Beyond The Youth Gap In Understanding Political Violence, Colette Daiute Jan 2010

Beyond The Youth Gap In Understanding Political Violence, Colette Daiute

Publications and Research

"Youth are never taken seriously, and we sometimes have ideas that would be good for all people." ~ Alex, Croatia

"... Some things do depend on us; war, consequences of the war, poverty; the influence of the church interfering with the state affairs, which must not be so. " ~ Ljubicia, Serbia

As we hear in these comments by two teenagers who have grown up in the shadow of political violence, their generation is aware of the past and its legacies. These brief quotes mention many details that young people in easier situations may not notice: "consequences of the war," …

Social Perceptions Of Adolescents Based On Height And Facial Maturity, Elise Marie Pforr Jan 2010

Social Perceptions Of Adolescents Based On Height And Facial Maturity, Elise Marie Pforr

Human Development and Family Science

This study explored the influence of adolescent height and facial maturity on adult social perceptions of their competence. A sample of95 college students completed questionnaires rating the competence level of target adolescents based on manipulated full-body images of the targets. Findings indicate that height significantly contributed to social perceptions of adolescents; however, facial maturity did not. Furthermore, when physical characteristics were concordant, tall mature-faced adolescents were perceived as more competent than short baby-faced adolescents. When physical characteristics were discordant (tall with a baby face and short with a mature face), competence ratings were not significantly different. The limitations of this …

Effect Of Perceived Friend Intervention On Individual-Level Bullying And Intervention, Marina Serdiouk

Human Development and Family Science

The main aim of this study was to examine the relation between perceived friend intervention and individual-level bullying and intervention. The mediating role of beliefs about aggression and attitudes toward victims was also investigated. One hundred eighteen students (49 boys and 69 girls) in grades 6 to 8 completed a questionnaire that included items measuring bullying, intervention, beliefs about aggression, and attitudes toward victims. The results of the multilevel analysis revealed that children in friendship groups with low levels of perceived friend intervention were less likely to intervene, but were not more likely to bully. Attitudes toward victims and normative …

At the conclusion of the four-hour session, the program facilitators distributed the first retrospective questionnaire …

Women's Sexual Attitudes, Body Image, And Sexual Activity: A Mediation Analysis, Jessica Lynne Lerner Jan 2010

Women's Sexual Attitudes, Body Image, And Sexual Activity: A Mediation Analysis, Jessica Lynne Lerner

Human Development and Family Science

Currently, an increasing number of women report sexual difficulties, and previous research has shown that both sexual attitudes and body image have a significant impact on women's sexual activity. While previous studies measured the influence of sexual attitudes and body image separately on sexual activity, the present study instead used mediational analyses to determine the direction of effects that sexual attitudes and body image have on sexual activity. Online surveys were administered to 401 emerging adult undergraduate and graduate female students. The surveys included self-report measures of conservative versus liberal sexual attitudes, body image, and frequency of sexual activity. Results …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Undergraduate research programs have become increasingly important to the teaching and learning agenda of American institutions of higher education. A vast body of literature supports the need for hands-on teaching strategies in and outside of the classroom. In many ways, undergraduate research programs are a response to that need. Furthermore, many institutions of higher education encourage and foster the engagement of undergraduate research initiatives for a plethora of purposes; however, efforts have been met with varied effectiveness. The researcher conducted this study, at two private Liberal Arts colleges and nine research programs, to investigate current undergraduate research practices at the …

Laboratory Investigations Of Alfven Waves In A High Power Helicon Plasma With Density Gradients., Saeid Houshmandyar Jan 2010

Laboratory Investigations Of Alfven Waves In A High Power Helicon Plasma With Density Gradients., Saeid Houshmandyar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Alfven wave dissipation is the primary physical process that underlies a leading theoretical model of coronal ion heating in the Sun. Data from Hinode, the recently launched high-resolution solar imaging mission [Erdelyi and Fedun, Science, Dec. 2007], has provided strong evidence for the presence of Alfven waves in the corona and in coronal loops. These Hinode observations have the potential to explain the million-degree difference between ion temperatures in the corona and at the top of the photosphere. Laboratory investigations of Alfven wave propagation and damping typically require long plasma sources, needed to accommodate the long wavelength waves. Shorter experimental …

Considering The Curricular Impact Of Lactation Consulting/Counseling On Breastfeeding Decisions Within Two West Virginia County Wic Programs., Joni M. Johnson Gray

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Due to a glaring absence of research into the breastfeeding decisions of Appalachian women, this study investigates the potential influences of the WIC program and its counseling on the infant feeding decisions of West Virginia women. Using the lens of critical theory, the study employs a mixed methods research approach, including the distribution of a breastfeeding perception survey, extended interviews with WIC lactation consultants and an analysis of WV WIC’s proposed and practiced breastfeeding education curriculum. Results suggest that WV mothers are informed about the benefits of breastfeeding, but not necessarily from interactions with the WIC program. Rather, a latent …

