Are Household Income, Gender, And Race Important In Shaping Parental Involvement In Children’S Education?, Nicholas D. Hartlep, Antonio L. Ellis
Are Household Income, Gender, And Race Important In Shaping Parental Involvement In Children’S Education?, Nicholas D. Hartlep, Antonio L. Ellis
NERA Conference Proceedings 2010
The authors used data from the National Household Education Surveys (NHES) Program 2007 Parent and Family Involvement in Education Survey (National Center for Education Statistics, 2007) (N=10,681) to examine household income, gender, and race of parents, and their importance in shaping parental involvement in children’s education. The study finds that when accounting for tutoring that: (1) Pacific Islander mothers have the highest odds of being involved in their child's homework; (2) Black fathers have the highest odds of being involved in their child's homework; and (3) Low household incomes (compared to high household incomes) have the highest odds of being …

Leisure In The Life Of The 21st Century Black Church: Re-Thinking The Gift, Steven N. Waller Ph.D.
Leisure In The Life Of The 21st Century Black Church: Re-Thinking The Gift, Steven N. Waller Ph.D.
Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies
Scholarship devoted to examining the role that leisure plays in the life of the Black Church is lacking. Leisure is an important facet of congregational life in African American churches and permeates congregational dynamics on multiple levels. The purpose of this essay is to examine leisure in the life of the Black Church and posit how a healthy, theologically accurate understanding of the value of leisure can help with health and wellness promotion, community-economic development and church growth. The Black Church is defined as the eight historically Black denominations: African Methodist Episcopal, African Methodist Episcopal Zion, Christian Methodist Episcopal, Church …

Background
Enhancing the upward translocation of heavy metals such as Zn from root to shoot through genetic engineering has potential for biofortification and phytoremediation. This study examined the contribution of the heavy metal-transporting ATPase, AtHMA4, to the shoot ionomic profile of soil-grown plants, and investigated the importance of the C-terminal domain in the functioning of this transporter.
Principal Findings
The Arabidopsis hma2 hma4 mutant has a stunted phenotype and a distinctive ionomic profile, with low shoot levels of Zn, Cd, Co, K and Rb, and high shoot Cu. Expression of AtHMA4(AtHMA4-FL) under the CaMV-35S promoter partially rescued …

Can Grain Be Disinfested In 5-Gal Hdpe Buckets Containing Oxygen Absorber Packets?, Lynn V. Ogden, C. Griffin
Faculty Publications
Effective methods of grain disinfestation include freezing, the use of carbon dioxide gas, and the use of pesticides. Oxygen deprivation has also been shown to be an effective method of disinfestation when the oxygen content is held below 1% for at least 12 days (d). High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) 5 gallon (gal) buckets have become a popular and convenient storage container for dry foods such as wheat, rice and beans. Oxygen absorber packets are an effective way to remove the oxygen in high-barrier sealed containers to prolong the life of many of these foods. It is hypothesized that sealed HDPE …

Feasibility Of Re-Using Pete Soda Bottles To Exclude Oxygen During Storage Of Low Moisture Foods, Sarah Broderick, Michelle A. Lloyd, Lynn V. Ogden, Oscar A. Pike
Faculty Publications
Many consumers are beginning to store grain on their own creating a need for easy disinfestation methods that can be accomplished in the home. Oxygen deprivation has proven to be an effective method for grain disinfestation when kept below 1% for 12 days. Re-using PETE soda bottles is an easy way many consumers can store their grains. The purpose of this study was to determine if using oxygen absorber packets in used PETE soda bottles will keep the oxygen percent low enough to disinfest the grain stored in them. Experiments were carried out to determine how long oxygen absorber packets …

Evaluation Of School Wellness Policies In North San Luis Obispo County (Final Report), Ann Yelmokas Mcdermott, David W. Hey, Laurie Pugh, Rosanna Taylor, Arlene Grant-Holcomb, Stephanie F. Teaford
Kinesiology and Public Health
A two year grant (October 2008-2010) was awarded to the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department (SLO-PHD) so that outside agencies could engage in school wellness policy (SWP) advocacy and community activities to aid in combating the growing epidemic of obesity among the county‘s high risk populations. Under SLO-PHD oversight, Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL-SLO) proposed school district outcomes, objectives, and indicators. (Attachment A provides the SWP rationale while Attachment B contains the HEAL-SLO/TCE purpose and goals.) In March 2009, a research team from newly formed STRIDE at California Polytechnic State University was contracted to review and evaluate Lillian …

Evaluation Of Soybean Meal As A Protein Source And Its Effect On Growth And Nitrogen Utilization Of Black Sea Turbot (Psetta Maeotica) Juveniles, Murat Yigit, Sebahattin Ergün, Ali Türker, Burcu Harmantepe, Adnan Erteken
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Three experimental diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous (550 g kg-1 protein) and iso-caloric (20.5 kJ gross energy g-1 diet) by substituting fish meal (FM) for defatted soybean meal (SBM) at levels of 0, 10 and 20% replacement in order to evaluate the effects of replacing FM with defatted SBM in diets for Black Sea turbot. Diets were fed to triplicate groups of young Black Sea turbot (mean initial weight of 30.2 ± 0.2 g) for 60 days. Turbot fed all three diets had no significant difference (P > 0.05) in final weight, specific growth rate, nutrient utilization, Nitrogen loss or …

To predict the proper measures to be taken in harmonizing the global health with the emergence of the new influenza virus subtype capable of uncertain pandemic threat, WHO has developed guidelines regarding the preparedness and preventive measures and requires every country to follow the guidelines in formulating national pandemic and response plans plus implementing the measures effectively with regular monitoring. With the emergence of H1N1 infection worldwide, the Government of Nepal has considered the “National Avian Influenza and Influenza Pandemic Preparedness and Response Plan” (NAIIPPRP), the plan developed in 2005 to deal with the Avian Influenza. The main objective of …

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
