Pollution And Public Health In A Shrinking World: Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations As A Paradigm For Emergent Needs In Environmental And Public Health Policy, Leland Stillman Jan 2010

Pollution And Public Health In A Shrinking World: Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations As A Paradigm For Emergent Needs In Environmental And Public Health Policy, Leland Stillman

Self-Designed Majors Honors Papers

Environmental factors play a major part in human health. Environmental pollutants are often as poisonous to humans as the environment. Presently, much time and energy is dedicated to keeping pollution apart from human society, with varying success. But as global population densities rise, current levels of pollution will become inviable due to public health concerns. An emergent example of this is in the concentration of livestock operations. Recent changes in the structure of U.S. hog farming have resulted in an industry-wide shift from small or medium production farms to high capacity, “concentrated animal feeding operations” (CAFO). These operations have become …

Tourist Behavior And Decibel Levels Correlate With Threat Frequency In Tibetan Macaques (Macaca Thibetana) At Mt. Huangshan, China, Lucy A. Ruesto, Lori K. Sheeran, Megan D. Matheson, Jin-Hua Li, R. Steven Wagner Jan 2010

Tourist Behavior And Decibel Levels Correlate With Threat Frequency In Tibetan Macaques (Macaca Thibetana) At Mt. Huangshan, China, Lucy A. Ruesto, Lori K. Sheeran, Megan D. Matheson, Jin-Hua Li, R. Steven Wagner

Biology Faculty Scholarship

Tourism is a common component of management practices directed toward endangered species and habitats, but few studies have explored the potential stressors that may occur to nonhumans as objects of tourism. We examined the impact that tourists have on provisioned, habituated Tibetan macaques (Macaca thibetana). Data were collected during August 2005 at the Valley of the Wild Monkeys (VWM), Mt. Huangshan, China. From a tourist viewing platform, we measured tourist densities, behaviors (for example, foot, hand, and mouth noises; mimicking monkeys; throwing objects or food), and decibel levels. Frequencies of monkey threats in the provisioning area of their …

Reclaiming The Right To Food As A Normative Response To The Global Food Crisis, Smita Narula Jan 2010

Reclaiming The Right To Food As A Normative Response To The Global Food Crisis, Smita Narula

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

In 2009, the number of hungry in the world crossed the one billion mark, a dubious milestone that has been attributed in large part to consecutive food and economic crises. Over ninety-eight percent of these individuals live in the developing world. Ironically, a great majority are involved in food production as small-scale independent food producers or agricultural laborers. These facts and figures signal a definitive blow to efforts to reduce global hunger and lift the world's poorest from abject and dehumanizing poverty. They also bring to light the deep imbalance of power in a fundamentally flawed food system. Responses to …

Optimization Of Parameters And Study Of Kinetics In Lactulose Production By Lactose Isomerization Using Strong Basic Anion Exchange Resin, Arvind Nanduri Jan 2010

Optimization Of Parameters And Study Of Kinetics In Lactulose Production By Lactose Isomerization Using Strong Basic Anion Exchange Resin, Arvind Nanduri

Masters Theses

"In this work, an experimental design was employed to investigate the effects of different operating conditions on the isomerization of lactose to lactulose by using strong basic anion exchange resin (AMBERLITE-IRA 402). Temperature, resin/lactose mass ratio and pH were considered to be the three factors affecting the conversion of lactose. Box-Behnken design was then used to optimize the operating conditions for maximum response and also to study the various interaction and main effects of the factors. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) of the experimental data showed a high correlation coefficient R² (0.99) and a low root mean square error (2.84) …

The New Homelessness Revisited, Barrett A. Lee, Kimberly A. Tyler, James D. Wright Jan 2010

The New Homelessness Revisited, Barrett A. Lee, Kimberly A. Tyler, James D. Wright

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The new homelessness has drawn sustained attention from scholars over the past three decades. Definitional inconsistencies and data limitations rendered early work during this period largely speculative in nature. Thanks to conceptual, theoretical, and methodological progress, however, the research literature now provides a fuller understanding of homelessness. Contributions by sociologists and other social scientists since the mid-1990s differentiate among types of homelessness, provide credible demographic estimates, and show how being homeless affects a person’s life chances and coping strategies. Agreement also exists about the main macro- and micro-level causes of homelessness. Active lines of inquiry examine public, media, and governmental …

