Are Black Bears Declining In Montana? Inference From Multiple Data Sources In The Face Of Uncertainty, Julie Ann Beston
Are Black Bears Declining In Montana? Inference From Multiple Data Sources In The Face Of Uncertainty, Julie Ann Beston
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Carnivores are managed both to maintain populations and reduce conflict with humans, but data-based decision-making is difficult due to the expense of data collection. When new fieldwork is impossible, we can benefit from available data in assessing populations. I used demographic and harvest data to assess the population status of black bears (Ursus americanus) in Montana.
I conducted a hierarchical Bayesian meta-analysis of black bear demographic studies to evaluate geographic structuring and estimate vital rates and population growth rate. Adult survival is higher in the west than the east, but the reverse is true for fecundity. The mean …
Phage Lysins - Structure, Genetics And Applications, Jennifer Garry
Phage Lysins - Structure, Genetics And Applications, Jennifer Garry
Theses
Antibiotics are of the utmost importance in the fight against pathogenic bacteria, however, in recent years there has been a continual increase in the development of antibiotic resistance among bacteria. As a result it has become essential to develop new technologies to combat these pathogens. One such technology is the application of phage lysins as antimicrobial agents against pathogenic infections. A promising phage lysin is LysK, a 495 amino-acid protein derived from Staphylococcal Phage K. LysK can lyse a wide range of staphylococcal species including MRSA. It is also capable of killing both live and dead cells increasing its potential …
Biosynthesis Of Exopolysaccharides From Lactic Acid Bacteria And Evaluation Of Their Prebiotic Potential, Colette Ann Forde
Biosynthesis Of Exopolysaccharides From Lactic Acid Bacteria And Evaluation Of Their Prebiotic Potential, Colette Ann Forde
Theses
In this study, two strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) namely Weissella kimchii F28 and W. confusa MGl were used for the production of exopolysaccharides (EPS) from sucrose. Both strains produced glucan polysaccharides. In the case of W. kimchii F28, the EPS isolation procedure was performed six times, making modifications in order to optimize the yield of EPS. The maximum yield of EPS for this strain was 16 g per litre of culture. In the case of W. confusa MGl, the EPS isolation procedure was followed five times, resulting in a maximum yield of EPS for this strain of 34.4 …
Composition-Structure-Property Relationships In Multicomponent Bioactive Glasses, Sharon Murphy
Composition-Structure-Property Relationships In Multicomponent Bioactive Glasses, Sharon Murphy
Theses
Silicate glasses function effectively as bone grafts by stimulating bone regeneration through gene activation. However these materials offer little therapeutic potential for the regeneration of healthy bone in those suffering from metabolic bone diseases such as osteoporosis. Examining the composition-structure-property relationships arising from the incorporation of therapeutic ions such as strontium (Sr) and zinc (Zn) into such glasses in order to allow for healthy bone regeneration and antibacterial efficacy, as well as sodium (Na) to allow for controlled ion release was the objective of this work. Eight calcium-strontium-sodium-zinc-silicate glass compositions were produced, based on incremental additions of Sr and Na. …

Peer-Facilitated Cognitive Dissonance Versus Healthy Weight Eating Disorders Prevention: A Randomized Comparison, Carolyn Becker, Chantale Wilson, Allison Williams, Mackenzie Kelly, Leda Mcdaniel, Joanna Elmquist
Psychology Faculty Research
Research supports the efficacy of both cognitive dissonance (CD) and healthy weight (HW) eating disorders prevention, and indicates that CD can be delivered by peer-facilitators, which facilitates dissemination. This study investigated if peer-facilitators can deliver HW when it is modified for their use and extended follow-up of peer-facilitated CD as compared to previous trials. Based on pilot data, we modified HW (MHW) to facilitate peer delivery, elaborate benefits of the healthy-ideal, and place greater emphasis on consuming nutrient dense foods. Female sorority members (N=106) were randomized to either two 2-hour sessions of CD or MHW. Participants completed assessment …

