of rape myths on one of two versions of the Illinois Rape ~yth Acceptance Scale (IRMAS). One version presented the traditional IRMAS' items that referred to a hypothetical woman. The other version developed for the present study included personalized items that referred to a friend of the participant. The present study was the first to …

The present study aimed to further previous research dealing with predictors of depression in the elderly. More specifically, this study sought to target nursing home residents, which is a group that is often overlooked in the literature. The present study aimed to look at the possible relationship between satisfaction with life events and the amount of …

Olweus Bullying Prevention: A Program Evaluation At A Local Middle School, Jessica L. Hettiger Jan 2010

Olweus Bullying Prevention: A Program Evaluation At A Local Middle School, Jessica L. Hettiger

Masters Theses

Bullying is a rising problem in America leading to low self-esteem, poor school performance, and even teenage suicides. As Americans we feel it is our duty to "fix" the problems associated with bullying in order to help each student receive the best education possible. With this attitude, programs like the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program are making a rise as researched-based interventions based on the whole-school concept.

Originally, Olweus, found positive results in Norway and, consequently, started marketing his program to schools in America. Unfortunately, various studies by Cornell (2006) and Fink (2010), along with this study have shown significantly different …

Job Satisfaction And Locus Of Control In An Academic Setting, Bonni J. Stachowiak Jan 2010

Job Satisfaction And Locus Of Control In An Academic Setting, Bonni J. Stachowiak

Theses and Dissertations

This study explored any relationships that existed between faculty members' locus of control and job satisfaction at a small, private, faith-based university. Two demographic variables were also analyzed in the findings: number of years teaching in higher education and tenure status. The job satisfaction instrument used was the Job in General (JIG) scale (Ironson et al.), which measures global satisfaction. Perceived locus of control was measured by Duttweiler's (1984) Internal Control Index (ICI). A total of 61 faculty members' participated in this survey. Overall, the findings in this study were somewhat consistent with past research, to the extent that this …

Understanding The End User Perspective: A Multiple-Case Study Of Successful Health Information Technology Implementation, Bardia Behravesh

Theses and Dissertations

The United States continues to lag behind other countries in its adoption of health information technology. A failure to increase adoption will jeopardize the nation's ability to reduce medical errors, address the rapid growth of healthcare costs, and enact effective healthcare reform. Health information technology (HIT) implementation success factors as perceived by healthcare executives and industry experts are well documented in the literature. Few studies, however, have focused on the perceptions of HIT end users such as physicians and nurses. The purpose of this exploratory case study was to describe the strategies, actions, and other factors that contribute to the …

Exploring Generative Change, Terry Vanquickenborne Jan 2010

Exploring Generative Change, Terry Vanquickenborne

Theses and Dissertations

Examination of human civilization reveals that cultures have continually evolved through social and economic forms (Drucker, 2000). Several authors have argued that society is again reaching a turning point where the current mindsets and approaches no longer meet the challenges being faced (Senge, 1990; Veltrop, 2006; Wheatley, 1999). Senge's perspective is that what is required now is a shift from mechanistic viewpoints to wholistic systems approaches. The new paradigm is reflected in the notion of generative change, which refers to change that builds upon itself; calls forth imagination, creativity, and courage; and originates in the interdependence and interconnectedness of people. …

An Examination Of The Correlation Between Ninth Grade Mathematics Grades And Student Performance On The Mathematics Portion Of The California High School Exit Examination, Andrea Lynn Steffan

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the relationship between ninth graders’ math course grades (passing or failing) and future performance on the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE). Although correlative data is not predictive, it is able to give a sense of which students one can expect to be successful and which students are more likely to benefit from interventions before taking the CAHSEE. This information can be used to ensure that those students needing intervention receive appropriate interventions before sitting for the CAHSEE exam for the first time in March of their 10th grade year. This study also examines to what extent …

Extending The Benefits Of Alcohol And Drug Treatment: An Exploration Of Volunteer Utilization And Delivery Of Recovery Services, Leonard L. Bade

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explored what treatment providers can learn from community-based organizations about volunteerism as a way to support long-term alcohol and drug recovery. In particular, this thesis used 11 structured interviews with staff at community-based organizations and treatment centers to determine the level of resource allocation of volunteers, the utilization of volunteers in program and service delivery, and the motivation of volunteers to get and stay involved in recovery activities. Gaining a better understanding of volunteerism as a strategy for extending care beyond a treatment setting had benefits for both treatment center alumni and volunteers. Findings supported previous anecdotal and …

Slipping Away From Justice: The Effect Of Attorney Skill On Trial Outcomes, Jennifer B. Shinall Jan 2010