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) is a rare disorder which is fatal if not recognized and treated early. Delivery of the feto-placental unit results in dramatic improvement in maternal liver function, suggesting a role for the placenta. However, the mechanisms by which defects in the fetus or placenta lead to maternal liver damage are not well understood and form the focus of this study. Placenta and serum were obtained at delivery from patients with AFLP, and placental mitochondria and peroxisomes were isolated. Placental mitochondrial function, oxidative stress, and fatty acid composition as well asserumantioxidants, oxidativeandnitrosative stress markers, andfatty acid analysis …

The Case For Social Rights, Virginia Mantouvalou Jan 2010

The Case For Social Rights, Virginia Mantouvalou

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This is part of the book Debating Social Rights (Oxford, Hart Publishing, 2010) where I am making the case for social rights and Professor Conor Gearty (LSE) is making the case against social rights. This paper argues that social and economic rights, defined as rights to the satisfaction of basic needs, are constitutional essentials at domestic level and claims of the highest priority at supranational level. Their inadequate legal protection in national and supranational orders is not justified. Social rights have common foundations with civil and political rights, but have been neglected in law because of Cold War ideologies. The …

Implementing Public Health Regulations In Developing Countries: Lessons From The Oecd Countries, Lawrence O. Gostin, Emily A. Mok, Monica Das Gupta, Max Levin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The enforcement of public health standards is a common problem in many developing countries. Public health agencies lack sufficient resources and, too often, enforcement mechanisms rely on slow and erratic judicial systems. These limitations can make traditional public health regulations difficult to implement. In this article, we examine innovative approaches to the implementation of public health regulations that have emerged in recent years within OECD countries. These approaches aim to improve compliance with health standards, while reducing dependence on both the legal system and the administrative resources of public health agencies.

This article begins by discussing some traditional forms of …

The United States' Engagement In Global Tobacco Control: Proposals For Comprehensive Funding And Strategies, Thomas J. Bollyky, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 2010

The United States' Engagement In Global Tobacco Control: Proposals For Comprehensive Funding And Strategies, Thomas J. Bollyky, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Tobacco use kills more people annually than HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined. Unless action is taken, tobacco-related diseases will kill hundreds of millions more in coming decades, mostly in low- and middle-income countries. Beyond its effects on morbidity and mortality, tobacco use has dramatic social and economic consequences, consuming healthcare budgets, robbing families of their primary wage earners, and hindering economic development. Tobacco consumption is shifting from industrialized to developing countries, spurred by rising incomes, trade liberalization, and intensive marketing.

Although Congress empowered the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to regulate tobacco domestically, the United States has failed to lead …

Bioluminescence In The Sea, Steven H.D. Haddock, Mark A. Moline, James F. Case Jan 2010

Bioluminescence In The Sea, Steven H.D. Haddock, Mark A. Moline, James F. Case

Biological Sciences

Bioluminescence spans all oceanic dimensions and has evolved many times—from bacteria to fish—to powerfully influence behavioral and ecosystem dynamics. New methods and technology have brought great advances in understanding of the molecular basis of bioluminescence, its physiological control, and its significance in marine communities. Novel tools derived from understanding the chemistry of natural light-producing molecules have led to countless valuable applications, culminating recently in a related Nobel Prize. Marine organisms utilize bioluminescence for vital functions ranging from defense to reproduction. To understand these interactions and the distributions of luminous organisms, new instruments and platforms allow observations on individual to oceanographic …

Phosphorus For High Rainfall Pastures, Mike Bolland, Bill Russell, David Weaver Jan 2010

Phosphorus For High Rainfall Pastures, Mike Bolland, Bill Russell, David Weaver

Bulletins 4000 -

Soil testing for phosphorus provides a reliable indication of when the level of phosphorus in a soil is likely to be adequate for pasture production in the next growing season. It is a waste of money to apply phosphorus fertiliser when soil testing indicates none is required, or to acidified soils, or to undergrazed pastures, or to pastures dominated by poorly productive species.