This Article culminates a project undertaken by the Walter Leitner International Human Rights Clinic (“Leitner Clinic”) at Fordham Law School to examine the effects of land resettlement on communities that were forcibly evicted or are at risk of forced eviction from their homes, and, in particular, the effects of forced evictions on the Boeung Kak Lake community in central Phnom Penh and on people living with HIV/AIDS (“PLWHA”). This Article is based on field research the Leitner Clinic conducted in Cambodia in the fall of 2008. While in Cambodia, the Leitner Clinic interviewed families from four different communities: resettlement camps …
Otc Derivatives Trading Under The Financial Reform Bill: Is It Tough Enough?, Willa E. Gibson
Otc Derivatives Trading Under The Financial Reform Bill: Is It Tough Enough?, Willa E. Gibson
Akron Law Faculty Publications
Both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate have drafted financial reform legislation prompted by the financial market failings the country experienced in 2008. Both versions provide for comprehensive regulation of the OTC derivatives products, which were used extensively by those financial institutions that lost millions of dollars from investments in mortgage securities to insure against subprime mortgage defaults. This paper discusses the efficiency of proposed Congressional legislation to regulate the Over-the-Counter (OTC) derivatives market in light of the provision in the legislation that effectively exempts customized OTC derivatives contracts from clearing requirements and exchange trading. The exemption …
Mass Privatisation And The Post-Communist Mortality Crisis: Is There Really A Relationship?, John S. Earle, Scott G. Gehlbach
Mass Privatisation And The Post-Communist Mortality Crisis: Is There Really A Relationship?, John S. Earle, Scott G. Gehlbach
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
We reexamine the recent, well-publicized claim that "rapid mass privatisation [of state-owned enterprises]...was a crucial determinant of differences in adult mortality trends in postcommunist countries" (Stuckler, King and McKee, 2009). Our analysis shows that the estimated correlation of privatization and mortality in country-level data is not robust to recomputing the mass-privatization measure, to assuming a short lag for economic policies to affect mortality, and to controlling for country-specific mortality trends. Further, in an analysis of the determinants of mortality in Russian regions, we find no evidence that privatization increased mortality during the early 1990s. Finally, we reanalyze the relationship between …

Perhaps the most important goal of law and policy is improving people’s lives. But what constitutes improvement? What is quality of life, and how can it be measured? In previous articles, we have used insights from the new field of hedonic psychology to analyze central questions in civil and criminal justice, and we now apply those insights to a broader inquiry: how can the law make life better? The leading accounts of human welfare in law, economics, and philosophy are preference-satisfaction - getting what one wants - and objective list approaches - possessing an enumerated set of capabilities. This Article …

The Use Of A Proficiency-Based Clinical Tool In The Evaluation Of Clinical Knowledge And Skills In The Athletic Training Setting, Shannon L. Baldwin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Context. Athletic training clinical education has changed significantly since the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) became the accrediting body for the profession. One of the changes is to require proficiency in both didactic knowledge and clinical performance through evaluation. Clinical education studies are evident and methods of teaching and learning are explored frequently, however little is known about the connection of athletic training students' didactic performance and clinical proficiency competencies with on the field experiences. Objective. The purpose of this study was to create a clinical proficiency evaluation tool as a means to evaluate an athletic training …

The Implications Of Dialogue Journals In The Art Classroom, Allison L. Davis
The Implications Of Dialogue Journals In The Art Classroom, Allison L. Davis
Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education
Despite the enactment of No Child Left Behind (2001), many urban school districts continue to battle the achievement gap and struggle with low literacy rates. Authentic writing instruction, a main component of literacy, is being cut in those districts that struggle most to accommodate other demands made by the nation and state. The primary purpose of this study was to determine if the use of dialogue journals in the art classroom could effectively and unobtrusively increase the amount of time students spent authentically writing. Secondarily, the journals were analyzed to see if they contained information on student interests and cultural …
Using Algae To Estimate Postmortem Submersion Interval In A Louisiana Bayou, Sophia Renke
Using Algae To Estimate Postmortem Submersion Interval In A Louisiana Bayou, Sophia Renke
LSU Master's Theses
While algae are often used in forensic science for the determination and confirmation of death by drowning, their utility for the estimation of postmortem submersion interval (PMSI) has been underutilized. Algae are present in all water systems and will grow upon decomposing matter; yet, very little published literature exists on their use in PMSI estimation. Because PMSI is difficult to predict due to the variable nature of water, the reaction of the submerged body within water, and the lack of truly sarcophagous aquatic insects, algae are a potentially invaluable tool for the forensic anthropologist. This research investigates the utility of …