Development Of Gold-Immobilized P450 Platform For Exploring The Effect Of Oligomer Formation On P450-Mediated Metabolism For In Vitro To In Vivo Drug Metabolism Predictions., Jarod L. Kabulski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The cytochrome P450 (P450) enzyme family is responsible for the biotransformation of a wide range of endogenous and xenobiotic compounds, as well as being the major metabolic enzyme in first pass drug metabolism. In vivo drug metabolism for P450 enzymes is predicted using in vitro data obtained from a reconstituted expressed P450 system, but these systems have not always been proven to accurately represent in vivo enzyme kinetics, due to interactions caused by oligomer formation. These in vitro systems use soluble P450 enzymes prone to oligomer formation and studies have shown that increased states of protein aggregation directly affect the …

Teaching Resources In Speleology And Karst: A Valuable Educational Tool, Jo De Waele

International Journal of Speleology

There is a growing need in the speleological community of tools that make teaching of speleology and karst much easier. Despite the existence of a wide range of major academic textbooks, often the caver community has a difficult access to such material. Therefore, to fill this gap, the Italian Speleological Society, under the umbrella of the Union International de Spéléologie, has prepared a set of lectures, in a presentation format, on several topics including geology, physics, chemistry, hydrogeology, mineralogy, palaeontology, biology, microbiology, history, archaeology, artificial caves, documentation, etc. These lectures constitute the “Teaching Resources in Speleology and Karst”, available online. …

Uranium-Series Dating Of Gypsum Speleothems: Methodology And Examples, Laura Sanna, Francisco Saez, Siri Simonsen, Silviu Constantin, José-Maria Calaforra, Paolo Forti, Stein-Erik Lauritzen Jan 2010

Uranium-Series Dating Of Gypsum Speleothems: Methodology And Examples, Laura Sanna, Francisco Saez, Siri Simonsen, Silviu Constantin, José-Maria Calaforra, Paolo Forti, Stein-Erik Lauritzen

International Journal of Speleology

The analytical problems of dating gypsum speleothems with the U-series technique are reviewed. Gypsum speleothems are, in general, very low in U content, challenging the limits of detection methods. Various approaches to dissolving gypsum and isolation of actinides from the matrix include ion-pairing dissolution with magnesium salts and using nitric acid. The most precise dating technique is Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (TIMS), combined with Fe(OH)3 scavenging and anionic exchange chromatography. Less satisfactory, but much quicker, is direct retention of actinides from HNO3 by means of TRU resin and MC-ICP-MS detection. We have tested these methods on gypsum speleothems …

Spatial Distribution Of Soda Straws Growth Rates Of The Coufin Cave (Vercors, France), Yves Perrette, Stéphane Jaillet Jan 2010

Spatial Distribution Of Soda Straws Growth Rates Of The Coufin Cave (Vercors, France), Yves Perrette, Stéphane Jaillet

International Journal of Speleology

The Choranche Cave system (Vercors, France) is an excellent locality for measuring the growth rates of large numbers soda straws. This is especially the case for the Coufin Cave, as enlargement of the cave entrance in 1875 led to a change in stalactite color from brown to white, thus providing a reliable chronomarker. The date of this brown-to-white calcite transition has been confirmed by lamina counting. We measured and georeferenced the growth-lengths of 306 soda straws in a 1m2 area of the roof of the Coufin Cave entrance chamber. Because of the very slow and sometimes inexistent water feeding …

Age Frequency Distribution And Revised Stable Isotope Curves For New Zealand Speleothems: Palaeoclimatic Implications, Paul W. Williams, Helen L. Neil, Jian-Xin Zhao Jan 2010

Age Frequency Distribution And Revised Stable Isotope Curves For New Zealand Speleothems: Palaeoclimatic Implications, Paul W. Williams, Helen L. Neil, Jian-Xin Zhao

International Journal of Speleology

The occurrence of speleothems in New Zealand with reversed magnetism indicates that secondary calcite deposition in caves has occurred for more than 780 thousand years (ka). 394 uranium-series dates on 148 speleothems show that such deposition has taken place somewhere in the country with little interruption for more than 500 ka. A relative probability distribution of speleothem ages indicates that most growth occurred in mild, moist interglacial and interstadial intervals, a conclusion reinforced by comparing peaks and troughs in the distribution with time series curves of speleothem δ18O and δ13C values. The stable isotope time series …

Do Karst Rivers “Deserve” Their Own Biotic Index? A Ten Years Study On Macrozoobenthos In Croatia, Biljana Rađa, Sanja Puljas

International Journal of Speleology

In this study we present the results of a ten year survey of the aquatic macroinvertebrate fauna along four karst rivers: Jadro, Žrnovnica, Grab and Ruda, all of them situated in the Middle Dalmatia region of Croatia, in an attempt to construct the Iliric Biotic Index, which will be more applicable for the water quality analysis than the most frequently applied biotic index in Croatia, the Italian Modification of Extended Biotic Index. The rivers geologically belong to the Dinaric karst, unique geological phenomena in Europe. Benthic macroinvertebrates were collected along each river at 15 sites by standard methods of sampling …