Legumes have higher phosphorus requirement than grasses.

Critical soil test phosphorus values do not change when nitrogen fertiliser is applied.

Listeria Survival After Isoelectric Solubilization And Precipitation Of Fish Protein With Organic Acids, Rachel Otto Jan 2010

Listeria Survival After Isoelectric Solubilization And Precipitation Of Fish Protein With Organic Acids, Rachel Otto

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

With mechanical fish processing, a substantial amount of protein is discarded as byproducts. Isoelectric solubilization and precipitation (ISP) is a process that recovers previously discarded protein using extreme pH shifts to solubilize and precipitate protein from byproducts. Typically, strong acids are used for pH reduction but have limited impact on bacterial load; therefore, organic acids were used during ISP processing to test the impact on Listeria ssp. concentrations. The goals of these studies were to determine the effectiveness of organic acids, specifically acetic and citric acids, to reduce L. innocua during the protein recovery process of ISP and to determine …

Considering The Curricular Impact Of Lactation Consulting/Counseling On Breastfeeding Decisions Within Two West Virginia County Wic Programs., Joni M. Johnson Gray Jan 2010

Considering The Curricular Impact Of Lactation Consulting/Counseling On Breastfeeding Decisions Within Two West Virginia County Wic Programs., Joni M. Johnson Gray

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Due to a glaring absence of research into the breastfeeding decisions of Appalachian women, this study investigates the potential influences of the WIC program and its counseling on the infant feeding decisions of West Virginia women. Using the lens of critical theory, the study employs a mixed methods research approach, including the distribution of a breastfeeding perception survey, extended interviews with WIC lactation consultants and an analysis of WV WIC’s proposed and practiced breastfeeding education curriculum. Results suggest that WV mothers are informed about the benefits of breastfeeding, but not necessarily from interactions with the WIC program. Rather, a latent …

Maximizing Broiler Performance And Health Through Feed., Kelley Grace Stacey Lilly Jan 2010

Maximizing Broiler Performance And Health Through Feed., Kelley Grace Stacey Lilly

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Feed represents approximately 70% of the costs required to produce broiler chickens. A concern in commercial poultry production is pellet quality and the cost required to make pellets of high quality. However, improvements in broiler performance attributed to improved pellet quality may help to alleviate these costs. In Chapter 2, two experiments were conducted at West Virginia University: Experiment 1) pellets were manufactured by utilizing varying processing techniques in order to create five dietary treatments, unique in feed form and Experiment 2) was conducted to explain variations in feed form on broilers of varying sex categories with consistent nutrient availability …

Movements, Habitat Selection, Associations, And Survival Of Giant Canada Goose Broods In Central Tennessee, Eric M. Dunton, Daniel L. Combs

Human–Wildlife Interactions

The brood-rearing period in giant Canada geese (Branta canadensis maxima) is one of the least-studied areas of goose ecology. We monitored 32 broods in Putnam County, Tennessee, from the time of hatching through fledging (i.e., when the goslings gained the ability to fly) and from fledging until broods left the brood-rearing areas during the spring and summer of 2003. We conducted a fixed-kernel, home-range analysis for each brood using the Animal Movement Extension in ArcView® 3.3 GIS (ESRI, Redlands, Calif.) software and calculated 95% and 50% utilization distributions (UD) for each brood. We classified 25 broods as sedentary …

Decent Work, Human Rights, And The Millennium Development Goals, Gillian Macnaughton, Diane F. Frey Jan 2010

Decent Work, Human Rights, And The Millennium Development Goals, Gillian Macnaughton, Diane F. Frey

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

The Millennium Development Goals ("MDGs") have provided the global framework for international development and poverty elimination policy for almost a decade. This framework includes time-bound targets and indicators to monitor progress toward the Goals. Initially, full employment and decent work for all was not part of the MDG framework. In 2007, however, the UN General Assembly approved four new MDG targets, including the achievement of "full and productive employment and decent work for all." This article discusses this new MDG target and its indicators from social justice and human rights perspectives. It argues that uniting the overlapping agendas of the …