Slipping Away From Justice: The Effect Of Attorney Skill On Trial Outcomes, Jennifer B. Shinall

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Just how important is a good attorney? Can a skillful attorney actually change the verdict? More importantly, in criminal trials, can a good defense attorney let guilty people go free, or can a good prosecutor send innocent people to jail? Every day, as more highprofile defendants find themselves in court, the anecdotal evidence of this attorney skill effect continues to mount. Yet no one has decisively answered these questions-not only for high-profile defendants, but for the everyday defendant as well. This Note will argue that a skillful defense attorney is not as powerful as popular opinion would lead us to …

Clinical Legal Education At A Generational Crossroads: Shades Of Gray, Karla M. Mckanders Jan 2010

Clinical Legal Education At A Generational Crossroads: Shades Of Gray, Karla M. Mckanders

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Clinical legal education is at a crossroads. With studies like the Macrate Report, Carnegie Foundation Report “Educating Lawyers,” and Best Practices for Legal Education there is greater focus on experiential learning. Consequently, clinics are at an inflection point regarding their future. Three distinct generations will determine the path forward: Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials. Each generation brings a different set of preferences, biases, perspectives and strengths to the table. Given the changes in legal academia, what will the future hold for clinical legal education?

The following are four essays by clinicians from the three generations. They each relay their …

Realism, Punishment, And Reform, Owen D. Jones, Paul H. Robinson, Robert Kurzban Jan 2010

Realism, Punishment, And Reform, Owen D. Jones, Paul H. Robinson, Robert Kurzban

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Professors Donald Braman, Dan Kahan, and David Hoffman, in their article "Some Realism About Punishment Naturalism," to be published in an upcoming issue of the University of Chicago Law Review, critique a series of our articles: Concordance and Conflict in Intuitions of Justice (http://ssrn.com/abstract=932067), The Origins of Shared Intuitions of Justice (http://ssrn.com/abstract=952726), and Intuitions of Justice: Implications for Criminal Law and Justice Policy (http://ssrn.com/abstract=976026). Our reply, here, follows their article in that coming issue.

As we demonstrate, they have misunderstood our views on, and thus the implications of, widespread agreement about punishing the "core" of wrongdoing. Although much of their …

Energy And Climate Change: Key Lessons For Implementing The Behavioral Wedge, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Paul C. Stern, Gerald T. Gardner, Thomas Dietz, Jonathan M. Gilligan Jan 2010

Energy And Climate Change: Key Lessons For Implementing The Behavioral Wedge, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Paul C. Stern, Gerald T. Gardner, Thomas Dietz, Jonathan M. Gilligan

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The individual and household sector accounts for roughly 40 percent of United States energy use and carbon dioxide emissions, yet the laws and policies directed at reductions from this sector often reflect a remarkably simplistic model of behavior. This Essay addresses one of the obstacles to achieving a “behavioral wedge” of individual and household emissions reductions: the lack of an accessible, brief summary for policymakers of the key findings of behavioral and social science studies on household energy behavior. The Essay does not provide a comprehensive overview of the field, but it discusses many of the leading studies that demonstrate …

Spirituality And Ageing : A Qualitative Study Of Religiosity Of Chinese Older Persons In Hong Kong, Yuk Ha Wong Jan 2010

Spirituality And Ageing : A Qualitative Study Of Religiosity Of Chinese Older Persons In Hong Kong, Yuk Ha Wong

Lingnan Theses

The life expectancy of Chinese people in Hong Kong is increasing and is amongst the longest in the world. However, many people, especially older persons may experience chronic ill-health and, less detectable, many may also be experiencing alienation, loneliness, meaninglessness and fear of death. Spirituality and spiritual care, which focus on the healing of the soul and quest for meaning, are important to many people as they age and face the prospect of death, and therefore they may have existential anxieties. A holistic healthcare approach, which views humans as bio-psycho-social-spiritual beings, stresses the importance of spirituality to people’s health and …

Punitive Damages By Numbers: Exxon Shipping Co. V. Baker, Joni Hersch, W. Kip Viscusi Jan 2010

Punitive Damages By Numbers: Exxon Shipping Co. V. Baker, Joni Hersch, W. Kip Viscusi

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The U.S. Supreme Court decision in Exxon Shipping Co. v. Baker is a landmark that establishes an upper bound ratio of punitive damages to compensatory damages of 1:1 for maritime cases, with potential implications for other types of cases as well. This article critiques the Court’s reliance on the median ratio of punitive to compensatory damages in samples of verdicts to set an upper bound for punitive damages awards. Our critique of the approach draws on the properties of statistical distributions and a new analysis of cases with punitive damages awards. The Court’s conclusion that a 1:1 ratio establishes a …
