On The Road Again Consumptives Traveling For Health In The American West, 1840-1925, Jeanne Abrams Oct 2010

On The Road Again Consumptives Traveling For Health In The American West, 1840-1925, Jeanne Abrams

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

From the mid-nineteenth century through the first decades of the twentieth century, hundreds of thousands of health seekers, on the advice of their physicians, family members, or popular advertisements, took to the road to "chase the cure" for tuberculosis, the most dreaded disease of the era. Indeed, tuberculosis, also commonly known as consumption or "the White Plague," held the dubious distinction of being the leading cause of death in nineteenth century America. In the first years of the twentieth century 150,000 Americans died of it yearly, and more than ten times that number were afflicted with the disease.1 Whether …

How Do In-Store Environmental Cues Influence Malaysian Shoppers? A Study Of Hypermarket Customers In Malaysia, Y.G. Wee, K.Z. Ahmad Oct 2010

How Do In-Store Environmental Cues Influence Malaysian Shoppers? A Study Of Hypermarket Customers In Malaysia, Y.G. Wee, K.Z. Ahmad

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

The importance of retail store design and merchandising policies rests in the ability of the physical retail environment to alter shopping reactions and behaviour. Specifically, this research paper examines relationship between physical hypermarket environments, Malaysian shoppers’ emotions and their subsequent shopping behaviour besides considering the role of self regulation as moderator of relationships between consumers’ shopping emotions and their post shopping evaluations. Overall, the findings of this study refute the general postulation that shopping emotions directly influence resource expenditure and shopping values. Results also contradict with previous research which indicates that action oriented shoppers are less responsive to environmental stimuli …

Development As Power, Alison Brysk Oct 2010

Development As Power, Alison Brysk

Human Rights & Human Welfare

While material progress towards the Millennium Development Goals is laudable, and pledges of new resources are necessary, we can never fully address poverty without talking about power. As Amartya Sen pointed out, true development depends on freedom.

Encouraging Savings Under The Earned Income Tax Credit: A Nudge In The Right Direction, Vada Waters Lindsey Oct 2010

Encouraging Savings Under The Earned Income Tax Credit: A Nudge In The Right Direction, Vada Waters Lindsey

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

During 2007, 3.6 million or 9.7% of people in the United States age 65 or older were below the poverty level. In light of the number of elderly people living below the poverty level, it is important that everyone, including low-income workers, have the opportunity to save for retirement. Low-income workers face many challenges to saving for retirement. The barriers to saving include the lack of access to retirement plans and lack of investment savvy. For example, only 42 % of workers employed in service occupations in the private industry have access to employer retirement plans. The percentage drops to …

Total Protein Determination Using Micro Plate Assay, Julie Ruffatti Oct 2010

Total Protein Determination Using Micro Plate Assay, Julie Ruffatti

All Capstone Projects

One of the largest challenges that food manufactures are facing today is the management of food allergens. Allergenic protein in trace amounts, part per million concentrations, will trigger a reaction in some individuals. Food manufacturers need to prevent allergen cross-contamination by performing adequate sanitation after production of an allergenic containing food. Allergen detection kits are used to determine if sufficient protein was removed from the equipment surfaces during sanitation. One kit on the market is the 3M™ Clean- Trace™ Surface Protein (Allergen) swab tests. The test qualitatively detects the presence of protein based on the biuret reaction and will yield …

The search for longevity-determining genes in human has largely neglected the operation of genetic interactions. We have identified a novel combination of common variants of three genes that has a marked association with human lifespan and healthy aging. Subjects were recruited and stratified according to their genetically inferred ethnic affiliation to account for population structure. Haplotype analysis was performed in three candidate genes, and the haplotype combinations were tested for association with exceptional longevity. An HRAS1 haplotype enhanced the effect of an APOE haplotype on exceptional survival, and a LASS1 haplotype further augmented its magnitude. These results were replicated in …

A Definite Claim On Claim Indefiniteness: An Empirical Study Of Definiteness Cases Of The Past Decade With A Focus On The Federal Circuit And The Insolubly Ambiguous Standard, Christa J. Laser

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

This empirical study of patent claim definiteness cases of the past decade makes several novel findings including: (1) slightly more than half of final Federal Circuit definiteness cases hold the asserted claims not indefinite; (2) the percentage of non-Federal Circuit definiteness cases holding claims not indefinite increased approximately 60 percentage points over the ten-year period focused on in this analysis;(3) the Federal Circuit more often held chemical claims not indefinite, but electrical claims indefinite; and (4) the Federal Circuit more often held claims with term clarity issues not indefinite, but claims with means-plus-function issues indefinite. These differences partially result from …

Surface Hydration: Principles And Applications Toward Low-Fouling/Nonfouling Biomaterials, Lingyan Liu, Jie Zheng Oct 2010

Surface Hydration: Principles And Applications Toward Low-Fouling/Nonfouling Biomaterials, Lingyan Liu, Jie Zheng

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering Faculty Research

Surface resistance to nonspecific protein adsorption, cell/bacterial adhesion, and biofilm formation is critical for the development and performance of biomedical and analytical devices. Significant needs and efforts have been made in the development of biocompatible and bioactive materials for antifouling surfaces, but much of the work retains an empirical flavor due to the complexity of experiments and the lack of robust theoretical models. In this review, two major classes of nonfouling materials (i.e. hydrophilic and zwitterionic materials) and associated basic nonfouling mechanisms and practical examples are discussed. Highly hydrated chemical groups with optimized physical properties of the surface, along with …

Distribution Of Isoflavones And Antioxidant Activities Of Soybean Cotyledon, Coat And Germ, Xiaohua Yue, Ahmed Moursy Abdallah, Zhimin Xu Oct 2010

Distribution Of Isoflavones And Antioxidant Activities Of Soybean Cotyledon, Coat And Germ, Xiaohua Yue, Ahmed Moursy Abdallah, Zhimin Xu

Faculty Publications

Soy isoflavones in the cotyledon, coat and germ of four soybean varieties from the southern U.S.A. were determined and compared. Isoflavones with aglycone, daidzein, genistein, glycitein and aglycone, withβ-glucoside, genistin, daidzin and glycitin, were found in the four varieties. The range of total soy isoflavones in cotyledon, coat and germ extracts from the varieties was 2.73-9.71, 5.56-16.94 and 27.76-81.43 mg/g, respectively. Soy germ was the richest source of isoflavones among the three soybean parts. Distribution of the isoflavones in soy cotyledon was different from that in soy coat or germ. Daidzin and glycitin were the major isoflavones in the germ …

Civil Judicial Subsidy, The, Brendan Maher Oct 2010

Civil Judicial Subsidy, The, Brendan Maher

Faculty Articles and Papers

American society does not require civil litigants to bear the actual cost of using the court; those costs are borne almost entirely by the taxpayer (i.e., the “civil judicial subsidy”). In this Article I ask: is that right? Or is there a more desirable way to apportion court usage costs between the state and litigants? I develop an evaluative framework that facilitates analysis of the purpose, contours, and cost of the current judicial subsidy. We subsidize court use because, in theory, there are certain “social positives” associated with public adjudication. To date the unspoken assumption has been that these social …
