The 6-Minute Walk Is Associated With Frailty And Predicts Mortality In Older Adults With Heart Failure, Alison Kleppinger, Amir Ahmad, Kristen M. Annis, W. David Hager, Anne M. Kenny

UCHC Articles - Research

Heart failure is the most rapidly increasing cardiovascular disease in the US and the primary discharge diagnosis for Medicare recipients. There are approximately 5.7 million people who have the diagnosis of HF in the US.1 Heart failure constitutes the most common cause for re-hospitalization and has been identified by the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission as the highest cost to the healthcare system.2, 3 Hospitalizations of older patients can result in functional deterioration leading to dependency and disability.4, 5 Due to the unpredictable trajectory of heart failure exacerbations it is difficult to discern which patients are …

Effects Of Smoking Cessation On Body Composition In Postmenopausal Women, Alison Kleppinger, Mark D. Litt, Anne M. Kenny, Cheryl A. Oncken

UCHC Articles - Research

Abstract

Background

Smoking cessation is associated with weight gain, but the effects of smoking cessation on measures of body composition (BC) have not been adequately evaluated. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of 16 months of cigarette abstinence on areas of BC measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA).

Methods

One hundred fifty-two postmenopausal women participated in a smoking cessation study using the nicotine patch. Secondary analyses were conducted on data from 119 subjects (age 56±7 years, range 41–78 years) who had had DXA scans at baseline and 16 months later. Participants were classified either as quitters …

Effects Of Organic And Inorganic Fertilizers On Marigold Growth And Flowering, Guihong Bi, William B. Evans, James M. Spiers, Anthony L. Witcher

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the growth and flowering responses of greenhouse-grown French marigold (Tagetes patula L. ‘Janie Deep Orange’) to two non-composted broiler chicken litter-based organic fertilizers, 4-2-2 and 3-3-3, and one commonly used synthetic controlled-release fertilizer, 14-14-14. In both experiments, fertilizer 4-2-2 was applied at four rates of 1%, 2%, 4%, and 6% (by volume); 3-3-3 was applied at four rates of 1.34%, 2.67%, 5.34%, and 8.0% (by volume); and 14-14-14 was applied at rates of 0.99, 1.98, 3.96, and 5.94 kg·m−3. In general, substrate containing different rates and types of fertilizers had a pH within the …

Nutrient Requirements Of Beef Cattle, Cody Wright, Julie Walker, Ken Olson Sep 2010

Nutrient Requirements Of Beef Cattle, Cody Wright, Julie Walker, Ken Olson

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Feed cost has been estimated to account for approxi¬mately 70% of the expenses associated with a beef cattle operation. The consequences of under- or overfeeding beef cows can be substantial. Underfeeding cows can result in thin body condition, poor reproductive performance, and poor milk production. On the other hand, overfeeding can be unnecessarily expensive, increase calving difficulty, reduce milk production, and potentially have a negative impact on the environment. To effectively balance diets, it is essential to know the nutrient requirements of the animal. Demand for nutrients can vary by numerous factors. However, the requirements defined in this publication will …

Adaptation Of A Lay Health Advisor Model As A Recruitment And Retention Strategy In A Clinical Trial Of College Student Smokers, Shiloh Jordan Varvel, Nikole J. Cronk, Kari Jo Harris, Anne B. Scott

Public and Community Health Sciences Faculty Publications

This study describes and provides results from a process evaluation of a lay health advisor (LHA) model to enhance participation in a clinical trial of the effectiveness of motivational interviewing on smoking cessation in college fraternity and sorority members. The implementation of the model had two phases: (a) the selection and training of LHAs as liaisons between research staff and participants and (b) LHAs’ roles in recruitment and retention. Perceptions of the LHA model were explored using survey questionnaires. Trial participants (N = 118) and LHAs (N = 8) were generally satisfied with the model and identified LHAs as helpful …

Findings From A Study Of The Working Well With A Disability Program, Catherine Ipsen, Charles Asp, University Of Montana Rural Institute Sep 2010

Findings From A Study Of The Working Well With A Disability Program, Catherine Ipsen, Charles Asp, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Employment

People with disabilities are employed at a rate of 36.9%, compared to 79.7% for people without disabilities (Erickson & Lee, 2008). Lack of accessible transportation, social insurance disincentives, and negative attitudes by employers are cited reasons for this disparity. People with disabilities also describe secondary health conditions as a barrier to employment (Ipsen, Seekins, & Arnold, in press; Kaye, 2009). Secondary conditions are health issues that are intensified by primary disability, including conditions such as chronic pain, fatigue, pressure sores, weight problems, and depression. Because access to health promotion programs typically occurs at the worksite, it’s troublesome that secondary conditions …

Making Ecodistricts Concepts And Methods For Advancing Sustainability In Neighborhoods, Ethan Seltzer, Timothy W. Smith, Joseph Cortright, Ellen M. Bassett, Vivek Shandas

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

This report is about how developing "EcoDistricts" in Portland can result in more sustainable neighborhoods and a more sustainable city. With generous funding from the Bullitt Foundation in Seattle, we have been able to take a deeper look into core concepts underlying the notion of pursuing citywide sustainability through neighborhood-scale action. The question becomes: What needs to be done to enable communities to self-manage their resource using behavior by creating community-inspired interventions that change relationships between people and between people and place? To answer these questions and to contribute to the emerging practice of EcoDistrict formation and development, what follows …

School Attendance And Retention Of Indigenous Australian Students, Nola Purdie, Sarah Buckley

Indigenous Education Research

Engagement in education is a key factor affecting the life chances of all Australians, and for Indigenous Australians in particular. Higher levels of educational attainment improve employment opportunities, are associated with higher income and promote participation in all societal activities. This paper evaluates the quality of available evidence regarding strategies for improving school attendance, with emphasis on Australian research. It examines the causes and consequences of non-attendance; measures of attendance and retention; examples of existing programs and initiatives; different program approaches, such as sanctions, incentives, and cultural relevance; what constitutes good evidence; what works in attendance and retention programs; and …

The Effect Of Claw Horn Disruption Lesions And Body Condition Score At Dry-Off On Survivability, Reproductive Performance, And Milk Production In The Subsequent Lactation, V. S. Machado, L. S. Caixeta, J. A. A. Mcart, R. C. Bicalho

Farm Animal Welfare Collection

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of claw horn disruption lesions (CHDL; sole ulcers and white line disease) and body condition score (BCS) at dry-off on survivability, milk production, and reproductive performance during the subsequent lactation. An observational prospective cohort study was conducted on a large commercial dairy in Cayuga County, New York, from September 2008 until January 2009. A total of 573 cows enrolled at dry-off were scored for body condition and hoof trimmed; digits were visually inspected for the presence of CHDL. The BCS data were recategorized into a 3-level variable BCS group (BCSG), …