Turkish Journal of Botany
Hypocotyl explants of 3 flax cultivars were cultured for adventitious shoot regeneration in 3 different ways. Two pretreatment applications were compared with the routinely applied conventional regeneration protocol of culturing explants directly on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 1 mg L^{-1} 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and 0.02 mg L^{-1} naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). In the first pretreatment application, explants kept in a sterile cabin under an air flow for 30 min were immersed in MS solution containing 1 mg L^{-1} BAP and 0.02 mg L^{-1} NAA for 15 min; then pretreated explants were cultured on MS medium without any growth regulators …

Organic Materials: Sources Of Nitrogen In The Organic Production Of Lettuce, Maja Manojlovic, Ranko Cabilovski, Martina Bavec
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
This paper presents the results of 2 experiments: an incubation experiment and a subsequent field experiment. An incubation experiment was set up in order to determine the mineralization potential of different organic materials (OMs) (well-rotted farmyard manure [FTM], guano [G], soybean seed [S], and forage pea seed [P]), the kinetics of mineral nitrogen (N) release, and the correlation between OM content and the quantity of mineralized N. The results of the incubation experiment were checked under field conditions in which different OMs were used as N sources for lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). The highest mineralization rate constant k (0.127 day^{-1}) …

Does Treating Faba Bean Seeds With Chemical Inducers Simultaneously Increase Chocolate Spot Disease Resistance And Yield Under Field Conditions?, Salah Elhendawy, Waleed Shaban, Jun-Ichi Sakagami
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The use of chemical inducers for the development of host resistance is an alternative approach to plant disease management and is assumed to be much more environmentally sound than traditional pesticides. Five chemical inducers, salicylic acid, oxalic acid, ascorbic acid, dipotassium hydrogen phosphate (KH_2PO_4), and calcium chloride (CaCl_2), all at concentrations of 10 mM, and an untreated control treatment were applied by seed soaking to compare their effectiveness in inducing resistance against chocolate spot disease (Botrytis fabae Sard.) in faba bean under greenhouse and field conditions, and to investigate whether use of these chemicals in this way is associated with …

Marine sediments and sponges may show steep variations in redox potential, providing niches for both aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. Geodia spp. and sediment specimens from the Straits of Florida were fixed using paraformaldehyde and 95% ethanol (v/v) for fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). In addition, homogenates of sponge and sediment samples were incubated anaerobically on various cysteine supplemented agars. FISH analysis showed a prominent similarity of microbiota in sediments and Geodia spp. samples. Furthermore, the presence of sulfate-reducing and annamox bacteria as well as other obligate anaerobic microorganisms in both Geodia spp. And sediment samples were also confirmed. Anaerobic cultures …
Science, Public Bioethics, And The Problem Of Integration, O. Carter Snead
Science, Public Bioethics, And The Problem Of Integration, O. Carter Snead
Journal Articles
Public bioethics — the governance of science, medicine, and biotechnology in the name of ethical goods — is an emerging area of American law. The field uniquely combines scientific knowledge, moral reasoning, and prudential judgments about democratic decision making. It has captured the attention of officials in every branch of government, as well as the American public itself. Public questions (such as those relating to the law of abortion, the federal funding of embryonic stem cell research, and the regulation of end-of-life decision making) continue to roil the public square.
This Article examines the question of how scientific methods and …

A Qualitative Study Of Bariatric Patients And Their Social And Emotional Experiences After Surgery, Denise Hall
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Previous research has indicated that the majority of individuals who undergo bariatric surgery have histories of psychological disorders. Only a paucity of research has examined the social and emotional effects of bariatric surgery on patients. Using Kelly's personal construct theory as the conceptual framework, this phenomenological study was designed to gain more insight into how this life-altering bariatric surgery transforms patients socially and emotionally. Fifteen participants who had undergone bariatric surgery in the past 10 years were interviewed for the study. The interviews were transcribed and coded. Similar themes found within the interviews were identified as the primary themes of …
